Oil cooler leak....need some advice.
« on: August 16, 2012, 01:46:42 am »
Hi guys.  I am working on a 1986 ZX900A3 project with my son.  I have come to believe the fitting on the oil cooler is cracked...or the cooler itself is leaking.  I used to have a C10 (now a C14) and from what I can tell in my old C10 manual it sure looks like the oil coolers between the GPZ and the C10 are the same.

So my question...has anyone had any experience with a leaking oil cooler and if so...can you provide me any ideas on a repair.  I was wondering if a radiator repair shop could test and repair it....?  Would rather not invest in a new one if I can avoid it.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I have had experience with a leaking cooler, and the least expensive fix is to source a used on from another bike. Check the for sale section or ebay - HTH, Steve

Thanks for the suggestion Steve.  You are right, a good used one would be a great option but as you know.....when buying used I would run the risk of getting another one that has a leak.  I may need to go that direction but am holding out hope that someone has had experience or better....success in repairing one and how that was accomplished.

I found a radiator shop in the area and will give them a call to see what they think.  However, if anyone has additional ideas or suggestions I would appreciate them.

The built in bolt the oil lines screw into on mine was cracked.  The previous owner tried to seal it, but it still leaked.  I bought one off ebay for $20 or so.  Probly cheaper than a repair, if it could even be welded.  Most ebay dealers only sell functioning parts.  I have had good exp w all my ebay purchases for my 98.

Thanks Miles.

I think that is what happened to the one on our GPZ.  I suspect the previous owner tried tightening the bolt on the line a little too much and cracked the fitting on the bottom of the cooler.  When we bought the bike (Craigslist project) it had been sitting for about 7yrs and the line and fairing belly pan were wet with oil.  After cleaning it back up and doing a bunch of maintenance on the bike we got it started but found that line was leaking right where it went into the cooler.  A little extra torque resulted in a worse leak and after some research found that the cooler/fitting was not terribly tolerant of over tightening.

I will check part numbers tonight to see if the coolers between the GPZ and C10 are the same and post a Want To Buy in the emporium section and hope another member has one available.  I will also look on e-bay as you and Steve suggested.

Thanks again!
