KDS Communication Error
« on: June 30, 2020, 10:31:22 pm »
For some reason I can't get KDS to talk to the bike.  Comes up with a .002 communications error.  I do IT work so I know that the USB driver has loaded and it shows "KDS" with the USB connection.  I'm using KDS version 3 and tried 3.04 with XP.  This used to work, I'm not sure why it now does not.  Any thoughts?

I hooked the bike up a few years ago when I bought it and it connected.  I'm currently clueless as to why it won't connect now.  This is an ABS bike so it uses the 6 pin to 8 pin adapter.

The earlier version of the KDS black box 57001‐1648 requires the 'counter measure' cable 57001‐1724.  Is yours a -1648 black box or the later -1725?  The latest version of the software is 3.1.4 p/n 57001-1802 but if it worked previously with 3.04 it should work again eh.

I have the earlier 57001-1648, but I don't know what the "counter measure" cable is?  The KDS manual does not show another cable is needed other than what I have.

See page 46 below and the few pages prior of the training manual for the explanation of the early & later type KDS box.  You need the counter measure cable to make it work with your -1648 box.

I'm beginning to think that the last time I had this working was with my earlier, non-ABS, 09 C14.  I see that I don't have that cable.  How is this "counter measure" cable used?

ABS or non shouldn't matter as the ABS system is independent.  That cable connects directly to the KDS box then to the 6/8 connector to the bike.

Received the cable today and it now seems to communicate, but with my spare ECU installed it says "ECU does not match database".  Guess I'll have to wait until my ECU gets back from Steve with a Mountain Runner flash before I can ride again.

You need the latest version of the software as detailed in reply 3 to get it to recognise a newer ECU than what's in your KDS software's database - but you won't need it to get your bike going with the original ECU as you simply install it and ride.

With Freddy's excellent support I now have KDS running correctly and have added my backup ECU.   :)

I just took a ride with the stock ECU and flash.  The first thing I noticed is the huge lack of torque that Steve's Evolution flash had.  A Mountain flash update is on the way.

:great:  You'll need KDS again when you reinstall the original ECU, but you know that.   ;)

Hmmm...  I figured it would "know" both ECUs, but I guess I figured wrong.  So, I'll do it again when I get the ECU back from Steve.

Some years ago I had an 09 non-ABS that my KDS system worked with and the bike "knew" both ECUs.  I could swap them without the KDS and it didn't complain.

I've never swapped ECUs so I may be wrong on that - which would be a first.    >:(    :)
