Pic of the old gasket overlaid on top of a new metal gasket.
Replacing the old POS paper gasket was a bit of a PITA but I'm glad to git 'er done  :)

Good question! I'm not sure. The drained oil was very clean and I didn't find any debris in the assy. I suspect some seeped out with the oil leak.

I think Rich was saying that it was a pretty good possibility that the rest of the gasket is on the part you removed.

How does THAT happen?  Seems like it would take a fair amount of force to get the fork in that position.

No sure, the drive bevel came off and went back together fairly easy (nothing seemed to get hung up). And took her out yesterday for a couple hour ride and didn't have issues (shifts fine, no unusual noises, etc.). I just bought the bike about a month ago so I'm not sure of the previous PO had any issues....

Well, it's a pretty safe bet that MOB pointed that out because it's not supposed to be that way.  What a bummer that it's all back together without that being addressed.  Best of luck.

I looked at my orig hi-res photo and don't see any damage to the gear positioning lever. I think it's camera angle thing happening that makes it look offset (if that's what MOB is saying). Anyway, I took another 60 mile ride today and the bike is running smoother than ever. Best part: NO MORE OIL LEAK :)

Next project will be either 2MM & torque cam socket or upgrade the suspensions....

I'm sorry, I was not remembering there was a "notch" on that neutral indicator switch wheel... my bad...
The picture threw me when I saw it, and just was being "overly careful" mentioning it...

it's good, as seen below... easy to confuse when glanced at from an angle...
