Title: C-10 Pic Thread: Post the best pics of your classic
Post by: smithr1 on December 15, 2011, 04:16:57 pm
I figured since the C14 section has a thread for posting up pictures we should also.  Please consider this for a sticky.  As you would guess I personally am interested in screen saver shots but post up any pic you want.  Here is one I like of mine.

PS: We have all seen C10s in driveways, lets all dig up our best shots that have something interesting in the background so I can add them to the screen saver collection I have.

Not the most "Scenic" pic, but the weathers pretty crappy now.  Cant wait for spring when Connie can get photo'd in some nice locations.

Edit to change:

Well since Webshots shut down my previous links. I have now changed my photo's. This photo was taken by Lance Oliver in August 2011 at the COG Green Mountain National at Mount Snow, West Dover, Vermont at the Grand Summit Lodge. I hope Lance does not mind my using his photo of my C10 for this post.

Well I've finally gotten around to digging a few of these out of the big storage drive...

Here's my very first Connie - an '00.  We were on our way up to Deal's Gap in '03.  I have better pictures of her, but this is one of the only shots I have of me actually riding.

Here's my second, an '01, in the camping area at Two Wheels Only in Suches, GA.  Sadly they went out of business in March of 2011.  Good times...

And here we are at the Andersonville National Cemetery with the trailer attached.  This was before I mounted the Sears car-top clamshell.

And it is rarely that clean, especially with all this pesky road salt they put out in the winter!  Good thing we got a heated bay with floor drains at the Fire Station for frequent rinse cycles.

Great thread - good to get other ideas visually.

Nothing close to scenic yet, with no long trips under my belt.  But technically, this is the best pic of my classic '03 in the fast color, so there you go.

And to think that even six months ago I didn't think I liked the looks of this bike...what was wrong with me?  It doesn't have to be an MV Agusta to be pretty.  I guess what appeals to me is the elemental nature of the bike.  Nothing extra, nothing computerized, big motor, no BS.  I finally figured it out.  Only took 26 years.

^-^ New Guy today. Haven't even picked up my bike yet. Found a near-new 2005 on CL and worked a deal that included a trade for a rifle I don't use. Very excited.

My current ride is a 2004 HD FXST, the black one with the tall skinny front tire. It's basically two wheels, an engine, and a seat. Cool as heck, but a back breaker. I can't ride it for longer than about half an hour.

So, I got this near-new Connie coming this weekend, and I thought I'd check in here to see what's up with this bike, which I have always considered rather clunky looking, but, like everyone else, I thought it was probably a workhorse of a touring rig, which is what I want now that I am "wiser" than I have been in the past.

Previous rides include but are not limited to: RD400Daytona, KZ400, GPZ550, CB750F, GSXR750, Fatboy, Ultra Classic, RC51, CBR1100XX, ZRX1200R, and now a FXST. I have gone 200 miles an hour (Blackbird) and slid both wheels around the curves (GSXR and RC51) and run from the cops a time or two (see ALL above). THose days are, thankfully, far behind me now.

My favorite ride to date has gotta be the ZRX. What a pleasure to ride! But, alas, a woman in a Tercel killed it one morning while I was going to work. By the way, hitting the blacktop at 70 miles an hour will wake you up in a hurry. I don't recommend it. Walked away though - thanks to good luck and good gear! All I got was a broken pinky finger where her car door smashed my front brake lever against the grip with the finger in between, and a bit of road rash on my foot where my right boot came off. Wheee....!

Saturday I will add a 2005 ZG1000 (ten thousand miles on the odo, and it looks like it is still on the showroom floor). Seriously, this thing is pristine. The guy is very cool, and a bit OCD about the bike. He already rebuilt the petcock and installed new tires. I figure I just put some gas in it and GO.

Anyone want to buy a cool low-miles Harley? LOL.

So, here it is: (and no, I am not riding around with the blue cooler bungeed on the back. That stays with him.)

;D The guy just agreed to deliver the bike today. Cracking me up. This thing just fell into my lap. I gotta brag - I am getting this bike for $3,600.00 and a used Ruger .17HMR rifle. LOL. A bike that's essentially brand new for the price of a beater. Sometimes the gods giggle and toss you a bone.

