Title: My terrible, horrible, no good, very bad start to the day
Post by: bajakirch on November 07, 2013, 09:18:40 pm
A club I never wanted to join. But alas...

This morning I really wanted to ride the bike so I could at least get 1 ride in November before I parked the bike for the season.

It started a little hard, which I chalked up to sitting in an unheated garage over several sub-freezing nights.

I rolled the bike out and, before I even got to the end of the driveway I saw the bike was smoking again -- something I tried to diagnose the other night and thought I'd tracked down to some oil dripping on the exhaust. At the end of the driveway the engine died and wouldn't restart.

I put the bike up on the side-stand and walked into the house to get my son to help me roll it back into the garage. Well, there must have been a little more downward incline at that point in the driveway than I thought. Because when we came back out, the Connie was on its side. My assumption is it rolled forward off the kickstand.

Damage:  Broken left mirror, top fairing rashed and a small plastic bit broke off next to the left turn signal.

The irritating thing is that, 2 nights ago, I pulled my highway pegs off because I figured I wouldn't need them any more this year. If they'd been on there, they could have possibly prevented some of the damage. Or maybe not.

Kind of bummed, as it seems like the MC gods are telling me my riding season is done.

Welcome to the Club. Sorry about the damage. Maybe this song will help.

Oh geez, that's terrible!  Even worse that you had just taken the pegs off.  I hate that sensation of feeling the bike move like that; this is why I put it in gear when she's on that sidestand.  At least you weren't hurt!

And so it has now become my sad duty to confirm you as the 481st recipient of the uncoveted Connie Droppers Anonymous Award.  You have yet another tale to share around a Rally campfire.  My sincerest condolences!

I don't believe you have earned a CDA since the Cycle jumped off the kickstand all by itself.  Since you are not in the picture, you don't deserve the CDA.

If a Tree falls in the Forest, and no Woman is present, is the Man still Wrong? - that kind of answer, you know.

I would recind that CDA #, Jeff , and demand your money back.  :-)

Thanks!

It looks like I'll be once again exercising those PlastiFix skills you taught me.

sorry for the fall! Look up oil leaking from header in the forum. Seems to be common. I had mine fixed under warranty and had them do a valve adjust since the bike was already pulled apart. the oil leak is fixed and the valve chack cost me $90. Good luck!

Welcome to our band of unfortunates.  I'm sorry you incurred damage but glad you're uninjured.  Uninjured?  The funny part of yours is you weren't even present!  Your bike voluntarily dropped itself, sort of like the 82nd Airborne.  Kinda cool if you think about it.

It's interesting you mention this. When I was poking around the other night looking for the culprit, I shined a flashlight up from underneath. I noticed that there seemed to be some accumulated oil on the underside of 3 of the intake manifolds.

It'll be interesting to see what I find when I take the tank off and can really eyeball things.

At least it quit in the driveway instead of stranding you somewhere and you didn't drop it in front of a bunch of people in a parking lot either. Just trying to cheer you up a bit.

As my mother use to say, "Maybe a worse fate was waiting down the road". My condolences on the drop and subsequent damage. :'(
