Wow, what a week
« on: June 25, 2018, 09:24:04 pm »
After changing the oil and replacing the water pump oil seal I take my Connie to work. It was running like crap. I was coming up the freeway when the temperature spiked and then dropped to cold. I limped my way home to find the coolant hose to the pump split in half. No sooner did I get that repaired than the next day it starts overheating. Oh boy, the thermostat was shot, replaced with a 83 accord, fill and bleed and finally get her back up and running. Also discovered that my number 4 carb had a stuck float, no fuel. Got that situated and now she runs like a top! She fell over in the garage, hit the shelf and split my windshield. Now I’m running with a very short shield (just cut it down). She’s been a pain for sure but man is she fun to ride. I’ll keep the smaller shield for the summer. Wow! What a week!  :-\

Wow....Good job dealing with a supersized load of fertilizer this week.

The fact that you didn't grab a sledgehammer and finish the bike off has me even more impressed.  :great:

I definitely am VTconnie! I already did the 17” rear wheel swap and put a 03 Yamaha R1 front end on her (I had a custom stem). I took her up Mulholland drive yesterday for some canyon action. Wow! So much fun, although I was dragging pegs and feet. Still, she’s one fun ride.

Definitely get some pics of this thing up. I have a ZRX1100 front end, wonderful upgrade for the Concours.

It’s a little after the fact, but...since you had one cooling system component fail (hose) odds are the other rubber components in that system are at their End-of-life too.

I’d consider replacing everything in the cooling system - you already have it open for one item, may as well do the rest and not risk another break leaving you on the road.

Plus it’s not that much stuff, and fairly easy.

Personally, I never replace one component in a cooling system for just this reason. You have to drain/refill already, and everything else is just as old...

Thanks JimBob, I went through the system after this happened and replaced the parts that were deteriorated. O-rings and such. The other hoses looked good. It was the hose that runs behind the headers that was ripped in two. I’m guessing because of the intense heat cycles that it has to withstand. She’s all good now.

Good for you for surviving and still having a sense of humor about it!
The good news is that all that stuff was fairly common and likely to happen and now you've got it taken care of. Also, you are now the proud owner of a summer shield. I cut down my original one for summer use and loved it. Put on the "barn door" every year around Halloween and rode until spring, then back to the shorty.
Enjoy the ride!

Thanks SantaCruzRider, that’s what i’m thinking. Summer shield and when the fall rolls around pick up another stock one.
