Title: What is typical C14 fuel mileage? I have a C10
Post by: LeeM on October 23, 2017, 03:07:53 am
Hello  all. I have a California Connie C10. The bike seems to be jetted a little rich and I get up to 38 miles per gallon commuting 14 miles provided I drive easy. On a trip out I-80 with lots of steady high speed, I saw some instances over 40  mpg.

Anyhow, I wonder how the C14 does in the mileage area. Does the fuel injection and vvt improve the miles per gallon?

Before I bought the Connie, I was looking at Honda's 700 CC twin that was based on Honda Fit high mileage engine design. That bike is said to do 66 MPG, but that is simply not in the power and performance class of the Connie bikes.

Others with direct knowledge will follow I'm sure but the 14 with the Shoodaben flash are getting some pretty good MPG numbers, better than what you are getting now
Edit to add;
That Honda is great for mileage but not great on the fun meter. My Versys 650 is getting 50.3 MPG riding it for fun, not economy. About a third of a second slower than the c-10 in the quarter mile, decent suspension with cartridge forks and about 200 lbs lighter.

Pretty sure I avg'd a solid 46/7 on my last trip, and most of that was hwy miles.

I'm running Steve's Flash with a modified Dual Exhaust system.

I don't really pay close attention to my fuel economy too often, but I am not at all disappointed with
performance and economy of this bike and Steve's Flash.  :great:

You can do better than 45MPG with the C14 in ECO mode or running SISF's flash if you baby her a bit, but what does that really equate to- a 15% difference. If gas is $3.00/g (premium), you would be saving about $2.00 a tankful. The difference in cost between a C10 and the C14 is gonna take you a long, LONG time to see any monetary benefit/ROI. Moving into a C14 does get the right wrist rolling a bit more, along with the fun factor- R=1.0 along with diminishing returns. Pure economics is NOT a rational reason to move up to the C14, even if you could get into an 08/09 for sub $5k.

Just my .02

The problem with the C14 is that it's VERY difficult to resist the urge to twist the throttle.  If you can ride "gently" it's easy to get 45+ mpg.  But if you succumb to the ever-present temptation to open it up, then it's quite easy to get 35-40 mpg.

Bone-stock engine/ECU/intake/exhaust with both my '08 ABS and '12.

Mileage is anywhere between 42-48MPG on the highway, depending on speed and drag of accessories (large windshield and trunk).

I have the EVO flash and get around 40 mpg, why mine is so low I don't know but I have seen others get 45 with the EVO

I have a 2017 with about 3200 miles on it now.  I just did a 230 mile day that included some freeway riding and Palomar Mountain loop.  The freeway riding was 75-80 mph.  I averaged 46mpg, stock, no flash.

38.5 before the flash, 44.5 with the flash.

Terrain where you ride, traffic, what you weigh, how tall you are, how "loud" you ride it..... all affect it.

I have an '11, no flash, and California gas. I'm getting low 40's on a 43 mile commute from sea level to 1800' and back down. Oh, I'm NOT easy on the throttle all the time. my trip to Colorado and back was about 45, with the exception of a 125mph run through Nevada.

2016 under 1,000 miles (will be over  today after my commute) so not broken in yet, the DIC says 38.4 average this is the third tank of fuel since being reset. I don't trust any DIC I am sure if it were to be hand calculated it would be far less. However not being broken in yet this bike would not be a fair comparison... Fuel mileage is a fickle thing it is so dependent on how the vehicle is operated. My wife gets upset because she says I always gun it at the starts and she is careful not to but I still pull down better fuel mileage in all our vehicles. It is hard to explain to her that time to get to travel speed is also a factor. I have to laugh when I see people worried about fuel mileage on a bike, before getting the Connie I was daily commuting in a highly modified twin turbo Duramax LOL

2012 with Steve's decel flash.  I like to wrap the tach around quite often, and my average fuel economy stays right around 45 mpg.  Cruising back roads about 55-65mph, I've seen as high as 53-55mpg and absolutely flogging it in the mountains it might drop to 38-40mpg.  I don't care too much about fuel mileage, and mainly just keep an eye on it in case it suddenly drops, as an early indicator of a possible problem.

