Another "what's that part" question....
« on: May 09, 2016, 01:05:38 pm »
So over the past weekend, I flush/filled/bled front & back brakes, and clutch. All went well. So I put the Connie back in it's natural garage stall.  This morning I noticed that a broken bolt/nut laying on the ground under the bike.

I'm trying to figure out if this is a recent event, or just perhaps a broken bolt that was replaced by the PO, and the lost broken piece just finally found its way from some little hidey hole in the engine compartment, and on to my garage floor.

I'm thinking maybe a motor mount bolt? I haven't had the tank or plastics off yet, so I'm just guessing.  I rode into work this morning, and nothing seems amiss, vibration-wise. But it doesn't have that flange on the nut, so I'm thinking maybe not.

Hoping for a few possibilities to narrow down my search.  I'm headed off to the Dragon next week and want to make sure I'm ready.

Thanx!

I'm going to say one of the rear motor bolts.  Look on the left side near the gear shifter and see if you can spot the broken end of the bolt.  Mark

That is a locknut, and the only place I remember those being used is on the shock mount, both top and bottom.

Edit--Looked through the parts fiche and the rear motor mounts use lock nuts as well.

The motor mount nuts are 10mm, and the shocks use 12mm.  Put a socket on it and that should tell you which one it is.

I'll go with "Broken motor mount bolt for $1000, Alex!"

ETA: by the looks of the 'other end' of it, it's fresh. No rust and bright steel.
Check it out, pretty sure it's yours and not the PO's unless you've never ridden in rain before.

Bingo. Right where Sparkie indicated.  Spotted it right away. And corresponds to exactly where I found the nut.

Good eyes/sleuthing gentlemen. Much appreciated.

Looks like I can just drive it out from the broken side. Looks like a clear shot. Hopefully it's not under tension when up on the stand.

One last thing....I think I have it ID'd correctly as 92153-0444 BOLT,FLANGED,10X215 (formerly 92002C).

Did I get that right?  Thanx!

Looks like you got it correct.  You might try your local hardware or fastener store for that 10mm bolt.  I don't think the Kaw quality is very good for those bolts.  They all seem to break commonly.  If you could replace it with the best grade possible, it might be an improvement.  Mark

I did. Got a hardened bolt at a local fastener supply shop. Wish all repairs were this easy.