Deal went down last night smooth as silk. The bike is beautiful, although I am going to have to re-learn the centerstand trick. Bike's a bit top-heavy, seems like. ALso going to have to adjust the susopension. It's as firm as an old couch. Online shop manual? Off to the search function.

I had the opportunity to ride from Portland, OR to Klamath Falls, OR for a business meeting.  That's my computer bag roped on the pillion.  Diamond Peak is in the background and I am about a 1/4 mile from the summit of Willamette Pass, on HWY 58, just over 5000 ft elevation.  Breathtaking.  Perfect day.  Perfect memory.

Amazing view!!!   :great:

There's better up here.  This one is on the Haul Road/Dalton Hwy just a couple of miles from the beginning.  While I usually tell riders to drop as much weight as possible in Fairbanks before heading for the Arctic Circle or Deadhorse, I was equipped to camp for a few days if necessary, and loaded down.

That one was taken back in '01.  Found a newer one, with some fall colors and a glacier.

Seems that in most of my photos I concentrate on the scenery and leave the bike out, or it's just a prop in the photo, so there aren't many of Alcan Annie (my Concours) in my collection.  But here are a couple more.  The first one was taken on the Denali Hwy with a small portion of the Alaska Range as the backdrop.

Now this one doesn't show her best side, but I've always thought a Connie has an attractive butt.  ;D  This was taken while she was carrying me around the country on the Five Corners On A Connie Ride http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392509 (http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392509).

Ok, here's a few of my 86.  Got her two years ago with 21k on the clock.  Since it was neglected by the last couple owners I've only gotten 2k on it since because of replacing the forks, brake lines, entire cooling system, etc.  Hopefully I can lay a lot more down soon.

Freshly revived connnie. Its a 99 that was given to me non running by a friend along with an 83 suzuki gs750e which I also got running but sold. I put alot of work into bringing this thing back to life and my friend spent a week painting it. It has 70,000 on it but the inside is perfectly spotless and I got it running like a top. PO had laid it down and then parked it. Shortly after someone cut out the battery and it continued to sit for 7 years until I got it. This is the only photo so far but many more are sure to come as we are leaving on a 8,000 mile trip around the US tomorrow. This site has helped me tremendously in fixing and preparing the bike. Thank you.

I think I'll call her Panthera.

Just found this thread while goofing off here at work.  Now I have a strong desire to post some pictures but most of mine have never been scanned and aren't available to me.  Therefore some of the shots I'm going to post now will not be very scenic.

My current '95 as photographed by the previous owner when he was trying to sell it.  It has never looked that good since it became mine and the Rifle windshield was sold to another COGger.

Thought about taking the supermoto to the Piney Woods (east Texas) but SO glad I took the C10.  It was made for those roads.  First time I rode it (April) at, ahem, liberal interpretation of speed limits, and it was a dream.  I would have taken more picturesque photos but it's the Piney Woods, so just imagine a bunch of trees going by really fast.  There you go.

Here's the result of a seven month repaint of my 2003. Why seven months? I'm getting slower in my old age. Many thanks to a fellow COG'er for the right side cowling. I gave free reign to my paint guy to do whatever he wanted to do design wise, I just furnished the colors that he could use.

Here are 3 pics. One I just like, and the other two are my bike in front of some off roadside scenery. All of these were taken out in the Kerrville, Tx area.

(It's hard to see in the thumbnail picture but the deer is made out of a bunch of different metal scraps and parts.)

Here is my scoot, I have not washed her in a few weeks so she looks a bit dull and dirty.

86 ZG1000 -  Front and rear tires are Avon Azaro's  also Multiple Murph parts - speedo cable - Both foot peg brackets and pegs - right mirror ( soon to be the left too )  Clutch star replacement when I did the clutch plates 4 years ago.

The bike in general runs very very well, she has a lot of oomph still in her for being an 86. I do regular oil changes and the moment something arises I address it right away. Soon to do list includes - Holeshot muffs with a stage 1 upgrade - new rotors front and back - left mirror - and if all goes well a new paint job in the next year or two depending if I take off the plastics and street it out.

