How many temp bars are normal ?
« on: September 28, 2018, 10:29:54 pm »
New owner '08 Concours.

Assuming ambient temp of  65 F , how many temp bars are normal @ 60 mph and 78 mph ?

And what temp is 1 bar equal to ?  2 bars ? 3 bars ?

Thanks

I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you what the specific values are for each "bar".  My bike is usually in the middle of that gauge at just about any moving speed.  Doesn't seem to matter much as long as it's not 100+ degrees out.  When stopped or moving traffic light to traffic light, the gauge will climb a bar or two.

My 2008 would usually run just below the mid mark at 65-70 mph on the highway.  I believe that the info that you are asking abt the temp equiv of each bar is in the shop manual and was actually posted here on the forum, you may want to try a search.

 temp bars vs temperature:
- first bar (with C of F) pop at 30 deg C
- second bar at 50 C,
- third bar at 70 C,
- fourth bar at 85 C....fan on at 95 C, fan off at 92 C
- fifth bar at 100 C,
- sixth bar at 110 C

Oups, my bad.... fan off is 90 Deg C. This data has been discussed few times on this site before.

My 2014 runs everywhere between the second bar and the fourth bar depending if stopped or riding & outside temp. In traffic, always in the fourth bar. Don't recall ever saw the fifth bar lit up...

Washing my rad with a garden hose did help a lot... often run a bar lower when riding.

Thanks for the replies.

I may need a new thermostat.  My temp gauge hasn't been over 1 bar ( except when idling on the center stand ) even at 60 mph.

I was really surprised to read the Concours thermostat is a 144 degree stat.  I never heard of a MC with such a low temp thermostat.   My old Honda ST1100 ( and other Honda's I'm familiar with ) uses a 180 degree stat and I think a FJR1300 uses a 160 degree stat.

Anyone try a higher temp stat in their Concours ?  The stat doesn't determine the highest temp the engine will run at, but the lowest temp.
