ZX14 header blocking off left side exhaust
« on: February 23, 2019, 11:48:40 pm »
Hello All.

I am attempting to put on an old ZX14 header ( no cat) and ZX14 muffler ( chrome- much nicer than potato launcher) on right side only. I am having issues finding something to block off the other side of the header. I have been everywhere an looked everywhere online. Any suggestions.

Also, I have read other people saying you need to "smooth" the flow to make sure it goes to the right side??? Anyone know what this means.

I have the exhaust mounted on with ZG header now- but it appears the extra cat in muffler is causing some missing.

Thanks

I built what you are looking to do. I cut off the left side outlet, but at an angle up into the collector pipe, not just at the edge of the outlet. I fashioned a rounded plate to cover the cut. the result is the collector more or less smoothly guiding the exhaust to the right muffler.

I also think a single stock zx14 muffler is going to really restrict your power. You really need at least a slip on muffler with no decibel killer. Steve

Thanks Steve. I have tried a slip on, with and without DB killer, but have not been happy with the either the quality or level of sound.
sound level is about equally important to me as looks and performance.

I assume what you did required welding?

I'm not quite sure what the allure of cutting off one exhaust ports is, if you're looking to improve sound and Looks?

I have Zx14 headers with Akra CF Slip ons, and I converted for both of those reasons.
The "balance" of the duals is really what I wanted, and then sound. More power was presumed, but Steve has myth-busted that urban legend with his Flash.

Yesterday, at a rest stop, I was approached by a young guy in a car, that pulled up to me and asked what kind of bike i was riding.  (i have all the badges off)
When I told him, he said "damn, that thing sounded really GOOD when you passed me going 85 a few miles back!"
He told me he rides a Ducati.....so HIGH praise, indeed!  :motonoises:

I couldn't stand the offset of the LH pipe needed to clear the final drive, looked like Marty Feldman made it.  I do switch back and forth once in awhile so I didn't want to cut and weld the LH spigot shut.  I ended up making a carbon fiber cap with high-temp resin.

Fix-ur-Critter, I machined an aluminum plug that I installed in the left port.
Simple installation, EZ to remove when/if you decide to add a left muffler.

To keep the flow smooth, the plug I made is long enough that the end of the plug is smooth/flush with the bottom of the exhaust port.
Get the ID, OD, and length Measurements of your exhaust port and I can send you mine {if I can find it}, or build a new one for you.

For those that ask "why",,, I was experimenting with 1 and 2 Slip-on arrangements.  :sign0151:
ie;  {I tried unsuccessfully} to build a "FCV" {"Flux Capacitor Valve"} that would restrict flow at low RPM / Partial throttle and open for higher RPM / WOT operation.
{My hope was to gain torque at low RPM's and also increase power at high RPM's (Couldn't make it work)}…   >:D

In the end, I built my own left mid pipe, and went with 2 Area P Slip-on's.
Love the sound. Runs good too.

Ride safe, Ted