The middle section of the seat material is a removable section of fake leather for maps or anything in particular I don't want to carry - don't mind the wrinkles, when removed the seat is very clean as I restored it a few years ago, I am very proud of how clean the seat looks, I could have done better for the tuck points but it still turned out better then expected.

I still have yet to build a decent rear plate setup - Cut the rear fender a few years ago - randomly I lost one of the net hooks above the light but plan on custom building led turn signals in those slots

Finally got around to shooting some pics with the bike clean and detailed.

This was a couple of weeks back, just after having the bike fitted with new AVON tires and me installing a K&N air filter (what a huge difference both of those made!). There is also a fairly-new Cee Bailey windshield.

Paint colour isn't quite accurate. I am still finding my way around a new camera that I bought over a month ago.

Here's a pic of my Canada-only '89 Connie.  The pic isn't actually current, as the bike now has a Cee Bailey windscreen and Murph's tipover bars, but it shows the flavor of the bike.

The seat & backrest are custom made.  My wife got tired of the view of the back of my helmet (she's 13" shorter than I am), so the seat needed to be built up, and being squirted off the back of the bike got old quickly, so I needed a backrest...and thought I'd install a trunk to mount it on.  The trunk is a cheapo plastic job, but has stood up flawlessly to 8 years of abuse (and one serious crash - bike was written off, and rebuilt by yours truly) without so much as a mark on it, so it was a worthwhile investment (it holds a full face helmet, 2 pairs of gloves, and a set of rain gear, yet comes off with a key like regular luggage).

While I had the upholsterer rebuilding the seat, I had him use Corbin-style basket-weave type material to reduce the slippery surface of the original seat, and red piping to match the color of the rest of the bike.  I think it complements it nicely.

By the way, she has 100,000 miles on her now, and except for a couple of valve adjustments, a carb rebuild (carbs will be en route to Steve in Florida shortly), and a whole whack of tires, she's never needed anything at all.

Anyway, here she is -

August ride Phoenix, AZ to Missoula, MT to Boise, ID. to Seattle, WA., around Mount Rainier National Park, back to Boise and then a Saddle Sore 1000 ride back home to Arizona. 3846 miles total in 6 days. The pictures are from Lolo Pass and Highways 12 to 95 to 55 and are some of the best riding roads in the NW area states. This area is also where the national rally will be next year, so definitely a must do for those who can make the rally.

To answer a previous question from another Connie rider-my highway pegs are the "Millerized" ones allthough I am not sure he still makes/sells them but they make all the difference in the world on long rides-which I do. I surpassed the 50k mark in the last part of this ride and now have 53k on my 2006 Connie. I also just received my 50k sticker and am trying to decide where to affix.

I'm just getting The Blackbird to a point where she and I have started being friends...  ;D

There is a endless list of work that has gone into making her more reliable such as replacing things that were worn out, rerouting and upgrading the electrical systems, and on and on and on. (That's actually a ongoing labor of love, as I'm sure most COG members can relate to.

Long term goals:

. New flat color scheme in either tan or gray with my rank and name in military stenciling on the sidecovers
. Overflow tubes
. Powder coating the rims
. Doing something to secure the main fairing to the shortened pieces the pockets are made into. (Broken tabs prevent me from using a leftover bracket and/or normal fairing clips here....THERE WAS ALOT OF BROKEN TABS AND CRACKS WHEN I GOT HER HOME...)
. Some other side lights for the main fairing. Perhaps the front 1/4 panel lights like came on my 2003 VW GTI 1.8 Turbo...

Short term goals:

. Replacing the tires
. Changing the front brake pads
. Tailbrights stips to cover the Cycle Gear decals and the existing reflective material that doesn't work nearly as well.
. Possibly getting more Tailbrights material to cover a really bad paint job that's pealing off the saddlebags from when I bought it.

But, here she is as of now:

Holy crap, Alcan Rider, is that a Bat Signal you have on the front of that Connie?!! That must make riding at night a luxurious thing. Please do a post with that photo and talk about it a bit: i.e. what it is, why you bought it, how it works, what you would do differently (if anything). VERY, VERY interesting stuff!!

