Coolant puke
« on: October 14, 2017, 04:12:11 pm »
After my last few rides ( maybe ten/ fifteen miles, two rides), when I park the bike, it starts puking coolant from the overflow tube. Could I have put too much in? It's an 03.

You cannot overfill unless you...

Did you fill the overflow tank to the brim? There are markings on it.

I'm thinking I may have. I didn't notice the makings until after I filled it  :-[

I don't recall seeing "markings on the tank"...
With the OEM tank in position, and the front bottom cover plastic installed, the "level" is determined by being visible thru the sloted cutout on the lower surface of the cover... but, on 90% of the bikes I've seen, age, and discoleration of the tank make this difficult, even when shining a flashlight beam into the open filler on that tank..
The ""easy" inspection for level is stick a finger into / thru the filler hole, it should just touch the fluid, with the finger tip..
Any more than that is over filled... if the fluid is overfilled, stop at the Dollar store for a cheapo plastic turkey bashed, and stick a pice of rubber hose on it, and suck the excess out...
If the level was correct, and its still puking out the overflow from the tank... might as well have the radiator pressure cap tested at a parts store, or simply replace it..... suitable replacements are listed in the parts sticky at the top of this section for parts...
If it still pukes with a new cap, and you notice its not sucking fluids back into the radiator during the cooling process, then its time to replace the big sealing o ring that seals the top and bottom halves of the thermostat housing which contains the thermo... those are a common issue, and turn to chewing gum...when it happens, the vacume on the radiator during cooling is not sufficient to pull the fluid back in, as air is sucked in thru that housing o ring.

So I checked my reservoir, and it's a tad high. I did notice that it has stopped puking coolant. When I originally filled it, it was on the kickstand and I never saw any markings. I'm guessing it has fixed my mess! As for the orings, I've replaced them all!

Mine has an upper line with a "U" on it. But the finger test is good.

I'll have to remember this! I'm planning on changing out my coolant for Steve's coolant cocktail. Don't wanna get carried away filling the reservoir up again!
