Help!!! C10 is roasting me!!
« on: June 04, 2018, 12:26:48 am »
Hey All.
I took my first trip on my NTM 2006 C10 this past weekend.
Red Mile Flat Track Race in Lexington KY.

I liked the bike....  good ride, stability, wind protection etc etc.

BUT. That darn thing nearly roasted me!!!!!!
Even at speed, I had to spay my knees out like spider man to get some cool air.
All the fairings / heat panels / gaskets appear to be in place.
The coolant level is good full, the coolant "looks" fresh( its' nice and green anyway).
The Thermostat stays at 1/4, got up to 1/2 in traffic when the cooling fan kicked on

Is this level heat on my legs and torso normal, or am I missing something?

Thanks

See my avatar.

Do you have the side air scoops on and turned the right direction?
Some folks still have the winter fairing extenders mounted like I do.
That can deflect air from hitting your legs.

I am curious where you feel the heat?  I feel it on my right leg on the shin.  It's really bad once the air temp gets up around 90.
I am using the coolant cocktail.

Yep - my 2006 got me quite warm in warm weather but it was only really bad if I was in slow traffic.  I think many here know this as a Connie fact of life.  Wear good gear and stay hydrated.  I'm always gone all summer and did most of my Connie riding during cooler times of the year, when the heat from the bike was welcome.
My Connie followed me home after the test ride...

Bob;

What sort of gear were you wearing???

How warm was the ambient temperature that day??

I found I was less "hot" when wearing my Aerostich because it insulated me from the very hot air blowing my way from the exhaust pipes and radiator. One time I opened the zippers on the legs of my Aerostich on a very hot day for ventilation and found it was not helpful.

Sounds normal.  I'm planning to remove the lower fairings (as some here have) at least for the summer then re-install for winter.

Like this, although you will want to relocate your anti freeze over-flow bottle to under the seat or somewhere else.
Here's a thread on the process:

LOL.... Love the avatar.
I'm not sure... I don't have anything on the bike except the " faring extenders" / scoops that come on with the bike
and are mounted at the bottom of the faring...
I have the "wide" side facing forward, I assumed this would pull cool air towards me.
I'll take a picture and put it on here.
         Thanks!!

Thanks!  Great suggestions. I will definitely do the cocktail and prolly then those shields.
The windshield is a little more than I want to spend for now... I'm retire ( broke )

Thanks for your response.
I feel it on both legs ( calves and thighs ), crotch and lower abdomen.
It was low 80's, and I had to remove my big / heavy Harley leather coat and go shirt only.
Even then I was still roasting!

I was looking at my bike today... the faring / heat ducts are there, but they don't fit real tight.
The bike was wrecked / has a salvage title.
I'll try adjusting them, add  the coctail and additional heat shields..
If that doesn't work, I'm leaning towards  just removing the lower and mid and going "half naked"
Some of the guys sent pictures of this... it doesn't look bad.
Cheers

The ambient was mid 80s.
I was wearing Jeans with my old Harley leather coat, had to shed the coat.

Thanks! / Cheers

Wow.
Very interesting.
Those guys put a lot of thought and work into these things.
I might try this. I have the tip over bars, and the $ investment is cheap.
Thanks!

Sounds like you got it correct. Had to ask.

 #1 Do the heat shields!
#2 make sure the seal/plastic on top of the radiator is snapped in place.

Hello Bob:

The old ZG1000 just runs hot it's a hot bike mine runs around half naked and she's still hot.

Just stay hydrated a modern jacket would help also.

I installed a set of Baker airwings.  Open they help keep the shins and feet a little cooler and closed helps keep them a little warmer.  Though it helps I still ALWAYS wear boots to keep the warm/hot air from hitting my shins in the summer.

i had one of the last c10s ont eh planet that hadnt had the bafflectomy done on stock pipes.

ive done this & it helps keep mine cool:

baffle ectomy (did this the other day, it did surprisingly seem to make a diffference)
correct stock wings aimed right way (big end fwd)
relocated coolant tank to behind RH sidecover with aluminum overflow canister
blocked off air 'injection' system
richer on pilot screw settings
modern spal, way more efficient fan. doesnt have to run nearly as long to cool temp in radiator cause the stock fan, well, sucks.

also fit a cee baily windshield with gl1800 vent for airflow.

Do you have any info on the Spal fan you used? I had to trim about 3/16" off of the tips of 2 opposing blades that were melted. It still seems tp work fine but I would like to upgrade it.

Is the seal/plastic that sets just in front of the valve cover in place?
Many remove it when doing a valve job.
If removed, more hot air blows back over the engine...

yup. here:
http://forum.cog-online.org/concours-c10-zg1000-general-chat-and-tech/spal-fan-or-source-for-muzzy-fan/msg611211/#msg611211

i also made 2 small heat shields for the 2 inner header tubes, they made a huge difference as well keeping the heat off the fan. not sure if i have pics of that, but just some thin aluminum about 1/4" off the header where its closest to the fan, held on with metal zip ties.
