No or very low oil after stting for couple months
« on: February 15, 2018, 05:30:33 pm »
I tried to search for this scenario or one like it and came up with nothing that fits.  I had the oil changed at the dealership in November 2017, took it home and then put it away for winter (in Michigan).  I parked it on the side stand in garage.  Then, in early January, I trailer it to New Hampshire.  Today, We have some nice weather and decided to take it for a ride.  When I checked the oil prior to starting, I noticed that no oil is visible in the window.  There has been no indication of any leaks (either in Michigan or in New Hampshire).  Can sitting on the side-stand for so long cause this?   Any thoughts?

I plan to change the oil (or whats left of it) and the filter, but I would like to know what caused this condition.

You didn't say, but did you verify that the oil level was correct after having it serviced?

Are you checking the the oil level on the SIDE STAND or on the CENTER STAND?  The side stand will show no oil in the sight-glass.  Check it with the bike level on the CENTER STAND.

I am certain that I did check it after service, but I do not specifically remember doing so.  I do know that I did not get any warning lights/messages regarding the oil on the way home from the oil change.  I checked it on the Center-stand and I cannot see the oil.

Only a couple of possibilities then:

1) The oil was NOT properly filled when you parked it.  Top it off and keep an eye on it it.

2) The oil leaked out to SOMEWHERE??  If it's not on the floor there is really no place else for it to go while sitting.  A running bike can burn the oil and it goes out the exhaust or it can go into the coolant.  But there is a limit to how much can go into the cooling system until it starts overflowing.

My vote goes with #1.  I'm guessing your dealer did NOT properly fill the oil.

Hi Chris, Welcome to the forum. Oil is checked while the bike is sitting on center stand. Finding truly level cement to hoist up on the center stand could be problematic. I try to use the same place In my garage when checking oil. You would not believe the differences in oil level in using different places in the garage. How do I know the spot I use is actually level? I don't but when adding recommend oil amounts when changing oil seems to be pretty close after it's all said and done.

As it happens, I looked at my C-14 today after it has set for some time and noticed the oil level was low.
So, I cranked it and let it idle for about 10 minutes on the CS, and then I let it set about 10 minutes.

Oil level then checked fine...
(JUst like the C-10) I think the oil migrates out of the sight glass over time.
(Others, am I correct)??
Do not add oil until you do this.

Always check the dealers work before riding away . If anyone will make a mistake , the dealer will . Try not to deal with the dealer if possible .

Perhaps it was full but over the top of the sight glass and with nice new oil, it was just clear and you couldnt see the oil because you were looking right through it. I have noticed this before on this bike and others that use a sight glass.

Old N Slow, I am glad you added that and beat me to it, I know of a novice owner who did just that, thought the CC was empty cuz the oil was so light and clear, kept adding oil till it over flowed.

+1. Similar, a quick check (without placing on the center stand) is balancing the bike on the center stand points while someone else observes the oil reading in the sight glass.

It's funny, my dad (who rides a larger motorcycle and changes his own oil) said the same thing this morning, but each oil change from the same dealer, has looked like standard, new oil.

Thank you to everyone for the feedback, I will likely just drain what is in there, and replace it. Once I do that I will reply with the result.

Shops usually have the bike on a lift for all work which puts both wheels parallel to the ground. Filling to midpoint on the sightglass like this the glass will show empty with the bike on centerstand which puts the rear wheel 2inches above the front wheel.

I drained the oil, but it was not as much as it should have been. It appeared to be clean. I refilled it with the proper amount and I can now see the oil. However,  now there is a white substance on the window that was not there after previous oil changes. I am not sure what it is. Any thoughts?

Could be moister from sitting.  Go ride it a decent ride if its moister it will evaporate.

The white, usually milky, substance is just water.  There is always some that condenses in the cold crankcase.  Go for a ride and the engine heat will drive it out.

I am not ready to give up yet...plus I owe too much on this one.  I cannot imagine that a little moisture is the end of life.

The white stuff was in the oil window...outside the house windows, the white stuff is now mostly gone...for now.  I rode it today  :motonoises: and strum called it, the white was likely moisture from sitting with low oil. The oil looks good in the crankcase window.

Thank you for all the feedback.  It is greatly appreciated.
