Final drive oil gets black quick!
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:31:18 pm »
I changed it at 1500 miles and it was like tar, then i changed it again after 100 miles because I'm OCD and it was just as black as the initial change! Is this normal? Thanks y'all

So I guess what I'm asking is if anyone has had theirs black so soon, if I recall I could go like 1000 miles on my ST1300 and it would look like new out of the bottle. Just a bit concerned is all.  :truce:

It's always black when I change it, but then again I don't change it until it's gone between 40,000 and 50,000.  Never tried it after just 100 miles before.  Of course mine's a C10; I'm glad I looked to see which forum this was... sigh

Peculiar thing is I flushed it twice after the initial change just to be sure I got all the black stuff out of there before I filled it back up. I don't imagine the are too many more out there as OCD as myself that will be able to speak from similar experience but then again I'm the guy that changes his oil with Amsoil every 1000 miles.  :-X

Well as you can tell by my user name your not alone, when it comes to being anal
Changed my rear end oil at 200 miles then at 1000 miles both times it was really dark.
Last change at 4000 miles it had started to look better. I think there is some type of break in compound that the factory used to help the gears mesh / break in.  And for as little oil as it takes I change mine at every service.

I believe there is a lot of moly lube used in the assembly of this part, thus the black color when you flush.  Plus, many of these colored oils, royal purple for example, lose the color almost immediately when used.

Just changed mine for the fourth time at 12k miles and it looked pretty good - not much discoloration.  First few were black as well.

when the bike was new, i changed the rear oil a couple times before the recommended interval.  iirc, it was very gray and full of metal flakes then.  for the past 60k miles ive changed it with every oil change (3-4k intervals) and its come out looking just as clean as when it went in.

in my opinion, after a couple changes, it should not get very dirty.  perhaps the vent cap is loose?
