Oil leak - common or problem?
« on: September 11, 2017, 02:56:20 pm »
I've noticed that when my bike gets hot, it seems to leak a few drops of oil (I think it's oil).  The leak position is what has me stimmied.  If you draw and imaginary line between the oil fill cap (top) and the oil level window (bottom), then move up 2" from the bottom and then to the right 2", their is some sort of round \ square cap (I think it's part of the clutch).  Anyway, it leaks from under there.  I'm thinking a new gasket but though it best to ask what's under that cap first.   ;D

A slow leak is pretty hard to find sometimes...

Could be that one of the seals (shifter shaft, balancer shaft) is leaking, or possibly the water pump.
Lots of other possibilities too.

As said, I too vote for oil pump seal going bad.  This is the case if the oil seems to be around the left side, or if you see a lot of oil collecting under the the engine. Pretty common and fixed with a new water pump.

The seal can be changed if the pump is still good and not leaking coolant . Those seals pop out sometimes and leak . Some red loctite on the new one will prevent it .

If it is the water pump it should be pretty obvious to the OP.

Look on bikebandit at the oem parts for the, wheel tires final drive, front bevel gear. It has both the oil service cap and the oil gauge on it. Is the square cover with the o- ring where the leak is?

Another thing in that area that can leak is the neutral sensor.

Mine had leaked since the day I got it with 13,500 miles on it.  I changed or checked everything in that area and would always end up with a small oil leak.

This spring I decided to really give it a good cleaning and got the whole area very clean.  I started the bike and let it run for a while and after it sat for a while I found one drop of oil under the bike.  I traced the drip to the neutral sensor.  $6.35 (plus shipping) and a little time to swap it out and I haven't had a drop of oil under the bike since.

Sounds like you are talking about the bearing cap, a small leak underneath there.

There is the o-ring in that link if that is the place.
