This things hot! It burned my leg!
« on: November 05, 2017, 01:00:41 am »
I've got 500 miles or so on my new to me c10. Riding home in 85 deg weather the heat coming off the left side of the engine burned my chin pretty good. I don't know degrees of burns but it hurt like heck and was red for a while. I have the GTR fairings on the bike. First time this has happened. I was wearing ankle length socks though. So I'm going to try regular socks tomorrow on my  ride I've got planned. I plan on making some of those pressure shadow flaps seen on a recent thread here as I live in Dallas and it's always hot!  I'm assuming this is common on this bike?

It is warm but not that hot to burn like that. At least not mine.

Where is your temp needle while riding?

Normally about 1/3 from the left.  Sitting in rush hour maybe 1/2

This may be a dumb question, but seeing as you mentioned your socks...
I have to ask.... were you wearing shorts, or jeans????

As I have always worn protective pants, like an AeroStich 2 piece Roadcrafter, and shin high motorcycle boots, I don't think I've ever felt my legs being hot, let alone any "burn"....

Yep - I rode my '06 with shorts just once on a warm day.  The insides of my calves were redder from the heat of the engine than the outside were from the sun.  Never again.  I don't always wear my Fieldsheer riding pants but I always at least wear long pants.  Connie can cook and will!

My gear= aerostich Darien jacket and Olympia gortex type riding pants and red back high top boots. I'm a firm believer in ATGATT!!   These particular socks are on the short side. I'm wearing full length socks on the ride later today fo' sho'! 👍

Ok. Then this is abnormal. You should not be feeling that much heat let alone getting burned. Maybe your deflectors are missing. I have ridden wearing shorts and the only time I feel heat is when I am stuck in traffic and the fan is blowing. Other than that it's fine.

The deflectors are off and I have the full length gtr fairings on   The cooling fan did blow hot air when it was on  I think it was a high pants/bare skin situation. Thanks for the inputs

You were wearing high top boots and riding pants yet still had skin showing?

Lol the " whistle britches" as I call them are scrunched up with the stock footpeg setup (knees bent) it just so happened some of the scculent and dainty skin was exposed. Just ride 100 miles with no issue with regular socks.  Same temps too I dunno what to say.  Heat deflecting flaps will be fabricated this week

I burnt the crap out of right my inner calf riding in shorts.  I had to swing it back home after 3 miles.  I've got about 1200 miles logged in the seat on my 03 and I'm up in the air about keeping it.  WHY?  Glad you a asked - the heat from the engine.  Would love t hear how the negative flaps work out.  I've been thinking about mococking up a set out of cardboard and duckie just to see if it works.  Keep us posted.  :great:

If you learn one thing riding a C-10, you don't wear shorts.

I've been running with the "pressure shadow flaps" you mentioned for over 10K miles.  They've been working great.  Reduces the heat in the summer and provides a little extra wind/rain protection on colder days, especially if you block off the vents at your feet.

Yes.  I used to run with them off, too, but once I put the flaps on I now get cool air on my feet.  I've got some foam blocks I put in the scoops to protect from cold air and rain so now I'm leaving them on year round.  The flaps do a good job of keeping the blast of air off your shins.  Road about 200 miles yesterday in misty/light rain and 48 degree temps.  Tips of my shoes were damp but my legs stayed dry and comfortable wearing jeans and mesh riding pants.
