CONCOURS 1000 OR ST 1100?
« on: August 16, 2019, 05:15:12 am »
Im onlt 5'7 and Im wondering which bike is easier to handle at lower speeds.  My rides are mostly short back and forth to work,  One of COGers is selling both an st1100 and a concours 1000. Both are my price point. the st is 10 years older and 77k miles as opposed too 44k on the 1000.  Im leaning towards the Concours as it has really been a dream bike for years, but the st1100 is an aweful slick looking machine as well.  Any advice for which to get?

I was in the same boat when I went looking years ago, C10 or St 1100? I test rode both bikes and I liked both a lot. I ended up buying the C10 for really one reason, the excitement the C10 brought from romping the throttle was exhilarating, the roar of the motor was something I loved. The C10 is a reliable and fun machine that will bring years of good motorcycling if taken care of. The St 1100 was almost like driving a car, it had smooth linear power that didn't really make you think you were accelerating very quickly until you looked down at your speedometer. The St 1100 is sneaky fast, it didn't really have that roar of the engine that I liked at the time but man it would move. I believe the St is a little bit faster than the C10. Both bikes are good bikes but I've only owned the C10 (two of them). Good luck with whatever you decide, if I was in the same boat today trying to decide which one, this one would be in my garage

I don't think the ST is  faster than the concours, and the specs show it .5 seconds slower in 0-60 as well, and max HP is 100, compared to 110 before final drive of the concours.  Smoother yes,, I'm a Honda man at heart, but here https://bikeswiki.com/Honda_ST1100_Pan-European#Specifications it clearly states that the concours is faster right from the gate, and I know I have been over 130 on my Crysis  :-X, it was terrifying, every time I did it. Faring shakes all over , feels like its going to rip off and hit me in the face. One thing I know about Honda's though, they are very smooth, compared to my concours, but NOT faster, no way.
https://bikeswiki.com/Honda_ST1100_Pan-European#Specifications  compared with Kawasaki GZ 100 https://motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/kawasaki/kawasaki_gtr1000%2094.htm  Conny is built for acceleration for her time, and still gives the new 600 fuel injected sport bikes a run for their money up to about 100 mph,, then the full faring drag becomes too much at around 4th gear from what I have experienced recently on my 93 conny.  Crysis seems to hit 135 in 5th gear, and she's a 6 speed.  The gear ratio, I suspect makes up for toque in reality. And stripped, I bet a stock Conny can hit 150 in 6th gear if it did not have the huge faring drag.  But I have never stripped her, I like bug defense.

for low speed maneuverability and stop and go traffic the st is a better choice IMHO.  Better manners i feel than the c10 in those environments.

ST = more low end torque, more low end weight, better fit and finish.

Connie = more high end zip, more high up weight, easier to work on for DIYer.

COG = Come for the bike ... stay for the people ... means we want you either way.    GLWsearch.

Anyone near redwood city want to show me how not too hydrolock on first pump of the starter? So after about five years on cog I now have better reason to call it home.

Congratulations!! After you drive it home from Redwood City you may want to join us for a Meet and Greet in Springerville, Arizona! The Devil's Cut is on the Calendar for September 20-22. Riding the Devil's highway! Of course we can also do some local riding right here in SoCal when you come back from Redwood City too! Safe Travels!

That's the bike that's sitting in someone's brother's garage and needed to go.  I'd talk to the brother and see if he's been riding it at all or even started it from time to time.  Would be good to hear that it had some fuel stabilizer or a good dose of two stroke oil before it was parked.  It looks like a nice bike.  I posted a response to your question of things to do in the other thread you started.  Good luck!

I have ridden and owned both and these are my unscientific observations .....

1) the ST1100 is WAY smoother
2) the ST1100 is faster but you don’t really notice it when riding
3) maintenance is way more of a PIA on the ST1100
4) on stock bikes I say the ST1100 is more comfortable for me (6’2” and about 280)
5) the Concours FEELS like it’s more aggressive in its power delivery and it has a way better sound
6) Concours aftermarket support is fantastic (hello Murph)
7) with aftermarket doodads (raised bars, pegs loweres and possibly a replacement windshield) I find them to be equal in comfort

Granted, I have had only one ST1100 (‘95 or ‘96 I don’t recall and it was totaled less than a year after getting it .... soccer mom on her phone) and I have had 3 Concours (‘86, ‘96 and the current ‘04). I keep picking the Concours because I like it’s personality better. Just my 2 cents.

I think that the ST1100 leans more the toward touring side and the C-10 leans more toward the sport side of sport touring. I prefer the sportier side of sport touring and the C-10 thinks it's a Ninja. :great:
