Winterizing for Dummies

A reprieve is due towards the end of the week, but a few days of cool, blustery weather are reminding me here in southern Ontario that the time will likely come next month to take her off active duty. I have no choice but to store my bike outside although, once I have done winterizing chores, my plan is to build a frame and tarp around the bike to protect it from direct contact with the snow and rain.     Does anyone have links to a list (or can post advice) on what those basic winterizing chores should be. And I mean basic for someone neither mechanicically inclined nor interested. IOW, don't tell me to remove and drain that tank just tell me to use Stabil  ;)    Cheers,     Neil

  * Stabilize the fuel and be sure to run bike long enough to fill carbs with stabilized fuel. Be sure to leave fuel tank full.    * Change oil/filter    * Lube suspension    * Insert something into air box to block small rodent from nesting in there.    * Place plastic bags over exhaust tips (fastened with rubber bands) to prevent insect from entering.    * Connect battery tender. I would just add that I like to drain the carbs before I put the bike up otherwise the gas will evaporate leaving all kinds of nasty stuff behind. The only way I would leave the carbs full is if I was going to be able to start the bike every few weeks.  CT AAD  COG #7011-A  2003 Concours-Mary Ann  1995 Honda Nighthawk 750 wifes

When I winterize   I change the oil.  I stabilize the fuel then drain the gas from the carbs.  The battery stays in the bike with a battery tender attached to it.    One of the things I have never done is fog the cylinders because getting to the plugs are a B##ch.  Can you run the engine with the air filter taken out and spray the fog into the air box.  Would that accomplish the same thing?

 Well at least those of us that have a winter. You haven't lived until you have to take apart your carbs full of lacquer. :(

If you are going to the lengths to bag the exhaust cans to prevent moisture and/or critters from making their way upstream, don't forget the "tone holes" in the pipes.  Not sure if all models of the Concours had these, but the three iterations of the bike I owned did.  They vent out the bottom; simply run the bike at idle while on the c-stand and move your hand around under the pipe/muffler and you'll feel the pulses shooting down.  A piece of duct tape should suffice.    Not sure what temperatures are like in your neck of the Great White North, but having survived a couple of winters in Plattsburgh, NY (100 kM south of Montreal) I'm willing to bet there's some substantial cold.  You may want to remove the seat and store it inside to keep the vinyl from getting so cold it becomes brittle.  Couldn't hurt.    Finally, make sure your tarp has some way of venting out the top without letting in rain/snow.  If you use a fabric tarp that can breath, such as good ol' canvas or some of the new miracle weaves, no worries.  But plastic tarp, even when open at the bottm, makes a neat little greenhouse and condensation will form.  Then come spring you uncover a bike covered in gray peach fuzz.  Ewwww.  Since you are building a frame for the bike to put the tarp over, this shoud be easy using (again) duct tape, a length of dryer vent hose and some imagination.  The Original Rich Reed  COG #7  1986 Kawasaki Ninja 1000R  1977 Yamaha XS650 Standard  2004 Little Blue Chevy  "Over the hill it's five bucks.  Here in Idaho it's a hundred and eighty."
