is my petcock leaking?
« on: July 31, 2017, 07:21:35 pm »
I went to clean my air filter last night and the gasket on the filter fell off and is stretched with some fluid idk if its something the previous owner sprayed in there or if it could potentially be gasoline, having no sense of smell doesnt help. I also thought maybe it would be a good idea to turn the petcock off and when i touched the lever gas seeped out of where the lever mates with the petcock. a new filter is on the way and im wondering if i should have thrown an aftermarket petcock in my cart afraid to use my bike now.

Get a new OEM petcock from Murph

https://www.murphskits.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_94&products_id=140

Pull the tank and then spray compressed air in the plug wells to clear any debris.  Pull the plugs and cover the holes with a towel.  Might want to pull the power to the coils and turn the engine over to see if gas comes shooting out the spark plug holes.  Don't get within range of any gas that may come out.

You need a new OEM petcock which comes with the all important new screen filter. You dont get that screen filter (and you need it) with aftermarket manual petcocks or repair kits.

Replace the air  filter with the OEM filter. Dont get a K&N or BMC-  I  had those and they dont fit  as good as stock. My gasket fell off the K&N too.

Read up  on  hydrolock and  think about getting overflow tubes if you dont have them already.

Here is the link to Steve's videos.  There is one about hydrolock.  My advise is to watch every video he has posted.  You will be more educated about C10's after watching.

Hope that helps.  :beerchug:

thanks for the replies, ya i binge watched steves videos before i bought the bike lol. do you think the K&L rebuild kit on murphs is worth it? they dont seem to specify if it comes with a new screen or not and i remember seeing complaints about o rings being a poor fit but im not sure if it was about that kit.

Lots of us have used Murph's kit. If there was the slightest thing
wrong with it I am sure he would fix it. Call him if you have to,
he is really good about working with the COG. Joint the club.
