Title: I bought it. I have two 99 concours. Broken highway peg?
Post by: The ice man on March 20, 2019, 04:06:31 am
The new connie that I bought has one highway peg on the right side.  The left side is broken off in the fairing bracket.. these highway pegs just go straight out, he cut holes in the fairing for them. The lower fairing bracket is bolted to the engine in two places, he just took out the bolts and screwed in the highway pegs.  The left highway peg broke off  when he crashed. I drilled a hole ,with a left hand drill bit,  and attempted to use a a screw extractor to remove the bolt part of the highway peg. The screw extractor broke off.#.$ !,!..$..&.?.!..#.$.?.. =. . I would like to remove the lower fairing bracket from the bike.  I Think I can remove the fairing bracket even with the broken off highway peg in it..? After the bracket is removed I believe I can remove the bolt with vise grips or a pipe wrench. I would welcome any suggestions?

I asked the previous owner for the broken left side highway peg, but he could not find it.

Harbor freight has motorcycle lift for $89.99 #61632 I can get 20% off with coupon. I don't have a concrete floor to work on, I am outside with dirt floor. I think I could slide the lift under the bike and use it in the dirt to Make it easier to work on the bikes? Maybe?

I think would need to remove the radiator to remove the bracket. I don't know if I would have to remove the oil cooler?.?

I used a 5/32 drill bit and I think a #3 screw extractor. The screw extractor broke off  approximately flush with the end of bolt. I don't think I can remove the broken off screw extractor? Even if I could remove it, I am not sure it would help?

I'm not sure how to tell you to proceed. But there maybe locktight on those threads. A little heat will make it come out easier. be care with heat around the radiator hose. Good luck.

mig tack weld a nut (through the hole) onto the extractor carefully, then back that whole mess out.

That was my thought.  I just didn't know if you could weld to the extractor.  I'm guessing that he doesn't have a welder though.  I think the easiest for him is just pull the radiator and remove the bracket.  Time consuming but not hard.  It would give him an opportunity to give the radiator a good cleaning and maybe get a look at things that are hard to see with all of that on.

I think I can remove the bracket? Anyone who has removed the radiator, would have a better understanding of if this is possible?  I would like to hear from someone who has removed the radiator?

I replaced my bracket last year sometime because it was bent.  If you pull the radiator, the bracket will come off.

I took the radiator off. Tried to remove the bracket. I have to move bracket to right about 1 inch so the bolt will clear the block. I can't do that because the bracket hits the exhaust manifold. I can move the bracket only about 3/8 inch to the right. #$×$+/$=?

If you're going to replace the bracket, cut the bracket so it will come off.  Maybe take a ratchet strap and wrap around the bracket and try to collapse the bracket.  If trying to save the bracket, maybe some vice grips to remove the peg stud after it's moved over?  If it's me, I'll buy a bracket and do what I have to do to get the old one off.  I guess you could pull the exhaust to get it out of the way if you don't like the other options.  If you went that far, there are those that would suggest you replace the o-rings in the front coolant log while you have access.

If I could remove the screw extractor then I could drill out about 5/8 inch of the stud then I could get it out. It is beginning to look cutting bracket and removing the bracket in pieces may work.

In some places it is easy to cut the bracket, but close to the stud is not so easy and that is where I need to cut it,to allow the bracket to clear the exhaust manifold and the inner radiator pipe. I wonder what I have to do to remove the inner radiator pipe?

Now I have one highway peg ,but two highway pegs would be better ? I can't find the type of highway peg I have ? I am not really sure I want to have highway pegs like this.  This time I was lucky that I could remove the broken off part of the highway peg.

If did this again, I think I would  use a # 4 screw extractor and 1/4  inch left hand drill bit. Or just drill the stud out of the block and remove the bracket, even if you cant totally drill out the stud that is ok because it will be weakened enough to break the stud when you pull the bracket out. In my case the stud broke with only a 5/32 hole in it. However the stud seemed to me to be made of weak aluminum alloy other types of metal may not have the same characteristics. Fortunately I drilled the hole all the way through the block before I broke off the screw extractor. I was dumb and lucky. Next time I will not apply enough torque to break the screw extractor, back the screw extractor out before it breaks and drill the stud out.  :beerchug.

been following this on the sideline..
 :truce:

glad you got it sorted.... :great: :great: :beerchug:
when drilling out broken fasteners, always start with a small drill, right down the center of the broken fastener, then use progressively larger drill bits untill you are "almost" to the thinest cross section of the threads on the fastener that napped off... then use the largest
"E-Z Out" or remover, that will fit in the hole... never try to remove a broken bolt using an "E-Z Out" that is smaller than "half" the diameter of the bolt... drill bigger, use bigger tool...

I wouldn't want those pegs either, do away with that type... they always break stuff on a drop or crash...  worst ones break or crack the engine cases... ouch... >:(
