busted connie
« on: December 12, 2017, 12:57:46 am »
A member of my family has a 99 Connie that is in excellent condition, with one exception.....the engine is toast.  I think it hydro locked.  He said it started with a bag one morning and then it ran fine for a while.  The next morning it wouldn't crank.  He took it to a shop where they managed to get it started.  It ran but had a knock so they shut it down quickly.  I'm about 300 miles away so I haven't seen it or heard it try to run.  He isn't a mechanic so he hasn't got the skills or tools to replace or repair the engine and is wondering what to do next.  I'm trying to help him make a decision and would welcome some input from you, the Connie group.  The bike is too nice to junk but maybe someone could get some use out of it.  The bike is located in Wichita, Ks.

Another hydrolock demise that didn't have to happen.  :'(

It's a 19 year old bike, not running. Not much value, maybe $3-500(?) depending on farkles and condition.

Reasonably fixable with engine in place if the hydro happened in cylinders #2 or 3. Otherwise the case has to be split. A used engine would be a suggested route for a new owner.

The owner is aware that his bike isn't worth much.  I know that somewhere there is a Connie owner that had a mishap and has a wrecked bike with a good motor.  This would give them a chance to put 2 together and make one.

What is it you are seeking to do... assess the damage or dispose of the bike?  The Subject implies you may want to fix it. If this is the case refining the subject may help. Also, what is it you need to know to assess the damage. If you're looking to sell/give away the bike, I suggest a post to the Emporium (classifieds) section.

There is more to be gained by members raising hands saying "I'll do that" instead of pointing fingers saying "nobody's doing that."

The owner, nor I, am interested if fixing the bike but really didn't want to push it out into the fencerow to rot.  We know its not worth much but would like to see it go to someone who could use what is left of it to keep another bike on the road or use other bike's parts to put this one back on the road.  I didn't know the emporium existed until 2 nights ago and may go that route with it, but was just putting the word out in the Connie community that this project was available.

Bummer about the bike. Older C10 with hydrolock in Kansas in the winter -- jeez, that's the very definition of a pig in a poke.  :'(

Might I suggest posting this in the C10 Emporium? It sounds like you're basically looking for someone to take/buy the bike and breathe new life into it, and that's the place folks look for those deals.

Other alternative is to respond to The Wizard and tell him to swing by on his next loop thru everywhere.

Best of luck

I've got some pictures of the busted Connie.  Nice bike, been garaged.  Clear title.  In Wichita, Ks.  Will send pics via email by request.
