2002 Front Fork Caps
« on: June 11, 2019, 07:22:51 pm »
Will any 41 mm Kawasaki fork cap/preload adjustor (or other brand) fit on a 2002 Connie?  I really buggered mine up when changing the springs.  It took a foot long crescent wrench and some ill thoughts to get it to move.

Thanks,
Rich

simple answer is no.... it's sized and configured specific to the actual tube, threads, internal stop, adjuster, etc.,

all models from '94 thru '06

11012-1885   CAP
92055-1050   RING-O,FORK TOP CAP

sorry, Its $$ bucks unless you find them on ebay... not much choice, other than ask in the parts section here... somebody has some..

new caps are like $40+ each...
Murph has complete new forks, he has stored, unused, and just posted them for sale...  good deal...

Just out of curiosity sake, because I've run into this on other bikes (and curious if the connies are the same), were the top triple clamp bolts still torqued down when you tried to remove the caps? I've seen other bikes where the cap would not budge unless the top triple clamp bolts were loosened off, therefore taking pressure off the threads of the cap at the top. Once the top clamp bolts were loosened, the cap loosened with very little force.

I can't say if they were or not, not my bike, but I will give you a x10 on that conclusion, as it DOES make a big difference.. but a TON of bikes never have the fork caps removed, and even with top clamps loosened, get rusted in place...
Every time I remove one, I not only loosen, but I remove those bolts completely, and also tap a flat bladed screw driver into the "slit" to open it up, to remove any remaining compression on the tube... by the way, I also do this when removing a front axle, remove the pinch bolts, tap a screw driver in, and leave it "spreading" the gap.. to take the compression off the threaded spacer/nut/bolt head.. makes a lot of sense.

anyway, great advice on your part...  :great: :great: :great:

Interestingly enough, the left came off easily and I didn't loosen the top triple tree bolts.  I did loosen them on the right tube, and that is the one that I had the issue.

I might have a couple of those caps that I don't need. If interested, I'll dig them out and check on the condition. Where at in the North Central region?

Batboy, do you have caps for a 95+ Connie?  {88 and 02 are not the same}
Seems that I recall you bought some of the newer {95+} style?

Correct, I have a 1988, but I was upgrading the fork springs and hoped to use the later C10 adjustor caps. I picked up a couple from eBay, but figured out pretty quick they won't fit. So, I don't really need them. I looked in my closet and I found the forks adjustors, both are in very good condition. Sounds like Richard really needs the parts. If you pay for shipping, you can have them.
