Wheel coupling to rear drive spline alignment
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:31:51 am »
Clymer's says nothing, but I read in a tech page that to avoid any wheel coupling to final drive spline alignment issues I should loosen the four bolts that secure the rear drive, tighten the axle down, then resecure the bolts that connect the final drive?  How neccessary is this step because I don't want to mess with that rear drive if I dont have to.  Do the odds suggest my spline alignment will be off if I do not do this?  I don't really see why I can't just put the wheel on the way I took it off and have everything fit the way it did before.

It's actually a bit easier to get the wheel off when the final drive is loose but I just replaced my rear tire without loosing those four nuts.
As long as the axle slides through easily how much misalignment cold there possibly be?

My thinking is that if I were to loosen the rear drive to line up with the wheel, wouldn't that in turn change the pinion to pinion shaft alignment then?
Then again, if I were to take out the rear drive I could then lubricate that pinion gear with moly 60......hmmmmm.

Never mind, I realize that there is no alignment from the pinion to the coupling or pinion shaft.  Any aligning at that end is taken up by the adjustability of the driveshaft U joint.  Answered my own question.....cool huh? :)