2008 39 mpg. It not fun to ride and trying to save gas. I like to pass other vehicles in rapid fashion. I also do not like 6th gear or 5th gear. I have a higher than stock windshield on the bike also and it eats gas. If you ride with a stock windshield up it will cost you a few mpg's. It will also get better mileage after a air filter change.

For those of you who have had an increase in MPG after a flash. Did you change your air filter at the same time?

Nope, same filter, as mine had no more than perhaps 3 thousand miles on it before the flash....aren't air filters good for 12-15k miles?

Stock 2016 normally around 42-44 mpg one-up, with mixed hwy/city.
38-40 mpg if riding two-up.
About 34 if we're twisting the throttle to have some fun.

Oddly enough, I get better mileage on a C-10 or C-14 riding two up. My riding buddy says it's the way I ride (alone). WHAT???

And then there's me... Even before Steve's flash I was only getting mid 30's. Now I have a full Muzzy's exhaust and Steve's full system flash and on a good day I'll get low 30's. I think it's more to do with my riding style than anything else.

My mileage on my 2011 (EVO flash) with 40,000 miles on it is directly in proportion to temperatures. If I'm riding in 40 degree temps I usually get about 43 to 45 mpg. Today it was in the mid 80's and I rode 230 miles and got 47.2 mpg but was cruising 80mph on the freeway for about 100 of those miles with varying speeds for the rest of the miles. I'm sure if I wanted too today I could have made 50mpg+ but that's no fun. My best ever mileage was 52.7 mpg on a full tank on Steve's original flash.

2009, decel flash, 40 mpg almost always,   no difference with flash   I ride like I'm being chased, not crazy but twist that throttle at every chance!

Mine gets the same results as above based on outside temps.  My high mileage was just over 51 mpg on one tank and I'm running the EVO flash.

The 44.1 mpg in my Fuelly icon is lifetime mpg, all 16,000 + of it.  First 2000 miles were stock ecu, then Decel, then EVO.

My Past 12 months, no EVO flash yet.  :(

Fuel economy avg 50.32 MPG (70 - 80 MPH)
...........................min 42.33 MPG
...........................max 58.72 MPG
Fuel costs.........$0.057 per mile
Fuel Price avg $2.86 per gallon

Sorry, i did not collect data on all the ice cream I ate while traveling.
I don't have an app for that.  :-[

Harry, I know where all that ice cream applies... first hand   :??:
2012 with Steve's original flash, My long-term average is ~45 MPG without long trips, climbs just over 46-48 on longer trips. Probably would do better if I exercised a little more fun-control...

Just to bring some more info , let's keep in mind that when we read these kind of threads, we will always look at the data though our own experiences, our own riding conditions. But since I know some background info , let's look at a couple cases.

KevinRLI...if I recall, "LI" stands for "Long Island" as in New York.  While I've never been there I did grow up outside Boston, and know what congested streets are like. Riding in conditions like that,  will KILL fuel economy... and that's reflected in his fuel economy.

Harry Martin... iirc, Harry is a small guy. So now we have a power to weight disparity as compared to some of us more "robust" coggers. That alone is going to increase his fuel economy.

Cooler temps do in fact knock the daylights out of fuel economy. Anything below about 80* starts to get into the economy, and the further down the worse it gets.

Headwinds eat fuel. If your riding into a headwind of lets say 15 mph, then the economy you get would be roughly what you'ld get if you were going 15mph faster. Conversely a tailwind will help economy in the same manner.

A worst case scenario would be a guy riding in city traffic in  cold weather.

A best case scenario would be a guy riding on unobstructed highways or 2 lanes at about 65mph, droning for miles and miles at 85 mph and a tailwind.

Above about 80 mph starts to really suck the fuel too, as would heavy loads, pulling a trailer, etc. uphill climbs are bad, downhill is generally good. altitude requires less fuel, so mountain riding can give some pretty good mileage numbers.

   Something to consider.

  Steve

Just to add more interesting info...

If I'm not trying to meet any kind of schedule...like heading into town to get more ice cream, down wind (heading east), I slow down to like 55 MPH cause I can and there is no big rig on my a$$, I regularly get 70+ MPG - consistently. You know, it's a beautiful day and I just feel like taking it slow, plus, them cruel deer are just waiting to take me out for no reason.

