Title: Push-starting a fuel-injected bike

A friend of mine was traveling out of state and had starter problems on his BMW R1150S. He went through a flooded stretch of road and the water got into his starter, which made it fail the next morning when he went to fire up his bike.     He said you could not push-start or bump-start fuel-injected bikes, which seemed odd to me. I don't have one to try it hence this post.     Can you bump-start or push-start a fuel-injected bike?     thanks

At first they thought it was the battery, and tried to jump-start it with a car using jumper cables. When that didn't work they bought a new BMW battery from a dealer and it still didn't work.     So... can you push-start a fuel-injected bike with a new fully charged battery?

I found this on the R6 forum.  http://www.r6.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2919    Just as long as the battery is good then give it a push. Might have to figure out what gear start in because the rear wheel will lock up because of the engine compression.

That is what I thought... the only other point would be the shaft drive but that should be ok too, at least for an occasional push-start.     Instead my friend has to drive a 500+ mile round trip to pick up the bike in his truck. He was traveling with a friend and they could have pushed it then rode back home. I figure let it idle and have the other watch it when you're in the head or getting a bite to eat. What do I know though.

I have push started fuel injected Gold Wings. It works just fine, but the battery has to have enough juice to power on the ECM and fuel pump and associated relays. If the voltage drops below around 10 volts, you may not be able to push start it.    If the battery is low, remove the fuses for the tail lights and headlights to reduce the load on the battery, and then try to push start it.
