C10 pipes polish
« on: August 19, 2019, 11:54:13 am »
Hello, My 1986 rear silver pipes need a good polish and have surface rust.  Any recommendations and methods to sand/polish?
Secondly, are the chrome pipe (covers) of the later models available for installation on my 1986?  Thanks in advance.

The entire muffle  has to be changed. The covers "are" the outside of the later mufflers, not slip overs.

Fine or extra fine steel wool and WD-40 will help the looks of your mufflers.

Ride safe, Ted

Thanks for the responses.  I wish I could slip on the later years Chrome 'covers'.  That would be cool for my 1986 Connie.

Buy a harbor freight bench style buffer and you can buff those out to appear pretty close to chrome.

Buy a harbor freight bench style buffer and you can buff those out to appear pretty close to chrome.

I got one of those a year or so ago, and they seem to work pretty well. They do get pretty warm during use, but they just seem to keep on trucking.

If you go the buffer route, I recommend picking up some extra buffing wheels and their polishing compound sticks to aid with the process.

One of the things I did too, was to turn some spacers to allow the over large holes in some of their wheels to fit the buffer's arbor(s) better. They give you some large metal washers to mount the wheels , but it is trial and error on the large hole versions until you get the wheel centered up so it turns without a lot of run out.

We just did a good cleaning and used polishing compound and they look great. I would be afraid that the steel wool would take a little more off than i wanted but it depends on how much rust.