Then on the way home, it's a brutal headwind. I never speed up cause I know better. I always see people passing me hell-bent to get somewhere in a hurry, and they are prepared to battle 40+ MPH winds doing 70+ MPH. That makes for a 110+ MPH headwind (not counting the 25+ MPH gusts). Go figure. They run out of gas trying to make it to the next gas station, which some are rarely open on the weekends in the Wyoming wasteland. Sometimes the pumps are down for whatever reason and GPS won't tell you that important piece of knowledge.

Here in Wyoming, semis are usually found laying on the side of the road, asleep, cause gusting winds push them over.

Anyway, point is, you gotta drive the conditions to save fuel. I don't have stop and go traffic like most city folk. I try to be as frugal and defensive as possible with driving scooter or cage.

When I hit the twisties, I trade fuel for fun. It's that simple.

I've owned my 2011 since new in 4/'12. I currently have 43,000 miles logged.
I had Steve's EVO flash done at around 40,000.

Prior to the flash, I almost always ran in ECO mode.
Combined city/highway usually averaged 42-45mpg.
Long trips, keeping speeds around 70 mph, I have been able to achieve 50mpg in ECO.
Since Steve's EVO flash, I now average 46 combined.

Motorcycle mpg is very subjective to conditions, though. Head winds will knock it in the dirt.
Heavy right hand knocks it in the dirt!
Types of road surfaces, like chip & seal, or lots of twisties will, too. Also, tall windscreens!

Best mpg's on most bikes happen usually if you are on straight flat roads, steady 60mph or less, less start/stops, no 2-up or heavy loads, easy braking.
But it isn't easy on a C14!

But, after riding a carbed bike for years, fuel injection ROCKS!
You gonna like it a lot!
Bob

All:
My 2013 w/23K recent trip from GA to Waltham, MA close to 50mph, in eco, no flash, cruising 75. Up and back, great mileage. Temps were low 80s to mid to hi 50s.

Around town, occasional warp drive, 40-44 mph here in Columbus, GA

Thanks for the fuel mileage comments.

Here is a photo of a test I did. I measured the amount of CO2 coming out of the tailpipe of an idling 1000 cc Connie.

In the months since, I have come across a problem. The hot exhaust (around 120 F) rises very rapidly when it comes out the tailpipe. It causes the measured readings with the CO2 meter to be too low.

Best wishes. I see a '14 commuting sometimes in the morning on Highway 1. Hey there!

Anyhow, I wonder how the C14 does in the mileage area.

On 2010 or later you should average 40 - 45 mpg in the ECO mode.
It's really hard to get above 47.

I believe 47 mpg can be achieved under certain conditions.
1. Very small wind screen in the down position.
2. Rider is 125 pounds or less and 5'2" or less in height.
3. Absolutely no passenger.
4. No top case and no additional luggage for sure.
5. None ethanol gasoline would help.
6. Very fresh air filter and well tuned engine.
7. 80 degrees or warmer temparaure with the humidity of 65% or less.
8. Traveling from North Carolina to Georgia. (Down the hill)
When I'll drop 100 pounds on the South Beach diet and get shorter, I will try. :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I get about 35 but tend to drive aggressively. When I'm riding with my Goldwing buddies, I get around 40. Never better than 41, and honestly, I can only remember getting MPG that good once or twice. However, I didn't buy the bike for the MPG, I was riding a 900 Vulcan before that and couldn't stand the vibration at highway speeds nor the fact that I had to make an appointment to pass a car. Neither of these are issues with the Connie! It would be a perfect bike if it had Cruise control and speakers in the faring!

2011 with steves EVO flash, 55 rear tire, very seldom in eco mode and I average 43-44 mpg, 210 lbs with gear on and a Cee Bailey windscreen which probably hurts my mpg a little.

Last weekend I rode 450 miles for a ride to eat.  First tank was 38 mpg being in no hurry to get to where I was going, the second tank running 80 mph on I 16 for 110 miles with some back roads before hand, I was surprised to get 42 mpg.  My fuel mileage is all over the place with no rhyme or reason as to why.  I need to quit worring about it, since I didn't buy the bike for fuel mileage but fun mileage   ;D   I do have Steves EVO flash.
