zx14 tb's, zx14 headers + cans, PCV + autotune install has begun
« on: February 21, 2015, 11:48:42 pm »
I have had the parts sitting in my garage for a year.  Today I finally decided to start tackling this install.

I'm over 1/2 way done now.  I am waiting on the o2 sensor to be welded to my header and kind of at a standstill.

I will say that the TB swap was the hardest part so far but it did go pretty smoothly.

The other issue I have run into is the headers are off the zx14 without cats in them.  Apparently so are the zx mufflers I bought *purchased header / mufflers separately* so the header to can diameter is smaller than what is on the cans.

It's looking like if I use the C14 gasket + stack the early zx14 gasket under it then it should all work.

Here's a few pics for your enjoyment.

Firehawk, if you go to an autoparts, or look online, they sell layered/stacked bushings to seal the opening.

Oh very good to know.  I had no idea that they could be purchased like that.

connie_rider, can you suggest a place that sells these gaskets by dimensions?

All I can find is the OEM Kawasaki ones that I am thinking would work but they're $23 EACH before shipping!!!!!

My measurements say I will need two 51mm x 62mm gaskets to do a single gasket solution.

Which Exhaust Cans did you choose?
I went with an 09 header, removed the cats, and Akrapovic dual slip ons.

Going to get the Guhl reflash done this year, and maybe in the future, do a PCV + autotune, and TB's if I get crazy.

Will watch your project with malicious intent.  >:D

good luck and keep us posted, PLEASE!

Part #11061A may work

http://www.bikebandit.com/2012-kawasaki-ninja-zx-14r-zx1400ecf/o/m154537#sch755142

I think I'm going to just buy a pair of 07 zx14 gaskets and file them down if needed.  I'll end up with the larger ones on top of the smaller ones.  Being they're some kind of graphite materiel they should stack / work fine.

Thanks for the research though!

The header is the 07' and older style without the cats.

The cans look to be the 08' and newer style where the cats are in the headers.  *from what I understand this style cans will have no cats in them.*

07' and older header to cans = small diameter.

08' and newer header to cans = larger diameter.  *same size as our c-14's*

The 07' header pipe fits perfectly inside the C14 header. *if that makes sense*

I measured and the OD of the later *large diameter* cans is 62mm.

The OD of the header *small diameter 07 and older* is 51mm.

So I will need 62mmOD / 51mmID seal *seems nearly impossible to find by measurements* OR use my C14 seal plus put the smaller 07' and earlier seal inside it.

Lucky for me I had the original seal off my C14 *obviously* but ONE of the zx14 cans had the seal still left in it, which happens to be the exact same as the C14 one.  So all I need now is a pair of the earlier smaller diameter seals to make this all work.

Does anyone have a suggestion for hanging the  left can on the bike?

I'm a-ok with one of those wrap around things like aftermarket cans use.  I don't care if one side is mounted differently than the other side.

Your overthinking, or I'm misunderstanding what you need.?

Go to Ebay or "ANY" auto parts store.

Will fit inside of the muffler inlet so it is not seen.

Here's a for instance; ($7.00)   http://www.ebay.com/itm/One-1-3-4-to-1-5-8-1-1-2-1-3-8-EXHAUST-PIPE-ADAPTER-SLEEVE-MOTORCYCLE-MUFFLER-/121561309243?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c4d9e603b&vxp=mtr

I don't know the diameters your need, but I just punched Muffler Adapter..
Do the same, look at what's offered, and you should be able to find what you want.

I am also in the process of installing a ZX14 exhaust and PCVon my bike, I went to the ZX14 forum and found a good deal on a full Yoshimura Exhaust including header, it is polished stainless but I am having it Ceramic coated to keep the heat down.

Had to lengthen the mid pipe a couple of inches to get the right fit.

Moved the mounting strap to fit the Connie location.

Had to make an extension for the muffler to lower it below the bag.

Here is the fit below the bike, it doesn't interfere with the center stand.

THIS is it!  Muffler *adapter*

Thank you!

EDIT:  Seems like this style isn't sold in larger sizes.  I need to go from ~62mm down to ~51mm which is roughly 2.4" down to 2"....

still hunting!

If I were handy with a welder this would be super easy however I want to keep the ability to easily slide them on and off as needed + want them to seal well.

Hmmmm.....

I have a roll of this metal tape available.  I am considering just layering it on the header until the gaskets I have fit snug then calling it good.

I think I'm going to try this.  If they blow out and leak then I'll go with the adapter / double graphite gasket route.

Dont bother with the tape....it burns right out. I know this guy....

If you look in the exhaust pipe repair section, they have exhaust tape. It was for poor people, like me. If you had a hole in your muffler, you use that tape and the inspector never caught you.

It will make up this space, no problem. Its not strong, but it seals like crazy.

Firehawk, not sure where you are on this project?
2" and 2 1/2" (or 2.4") sizes are automotive pipe sizes.
Should easily be found under automotive muffler components.

If you go to any reputable muffler shop, drop $20 on the pipe dude, he can expand any desired piece of pipe using a mandril to what you need, or even expand multiple ones, to be used in conjunction, with split bushing gaskets...

I had a bunch of manual expansion mandriles, and could easily expand some pipes by 1/4" in diameter.... before they split.

Got my PCV programmed today after the new exhaust install and couldn't be happier, I was amazed at how much more power it is making now, it lifts the front wheel with ease.

For anyone looking, I have a full set of ZX-14 headers and exhausts pipes I'd like to get rid of. I bought them thinking I'd put them on the bike, and then later changed my mind. The headers are the version without the catalytic converter in them.
