Is this a good deal?
« on: June 08, 2019, 11:44:34 pm »
Hello all... I'm new here.

Been riding the past 30 yrs and just recently been wanting to get into a C14.  Started with dirt bikes.. then went through a Ninja phase and owned 3 different ZX7R's... then built a Harley Bagger and recently been riding a Suzuki B-King.

I found a 2009 C14 ABS with 77K miles.  Bar risers, HID's, exhaust.  Needs tires.  I got him down to $2800... What do you guys think?

Doesn't sound bad.  Find out if it's had any valve adjustments done and when.  If not, you can use the expense of an adjustment as a bargaining tool.  Good luck!

How often do they need to be adjusted?

The book says 15K. IT's an involved job though so many wait and I imagine some never do it. That's why it's good to ask. I did mine at 27K and don't plan to open it up again for a while.

It's a shim under bucket design, meaning that the cams have to be pulled to change the shims.  It's a sizable job.  I got a quote about a year ago from a dealer for $450.  That was taking the bike in naked to save labor costs.  If it's had good maintenance that is documented, including valve adjustments, I'd say go for it.

I'd say $2800 for an '09 w/ 77k on it is a great price, IF it had regular and documented maintenance intervals, i.e. at least 2 valve inspections during that time... they eat tires, so that's expected, but check the other stuff, like brakes, and suspension, and such, for wear and tear.. or leaks... etc.,

If he can't prove it had valve adjusts... I'd pass on it. :truce:
