Good idea to buy a 2017 new instead of 2018?
« on: May 08, 2018, 08:30:46 pm »
I know this subjective and I'm likely overthinking, but is there a downside to buying a brand new 2017 instead of a 2018?  I'm really wanting a new bike and found a 2017 C14 for about $11,300.

My dad always said if you buy new buy the current year due to depreciation.  Not applicable to motorcycles?

I am not aware of any changes for the 2018 model. The C14 depreciates quickly, which is good if you are buying used. But no worries, you won't want to sell it anytime soon so depreciation is irrelevant!. If it were me, I would buy the 2017 and not have a second thought about it.

As they are sold "as new" warranty doesn't start till purchase point, so, if there is a significant price break, (which appears you found one), I see no viable reason not to save money, and reinvest it in an extended warranty, which by all rights, it would be covered as long as the 18 would...

Just comes down to what color you want now..... :))

Awesome.... when you go in, poke your head in Pete's office, (the dealership owner) and tell him I said hi, and tell him I told you to toss in his first KPP EXTENSION PLAN in on the deal... and see if he bites.... he's good folk, I miss him.
He hired all new sales people, and I don't know any of them, so I can't help there, but Pete knows who I am for sure...

In the absence of other colors, no one can blame you for liking Imperial Blue.  ;) :)

Advertised pricing excludes applicable taxes, title and licensing, dealer set up, destination from factory to dealer or reconditioning and are subject to change without notice. Pricing may exclude any added parts, accessories or installation unless otherwise noted. Sale prices include all applicable offers. Some financing options can affect price in lieu of any rebates Contact dealer for details.

So have you asked about the fees they are going to hit you with?  Some dealers get carried away with those.  I like the blue BTW. :great:

I don't think you could find ANY advertised price, on the net, that didn't have those add ins...
That dealers add ins run about $1k, which would be added onto a new '18 price also.. so there is a substantail discount on that particular bike.  I know the add on prices and tax there, as I purchased my '08 from the same dealer...  it still boils down to a better price than I spent, when I was so caught up in owning one, and bought the first one in Va. there, second one in COG purchased, at $14280.00 "out the door" (my total cost spent, which included tax, registration, etc). Kaw MSRP on my bike at that time was $14,650.00 iirc.

Yes, 2 actually, the 86 is pictured in my mini photo below of "30 years of Kaw", and also my "nekid hooligan" '88 C10 COGZilla bike (not shown), along with my '08 C14, and '78 KZ1000 Ltd., also pictured

Sold the '86 and still have the rest.

So here it is, 2018, and I have a '78,--'88---&'08 kaw, never wanted a '98 for some reason,  :rotflmao: guess I didn't really need one. Now that I think about it, its funny... COGZilla has a "NIB/old stock"  '98 fueltank, and rear rim/wheel on it... so I got that covered. :great:

I did ask.  Out the door price is $12,443.00. That includes $545 destination charges, $99 dealer processing fee, @$470 sales tax, and the rest is title/tags.

This may sound like sacrilege...but are there any gently used models around?  All those extra fees are gone, along with the depreciation.

So I guess I was pretty close when I said "about $1000.00"
That ain't bad, as $1,114 currently, vs $1k back in 2008, seams pretty spot on.

As for Daboo's question

Yeah, but define "gently" used.... :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
Fees may be gone, but depreciation vacant when title was signed originally... and as we all know
"Adult ridden, never dropped, garage stored, babied and cared for" coming from a seller... well, I have a bridge for sale, and some land in Florida to sell also... :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I shopped around the NE area of the country as well and found a TON of left over 2017's for sale. I saw an advertised price of $11,799 with no add on fees in WV...

I ended up with a new leftover 2016 because I liked the metallic gray, but ultimately go with the color you want and best deal you can find...

Nothing wrong with imho. I waited a year and a half to get the red (not beer red :-) ) 2014 because I liked the color. Got a deal on it in October as the snow, err.. LEAVES were beginning to fly....

Agree about the "new bike smell".  I picked my bike up used.  Previous owner was a retired cardiologist.  Money was no object for him.  I bought he bike for $700 under KBB, and with $3000 of accessories on it.  He'd done the research and fitted it up for touring and bought only the best.  I bought the bike for about $3-3500 under what a new one would cost.  It had right around 2000 miles on it.  He had the 600 mile service done on it, and since it hadn't been ridden enough for the next service, he had an "annual" service done.  Full records.  His loss.  My gain.

I don't know the area you live in, but here are some local results using SearchTempest.com.
  • 2009 with 13,000.  Looks like new.  Red  $5500.
  • 2008 with 27,000. Silver.  $5800
  • 2008 with 14,000.  Silver  $5800
  • 2010 with 37,000 in a beautiful blue.  Lots of extras.  $6850
But if you want to buy new...go for it!  Just post pictures, or it didn't happen.  ;)

I'm hearing what you are saying.... :rotflmao:
But my math skills work, and the o/p's price otd is still lower, his price did include sales tax... the WVa didn't, and @ 6% added to CL price... its $12,506.94, now add in the fact its a WVa. sale, so GK gets a WVa. Temp tag, and title...to get back to Va.
Then ha has to get it titled in Va., and add in his plate fee, again,

Then he will still have to pay Va. every year after, a "luxury" tax, which never ends... and is a p.I.t.a.
That part is the real bummer, and in 10 years, he will have spent the original purchase price again, in rediculous taxes... but that's a given as a bike or vehical owner in Va. and a moot point,

O/p is still ahead in his home state, by $63.94.... and has a good dealer, when he needs service... not some mumbojumbo we have heard for the last 10 years, about dealers not wanting to do warranty work..on a bike not purchased from them... (Ultimate, by the way, does NOT subscribe to that mentality..they are Top Tier, and it takes a lot more than "high sales" to get the rating they have now).

GK is dealing with a dealership in his home state, about 45 minutes from home, straight shot down Rt 95,  and a dealer that has proven his track record with me, on my bike, and also a couple hundred COG /Forum members, with his low priced KPP deal...
He has a track record... that's hard to beat. :great: :great:

Its all good..

Enjoy
