Main fuse (30 amp) keeps blowing
« on: July 31, 2017, 03:51:33 pm »
My 1988 Concours was running fine and suddenly shut down.
I checked the fuses and found the 30 amp fuse blown.
Replaced the fuse and as soon as I turn the ignition on it blows.
I have been going through the schematics and checked the alternator and junction box.
I removed all fuses from the J-box except the 30 Amp and it still blows.
I noticed in the schematics when you engage the kill switch it sends power to the igniter and coils.
I tested this by turning the kill switch off, putting the fuse in, turn the ignition on - fuse does not blow.
Put kill switch in run mode and the fuse blows.

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot the igniter?

Grab an meter and have at it....  It sounds like you're searching for a hard short so any meter should work fine.

For a quick test, repeat your test of using the kill switch, but disconnect the igniter first.

NOTE: If it doesn't blow it does not completely identify the igniter as the culprit.
(Because the igniter is inline with other electrical components).
BUT, if it does blow,,,, it rules out the igniter.

Thanks for the suggestion connie_rider.
I tested without the igniter connected and it still popped.
Which lead me to the coils.
I found the positive lead from the right side coil was rubbing against the frame and shorted out.

Thanks for the help connie_rider and Jim.

Yowza! Close the garage, turn off the light next time during troubleshooting. I would assume that was a decent size spark!?

I wonder why the 10 amp ignition fuse did not blow.

RWulf;
Looking at the schematic in my Clymer manual it appears that when you turn the key on it connects the fused 30 amp circuit to the kill switch which connects directly to the coils and igniter.
It seems the fuse in the Ignition circuit is used to protect the other igniter circuitry.

The 30 amp fuse supplies main power to the J-Box, and the kill switch (BR/W wire from J-Box) is powered through the 10 amp Ignition Fuse.

Just a heads up:  After looking at the condensed schematic that was floating around this site (was it from the Clymers manual???), I noticed it's depiction of the J-Box does not match the Maw Kaw schematics.  The condensed schematic shows the plus side of the battery is connected directly to the common lead on the J-Box main relay (W/R wire).  No fuse!  The shop manual shows the battery power goes through the 30 amp fuse before it goes to the common side of the main relay, which would make sense.  See attached.
