Help with Ninja ZX900 Instrument Cluster
« on: May 27, 2019, 08:54:35 pm »
I purchased a ZX900 Cluster, which should work on the C10 but I am having some issues:

1. No tachometer response
2. Kickstand warning stays on but turns off when high beam on
3. No High Beam light on dash, but instead if turns off the stand warning, see above.

Any feedback regarding any of these issues would be great!

I assume you have a good color coded wiring diagram for both bikes? Colors will vary. Tach is probably driven from different sources so will not be compatible. What year ZX-9 (R)? and C-10?
2013 ZG-1400, 2005 ZX-10R (Nekkid), 2012 TW-200, 1999 TW-200....and more to come.

Hmm.. I thought this would be more straight forward.... 84 ZX900 & 1999 C10.

What year Ninja is that cluster from?
Is it a "backless/open back" or an "enclosed back" cluster?

if it's the open back unit (fully naked backside), I can't say if it differed from mine...
I installed the "closed back style" that has the "mounting hole bracket" at the bottom of the cluster, onto my '88 C10 with no issue other than the wire on the "bike side" that goes to the clock, needs to be clipped and tied off... it ends up throwing something off as it ties to that kickstand down light on thee cluster...when doing a "plug and play"... nothing els gave me an issue, really, I did have an intermittent "tach" issue, but traced that to a deteriorated ground wire that attaches at the l/h coil bracket, the blk/yel with ring lug.. everything else worked fine,(including the voltmeter function/tach button...and the speedo even worked perfectly.. so you may have a faulty "pod" there, from e-bay, or some other issue..

i had to go search, as I couldn't recall every step, it's been like 12+ years abck from my build, and I may have erred, and it should be a GPZ900 cluster, I'm still searching for the links I gave for someone to search down...
anyway, this is quoted from what I told him about the wires....;
"if you mean can you use the Ninja gages as they are, answer is yes...but as I say, you will need to pull the white/yellow wire from the conni side connector (the big one with 8 wires) that connects to the gage harness, or snip the white (I think) wire on the Ninja gage side of the connector that mates to the existing conni one.  the rest is plug and play.
 you didn't mention what year Conni, if it is a pre 94, the Conni's emergency lighting (headlight)circuit will still function, just letting you know."
I'll go look at mine, it's buried... so give me a while.
