Buying my first Concours!
« on: January 16, 2018, 01:58:54 am »
Hi guys,
First post, first everything.  I'm going to buy a 1990 Concours on Friday.  The owner says it needs a new back tire, and the petcock leaks.  I've been reading just a little, and already know that COULD be an issue.  I haven't ridden in a few years, and had a BMW R1150RT-P then.  Can you give me a little advice on what to look for when I meet this bike?
Thanks in advance!

Oh, here's the bike, if anyone wants to offer any other sage advice.  The low price is what has me wary.  I know it's winter and folks just want to get rid of their bikes sometimes, but...

With a petcock leak I would check to be sure it hasn't been hydro-locked. Steve in sunny Florida has a YouTube video on a simple easy way to check. If it has been hydro-locked and has a bent rod you'll want to walk away. Besides a crash a hydro-lock is about the only thing that will kill the old C10.

Read up on hydro-locks. Big risk with an old bike and a leaking petcock

And these bikes are cheap anyway. Most in great condition from the early 90s isn't going to sell for more than 1200-1400 anyway. So, yours with high miles and some defect isn't unreasonably priced for a winter sale.

As long as the bike hasn't already hydro-locked, then you have a line on what has been a great bike for a whole lotta folks.

You can prevent hydrolock, as long as you are willing to get your hands dirty and learn what the bike needs.

I had a R1150RT...it was night and day from a Concours 1000. You'll find the Connie much lighter, nimbler, easier to maintain, and yeah cheaper for parts.
But it won't be cheaper for service. Do it yourself or learn how here.
Congrats, I think you can do really well with this machine!

I notice a COG sticker on the windshield.  If the current owner is a COG member, it could bode well for being an upfront guy and might give you some references to confirm history on the bike.  If a previous owner was a COG member, it means there's a sticker on the windshield.

Good looking bike to mess with. (Maybe you can post up an Intro thread on you and your bike when you get it home).

If the petcock leaks, get a new one from Murph's Kits () and replace it. Some guys rebuild them, but for the money ( https://www.murphskits.com ) and hassle (to me), I think it's good insurance to replace the OEM every few years. When you're messing with the tank and petcock, look for rust flakes in the tank any residual water in the lower corners where it tends to settle.

Good luck and come out to some of the SE events. We've got a couple on the calendar for Georgia (just this w/e) and one to come in Tennessee in a couple of months. Several COG guys are around N. Atlanta/N, Ga,so if you need help, cheering, or jeering, we might be available.

Welcome!

Everyone, thanks for the replies.  Totally the warm welcome I was expecting.  If the guy is a COGger, I expect I can get much more information out of him when we meet.  Currently in Mississippi/Memphis we are experiencing what must be a deadly snowpocalypse, based on the closed schools and empty grocery stores.

I also used to own a Vulcan, maybe 8 years ago, and knew the abundance of riders, parts, and advice, would be awesome for this bike.

The community for the RT was amazing, too, but sometimes I found that I was the first to post of something, or the first to do a procedure and people would ask if I would put a video on YouTube about it,  and that's disconcerting when you're a newbie.

I think I've still got some spline lube in the garage.  Does that Honda Moly stuff go bad?

Since they're missing, I may not know what I'm looking for.  What are scoops?

Andy, The guy that's selling (Chris) seems to be a stand up guy. (After all, he's a COGger)  :great:
Just ask him if it's been hydrolocked. He'll tell you..

The petcock can leak in 2 ways,,, thru the petcock, (which mighi cause hydrolock).
out of the petcock.  (Which just needs repairing/replacing)

At $650 and it's age, it will need some maintenance.
At $650, and some $$ for parts / and some work from you,, you'll have a good dependable machine..
Sounds like a deal to me.  {If, you can learn to do the basic maintenance it will need}.

Ride safe, Ted

At 60,000 miles, there's a LOT of life left.
A number of guys put more than 200,000 miles on theirs. Mine had ~76,000 when I killed it in the hills on Northern GA :'(
It does look like the right side has a part that is broken off, but you may be able to cobble up a way to install the scoop, and the break will be hardly noticeable.
I also rebuilt my petcosk 2 times, and both worked well. The 1st time lasted for about 5 years and about 50,000 miles. Rebuild not too difficult, but need to pay attention to cleanliness.
Regardless, for $650 it's a good great deal.

Well, I bought her!  She needs a little love, but she seems to run just fine!
I'll be scouring the forums, and if anyone's cruising through north Mississippi, stop in and say hi!
