You can slit the bellows and sneak in a wrench to tighten a nut. If I remember correctly, you have to remove a plastic cover from said nut and throw it away.

Sounds correct to me.
After you tighten the nut, reseal the bellows by gluing the cut with superglue.

Or, you can remove the mirror from the bike, move the rubber bellows out of the way and tighten the bolt, which is what I did.

I didn't want to slit the bellows, but it does mean taking  the windshield and inner faring off.

Slit the bellows and if you feel you need to, crazy glue the bellows back together.

Where do you make the slit counting the accordion folds from the mirror backwards to the connecting arm? Don't want to make multiple slits or make it bigger.

Cut it on the back side at the middle of the accordion folds.
Cut an inner fold, not an outer, and it makes the cut repair less evident..

NOTE: mgoodrich said you can remove the mirror and access by moving the bellows.
I wasn't able to do that, but it might be a viable option.
          Maybe he can explain more??

After the mirror assembly is off, remove the nut that attaches the movable part of the mirror to the section that is screwed onto the faring.  Once that section is off you can get to the nut that will tighten that pivot section up.

There used to be a thread that had both ways done (slit bellows or remove mirror) with pictures.  That might have been on the other cog website, and probably lost by now.

You can remove the mirror from the fairing fairly easily.  With it off you can make the slit on the base where it doesn't show and doesn't need to be glued or sealed.
Here's how I cut mine.  Yes, the cut is longer than needed but it gives you access to the nut.  YMMV

If you were going to cut it anyway why bother removing the mirror? Why not cut it while it is on?!? This seems redundant and unnecessary.

He cut the end where it can not be seen. Mirror has to be removed.
Others are talking about cutting at the folds. Mirror left in place.

I'm glad kkja13 posted that picture, that is where I go through.

The unusual thing though that the rubber on my mirror doesn't enclose the bolt, it was only wrapped around the outer edge going down about a 1/4 inch, so I didn't have to slit anything on that end.  I had assumed that they were all the same, I can see that is not the case.

OK thanks. I see the reasoning now. But I don't think a small slit in the inner accordion fold would show unless one is looking for the slit very closely.

I believe it is the 4th peak of the accordion bellow from the fairing end. I can confirm when I get home.

I cut the bellows on mine along the bottom seams around 2003 or 2004.

Never bothered to glue them back up - never saw the need.  They looked the same as before, and have worked fine ever since.

Bonus:  I've needed to re-tighten them a couple more times along the way and didn't have to re-cut.

THIS!!  Have performed the same around 2004 or 2005.  Not problems since.

Correction, just checked , 4th pleat from the mirror end, not counting the bellow mounted to the mirror. Looking at the mirror from riders point of view the pleats make a "W" I cut it in the middle of the w, high point. About a half to 3/4 inch long slit.

great description. Any pics? That would rest this once and for all and help us from making unnecessary cuts.

Here is a pic of the tweezer in the slit of the 4th pleat from mirror. Hard to get a definitive count on the pleat, again the slit is at the middle top of the "W". I don't think the 3rd or 5th pleat would matter much to get to the nut.
Got another pic showing inside but even though it was taken with the same phone camera file size was too big to post. I'll try to post again at work.

Thank you for that. :You_Rock_Emoticon:

Are your tweezers touching the nut? I always thought the nut was on the back not the bottom. You see what I mean by unnecessary cuts.

Bob, it appears you cut your (below the nut)
I cut mine to the rear of the mirror. (sideways to the nut)
Both ways will work. Yours allows a socket, mine allows a wrench.

As Ted said mine slit is below the nut. All you need is to remove the cap on the head and it can be reached by a deep socket. I will confirm size.
