Joining COG and CDA in the same day....
« on: October 27, 2016, 05:30:08 pm »
Hi, all.  I hate to join COG and CDA in one day, but that's how it goes for me.  Here's my story.

I just purchased my '87 C10 about three weeks ago.  I'm a smaller guy (5'7" and around 130), so I intended to adjust the suspension just a tad to improve my footing.  In boots I can touch almost flat-footed on both sides - usually not a problem.  I guess I'm still learning my bike's quirks, and apparently mine doesn't like to ride cold.  I fired her up and rode her a few blocks to cast my early ballot for the election.  So far so good, though she was a bit lurch-y at lower RPM's.  I did my thing at the polls, geared up, climbed on and backed her out.  As I started to work the friction zone and make a tight right turn (now with enough momentum to have my feet up), she just cut out and came to an abrupt stop at near full handle bar lock (RPM's were over 1000, and I was just into the friction zone, so I'm near certain I didn't just stall her out).  Anyway, she bucked to the inside of the turn and down she went.  :-[  Lesson learned.  From now on I will make sure she's good and warm before I take her out.

The damage:  Right side mirror bracket broke so that's flopping in the breeze.  Also, as seems to be the case with many drops, the right front foot peg bracket snapped.

I'm currently shopping online for replacement parts, but thought I would check here to see if there are any suggestions for reputable and (preferably) cheap parts?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hey, Ken!  Welcome, and I literally feel your pain.  I've dropped mine twice so far.  Thankfully no broken parts to date.

Here are a couple threads where The Wizard is selling some stuff you may need...

If he doesn't have what you need, go ahead and post in the C-10 Emporium and ask.  Never know who might chime in.

Cheers!  - Scott

Sorry about the cda. The damage will be fixed and all will be fine. My first tip over was much like yours. Making a slow uturn while the carbs were clogged. The bike went down. No damage except for my ego. Then I sent my carbs to be cleaned. This all happened within a week of my buying the bike. Still pisses me off thinking about it.

You should do something about your footing.  This bike is a bear to handle at low speeds. Consider a lowering kit.

Welcome to cog.  :beerchug:

Gravity is a summab!+*h.  Sorry to hear about your drop... dropped mine a week ago going up on the Centerstand...  Tip over bars saved my mirror and peg.  My ego was a different story.

C-10 is an easy bike to work on, you'll be back up and running in no time.   :beerchug:

Marty? You have an ego? I thought we'd beaten that out of you years ago.  ;)

Thanks, all.  Mostly just pissed at myself for not being patient enough to let it warm up.  I also adjusted the idle up a hair.  It was idling down around 800, so I brought it up to more like 9-950.  Might not have been necessary, but it makes me feel better for now!

I also let some air out of the rear suspension while I had the right side cover off.  Might need to play around with it when I have the peg back on and can do some trials with handling, but so far it's sitting lower and I'm comfortably sitting with both feet flat now.

Looking forward to getting her back on her feet and adding some drop bars soon!  I just have a feeling that she may go down again at some point as much as I'd like to think that was the one and only.
