The trip that only started
« on: August 12, 2016, 03:36:32 pm »
Almost a year ago Dave A and I began planning our mini monster vacation through the Co and UT Bdr. 18 days of riding and camping,  Epic.

Now the rest of the story.....
Loaded the bikes on a trailer on Tuesday morning. Lost contact with the shipper on Thurs after hearing bikes would be delivered in a few hours from my contact. No further word. Bill texts me later nite and says bikes never arrived. Can't get in touch with shipper.  Getting a little worried.
Board our plane this morning, too early to call Denver  (time difference), find out from Bill  once we land in MN that the shipper was in accident about 3 hours out from Denver.  Trip is over before we even arrived.
Going to fly in to Denver now and use Bill's Truck to see carnage at towing company lot.  Need to figure out return trip home now.
So incredibly bummed out........

Extreeeeeme bummer man...
Bring a calculator and paper with ya, and a camera.....

Somehow id have to say the carnage after the fact if it happened to me, would excede the carnage already transpired...

Let's see, new bike, as farkled as the old one, which they can keep... gear, all of it, non refundable flight tickets, lodging, rental car, shipping costs and insurance already paid for, license and registration fees, lost time and anguish, food and supplies on the road....
That's gonna be a big debt they owe you guys.....

Hopefully a shiney new Koolaid bike is in your near future....

I am planning 10 days UT BDR next year. Was considering shipping the bikes. Guess I will trailer instead. Sorry for the luck. Huge disappointment.

Wow....Matt...awful news Bruh. I'd bang the company for the plane tickets and any/all expenses incurred, not that'll it ever make up for all the hours/days/weeks of planning...you could probably rent bikes and expense those fees too?

Major suckage!

Read the fine print very carefully on your shipping contract. It doesn't matter what they told you, the only thing that counts is what is in writing  and signed.

Wow Matt... that really sucks :(
Not just the possible damage to the bikes, but the disappointment after all that anticipation.
From personal experience with shippers (King United), be VERY careful before you agree to any settlements. We are are still dealing with our movers, and have obtained the small claims forms...
Our experience has been that they look for any way to deny claimed items, and then try to get you to settle.
Hoping the best for you guys... wish there was something of real help.

Hate that for you, I really do. It's one thing to have a dream trip ended through no fault of your own, but before it starts, and damaging to your bike makes it far worse. I can't think of anything I can do to help, but if you can, let me know.

That would be a hard thing to handle. I hope you get a fair settlement from the shipper.

On the other hand I'm encouraged to see two COGgers, OMC and The Wizard reaching out with possibilities to salvage the vacation.  Above and beyond what I'd expect

So sorry to hear of this.  Hope it turns out well for you.

Now this is a good reminder to all of us if we ever have to ship a bike somewhere.
IF possible photograph the heck out of it either right before you give it to the shipper or while they are strapping it down or boxing it up.

IF there was just a little damage I could see them saying it was like that when they got the bikes, so they could get out of paying.

Accidents happen - if they make it right that's one thing - but I guess we will have to wait for the "rest of the story".

Well, they are a major player in OTR trucking.. so they are fully bonded and insured... problem is, if the driver was hosed up, or in violation... welll. That's a bummer too..
But the company is on the top tier list, so what transpires means a lot...
Personally, when I moved from Va. To Ohio, I went out, and bought the mega tire chocks at h/f, built my own pallets, rented a Uhaul, and a truck hauler trailer for my extra truck, paid a fellow COGr to haulit, and a rental car for his return trip, mind you I hauled 4 bikes in the truck...

I had about the same cost involved, even with providing the food and return, and all the expenses for the bikes A to B, and driver home..

That company based a one way haul, for the same stuff I did, at $2700... screw dat.
The knsult is... you send one bike for $XX... the truck rolls no matter what... if there is a bike next to it, realllly just how much more is acceptable to charge? 2x?? I don't think so..  oh, that company wouldn't carry my "hazardous" ammo stockpile either... heheheh. Well, that all went in the truck with my bikes.. unfortunatly after I got pizzed and ditched about 200# of very expensive reloading powder and primers.... arggggggg....
Sorry for highjack,
Let's just all cross fingers, and hope the "matt tour 2016" is compensated well, and he is somewhat settled.. nothing can give him his worth on the many hours of planning tho... if I had a bottle of  Pappy Van Winkle, id sharenit with ya...but alas, I'm poor, so I suggest a couple bottles of NyQUill..
