Done or just cold (battery)
« on: January 12, 2018, 11:30:14 pm »
well got off work and its 31 out and try to start the bike with no joy, was at 9 volts and drop to 4 when trying to start. A few things I wondered, did I forget to turn off grip heaters( they turn off auto after two min , usually) has my heated gear just killed the battery this past 2 weeks, or was it just the cold?

When I bought the bike they had to charge the battery before it would start but that was a year ago and its been fine. I ride every day at least 68 miles so it gets charged a lot. I did have to throw it on the charger on Jan 1st after sitting for 9 days with out running while I was away for xmas but was fine it seemed until today. I rode last week and it sat in the parking lot all day in 15 degree weather and still started easy enough but still did struggle a little.

The volts are usually at 14.2 while riding even with full heated gear and the grips on but drops to 12.1 when I stop unless I keep it above 1000 rpm. I am kinda thinking the battery is just done so guess I will just go get a new one tomorrow, I think the cold did not help it any but like I said it was a lot colder last week. Still will try to start it in the morning and check voltage drop over night just to be sure there is not another issue.

The local shop has the YTX20 Yusa which is what I will prolly get for 129, but he also said a honda battery I think for 114......think I will stick with the Yusa those have always worked well for me.

Hi,
To my mind the way to do it is...

Charge the battery up and then have it load tested!

I have a NAPA battery in my Honda Element that just went "dead"! (10.5V)

I charged it up and load tested it and it is "GOOD" but borderline! (Barely in the GREEN)

No doubt a new battery is in my near future!!! ;D

hmmmmm, its been sitting for 4 hours and battery temp measure at 45 degrees on thermal and its at 11.93 volts after turning on grips and waiting for them to shut off on their own which they did. Bike starts too so now starting to think maybe it was just the cold?? will check voltage again in the morning.

" unless I keep it above 1000 rpm"??

Have always kept my idle tach speed at 1100 rpm. With SiSF's  carb spa I can take it down to 500 rpm and have "instant" revs but 1100 rpms makes me feel good I guess!!

it sit about 900 warm at idle.

Went ahead and pulled the battery and it seems to be out of fluid, and its only a 235 CCA so gonna go tomo=ow and get the YTX20H-BS  which is 310 CCA. I am planning a big trip this summer so was gonna get a new battery anyway.

I've been running a battery backup battery for about 9 months, per Revs suggestion in the below thread.  No issues!  It was worth a shot for a $35 AGM battery.

got it yesterday,  310 CCA , put it in and works great. The other battery was still working and holding 12 volts, it was in the bike when I rode to the shop to pick up the new one. Was 25 out and ran gloves jacket and heated grips plus charging my phone too and it started up and ran fine??? I really have no explination why it would not start on Friday other than my bike just wanted a new battery?