Short version:  I needed more light.

Longer version:  It all started when I got run over by a caribou.

Early spring of 2008, after riding from Glennallen through Wasilla, to meet up with riders from Anchorage and Fairbanks at Cantwell on the Parks Hwy, we found the Pizzeria where we had  intended to demolish a fair number of the round delights... was closed.  Apparently the owner decided he needed to take a drive to Anchorage.  The Anchorage riding contingent turned back south, to find sustenance en route home.  Those from Fairbanks, being only ~150 miles from homemade cooking, headed north.  Yers truly, being over 400 miles from home in either direction, found an open restaurant in Healy, a few miles north of the Denali Park entrance, and enjoyed dinner.  Appetite satisfied, it was time to head homeward as well.

The shortest route would have been south back to Cantwell then east across the 135 miles of the Denali Hwy... had it been open.  But winter snows restrict travel over that highway to the summer season, with a month or two in the spring and fall – weather permitting.  So it was north through the city on the Chena (Fairbanks) then east and south on the Richardson Hwy back to Glennallen.  Though it was spring and the days were getting longer, it would still get black dark for a few hours from around 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM.  Also, being spring, caribou migration was occurring, with pregnant cows leading the rest of the herds by a few weeks as they headed west to the calving grounds.

Through Fairbanks, on south on the Richardson Hwy through Isabel Pass (with weather very much like that found at Atigun Pass farther north) without mishap, and into the final leg.  About 35 miles from home, with the twilight turned almost to complete dark, I rounded a curve with the KLR's headlight doing its feeble best to guide me between the white fog lines on opposite sides of the black asphalt.  A quarter mile or so after the road straightened I spotted the dim shapes of three caribou milling around on the right hand edge of the pavement, appearing to hesitate before jumping across a small stream of meltwater, in itself strange due to caribou being  excellent swimmers, crossing many rivers in their migrations.  As the bike and I approached, the three seemed to become more agitated, dancing back and forth in apparent indecision.

As soon as the caribou were spotted, the brakes went on and I steered the bike to the center of the highway, a precaution in case there were more caribou on the left hand side, ready to dart out onto the highway.  Caribou are extremely unpredictable that way, and whatever move seems the most illogical is what they are likely to do.  By braking hard, I managed to stop the bike with the front tire no more than six inches from the leg of the nearest 'bou.  About that time the female the farthest to the right decided to exit stage left, bumping the middle one, which in turn pushed the left hand one into my bike, knocking it, along with me, over to the left, after which the three cows disappeared into the trees on that side.  A gurgling sound alerted me to the fact that the gas cap had popped off the tank with the impact, and I was going to have to push the bike the last few miles home if the situation wasn't corrected soon.

Fortunately, at that time of night, there was no other vehicular traffic within many miles in either direction so there was ample time to find the errant gas cap, reinstall it while there was still more than fumes in the tank, and upright the KLR.  After pushing it to the side of the highway it was checked over for damage and, finding none, started up.  The ride home was finished at a somewhat slower pace, with the rider being even more watchful ahead than usual.

While the inadequacy of the KLR's headlight had already been noted, this event provided the impetus necessary to remedy that weakness.  During the following summer a suitably stout bracket was fabricated and bolted onto the fairing stays.

The necessary wiring, with relays, switches, and connectors, was installed.  A few trials revealed that the turbulence from that huge lamp caused the windshield to flutter wildly, resulting in cracking around the mounting screw holes.  So guy wires were added to support the upper portion of the windshield against the effects of wind.  Once properly aimed, the project was obviously a worthwhile investment in time and money.  That single HID light provided more light far up the road than the two high beams of many more modern motorcycles, and with an amperage draw less than the single high beam of the stock headlight.

This particular driving light (Lightforce 240 HID) was chosen both for high lumen output per watt and the fact that the ballast is integral in the lamp housing, which means just two wires to the lamp and no external ballast to find room for.  That makes it possible to quickly swap the lamp between any two bikes that have both a suitable mounting bracket and the necessary wiring.  The latter was quickly installed on the Concours a couple of years ago, but it took a little trial and error to manage the former.  Just days prior to departure for the South 48 States in 2012, the new (and final) mount was finished.  In fact, the paint was still damp when I was doing preliminary adjustments to the light in the Yukon.  But once that was accomplished, the task was proven to be well worth the effort.  Nothing like being able to see well beyond your stopping distance at night, even at 80 mph (only where legal, of course!).

One problem arose that has me considering going to a somewhat smaller lamp.  The induced turbulence, noted above, becomes extremely severe at higher speeds.  Hitting an observed speed of 103 mph by GPS (closed course, professional rider, naturally) a loud snap was heard, and the upper right side of the windshield suddenly moved rearward about two inches, where it has remained to this day.  From that time on, maximum speed was held to just under 100 mph to prevent a similar fate befalling the lefthand side, with the rider attempting to ride with a windshield in his lap.

Now that Lightforce has made their 140 and 170 lamps available with HID's I am seriously considering purchasing a pair of 170's and mounting one on the Connie and the other on the KLR so I won't have to fight the turbulence problem.  Just have to figure somewhere worthwhile to use the 240 in order to justify the additional expense.  That 240 was over $600 from the lowest-priced vendor I was able to find so I can't just toss it.

Also, is that the special windshield rubber lip I see that is supposed to prevent buffeting? Please give your input on that as well.

That's the SAENG Stealth Edging (since replaced by something similar but with a different name) that has been on the lip of my windshield(s) for around ten years.  It allows me to cut the windshield height down to where I can easily see over it, while lifting the wind just enough to keep turbulence off my helmet.  The only downside (other than collecting insect carcasses) is that when riding in rain there is insufficient wind to keep my faceshield clear.  Putting my hand just above the top of the windshield to deflect some air down over the faceshield usually suffices, but that gets old when riding all day through rain.  The rest of the time I'm glad to have it there.

'99 Connie. I've had for about 18 months and ride every day since I don't own a cage any longer. ;D
Just put on a pair of Pirelli Sport Demons, awesome tires! Also added trunk and bags from Ridebikegear.com. Have driving lights and side marker lights so I'll be slapping those on soon. Best bike I've owned!

Was at a creamery yesterday getting the title signed on a recently acquired Vulcan 750.  Figured it was worth a snap with the creamery in the background:

This was taken somewhere on highway 6 in Nevada last week on the sunniest day of my journey last week--2100 mile round trip to San Francisco from Western Colorado

If you didn't already know it, these machines will run for at 100-110 MPH at around 7K+ RPM for 15-20 minutes at a time--numerous times a day--without complaining.

Taken during a short breather to get pictures of the Joshua tree forest I came across.

Sometimes the ride to work as it's benifits.  ;)
This picture was a ride along the coast of Cape Breton heading to work, added 30 mins but nice ride.

Today's ride to work was 2 hours longer, I need to try a different route.

The Media Gallery (http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php?action=media) is now open for any member, who has 10 or more posts, to create albums and upload pics. The requirement of 10 posts is to prevent spam. Any questions, please post them in the thread at: Post pics in the Gallery. (http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,47942.new.html#new)

This thread will now be un-stickied, as the Gallery will better serve the purpose of this thread.

Wow. Nice looking cafe racer, Martin.

I notice from your video that your rear wheel is only being held on by one side of the swing arm - just the four studs with the acorn bolts? Unless there is something I am missing from the video or something I don't understand, that looks like it could be dangerously weak.

Two things - Is that the MadStad? because I love it. And, are those the Michelin Road3's? Or Pilot3's, or whatever they're called? and how do you like them.

Yes, that is a Madstad and not to start a new debate but I am still on the fence. I think it is a great windscreen, but like putting 22's on a bubble top Impala, it is a matter of taste aesthetically You either love it or hate it. Yes Pilot Road 3's on 17" wheels. LOVE EM' ! That bike is actually a 06 with red body work from a 90.

Here you Go VT, real life angle of the windscreen. I love the fit and finish that my Givi with Laminar lip gives me, it almost rivals the Madstad. Yes I said it,  "almost". I may use it as my Touring screen.

Now there is an option - instead of installing the motor into the frame, install the frame onto the motor!
