ARRG...... VERY Slow Ouchie....
« on: October 13, 2013, 04:57:06 pm »
I can't believe it.  Only 120 miles on a brand new C14 and down it goes... I'm not sure this kind of drop qualifies, but I'm posting anyway...

      ???

I had just topped off the tank and was pulling out of the gas station feeling wonderful.  As I stopped on a declining and angled exit area (and before getting on the road) I put down my right foot and "WOOPS"!  One (yes ONE) small rock about 1" around was in the exact place where my right foot went down.  My foot slipped out just enough to loose balance and the bike came down slowly on the right side.  It seemed like it took forever to fall.  As it was coming down, I felt the muscle in my right leg pop when trying to slow the bike's fall.  In the end, I was left embarrassed and lying face down on the ground next to my bike.  That's when the fun started.

I tried to get up, but now I can't stand easy because it seems I pulled the rear leg muscles.  There was a lot of pain initially and I was only able to manage a stooped over position.  So, there I am... looking like a total idiot all bent over in pain from an accident that happened at about zero miles per hour.  As people drive by, you can tell there are wondering "what the heck did he hit, there's nothing there???"...  I was feeling very low at that point.  A few minutes passed and a very helpful good ol' boy from the gas station was nice enough to come over and help work with me to stand up the bike.  Many thanks to him as at least the bike is upright now.

After about 20 more minutes of working on my leg, I was able to move enough to get on the bike and putter my humbled self home.  As I type, I'm sitting in a cushioned chair, leg raised, with ice on the back side of my thigh and the better half looking at me with that "I told you so" look on her face.  The leg is swollen and I may end up getting an x-ray just to be safe.  I'll decide that in a few hours and go only if necessary.  I hate the thought of going to a doctor for a zero MPH, slow-motion, crash...

The good news....  Because the distance to the ground was shortened by the angle of the road and the speed of the drop was slow, the bike isn't hurt too bad.  Most of the damage was from the texture of the road in the area it went down (ironically, it was a section of rough, anti-slip, concrete).  The damage is in the normal places, a little on the fairing, small spot on the mirror, and about a 2 inch spot on the right rear bag.

If this qualifies, I'll take my number and hope that's the worse I see for a long time.

Kap,
I am not the authority but I do believe you will qualify. Really sucks don't it? I got mine a short time ago with my new '12 as well. Welcome to the club, glad the damage wasn't too bad and I hope the leg is ok.

Any landing you can walk (limp) away from is a good landing! No really, that totally sucks and I hope that leg recovers fast. Remember RICE.....Rest,  Ice,  Compression,  Elevation.
And I think that qualifies for cda too.
Current ride is a 36 foot landyacht

Connie sure can be a top-heavy gal when she's carrying a full tank of fuel, can't she?  I am so sorry that it happened when she was brand new, but your injury is of a lot more concern.  Take care of yourself!

Yep, that was a drop.  You were pulling up to stop and put your foot down - that's good enough for me.  And so it has now become my sad duty to confirm you as the 477th recipient of the uncoveted Connie Droppers Anonymous Award.  You have yet another tale to share around a Rally campfire.  My sincerest condolences!

Sorry to hear about the drop, hope the leg improves soon. With mine, once I realized it was a lost cause i tried to step aside, tried being the key word, still suffered a broken peg plate (since fixed and back to commuting)
Sometimes you gotta stop riding the twisties and take a look at where you are.

My brother did this exact thing, trying not to drop an ST1100. Said it hurt for weeks.

Ya know, it's kind of ironic.... I hit that deer and wiped out my front end, but didn't drop the bike, so no patch for me.....

I ought to get a special "DeerKillah" patch, eh?

That would actually have been a crash, not a drop.  Now if the deer got his antlers caught in the bags and tipped it over, THAT would be a drop!

I'm with you on this one Matt.  Kap- I hope the leg heals fast.  As for the CDA- I'm really happy I earned my #444 with the C-10, and not my new 2012....

You would not be alone if we did those patches.   I have heard of at least 3 people that drove through a deer and did not go down.  Another dozen or more that killed a deer and lived to tell about it.  I know I would be far happier to have another CDA then a DeerKillah patch.

Go back to the forum's main page.  In the upper right there's a search box.  Put in Bambi and see what happens.  Gotta do it from the main page or you'll only get the ones from the forum you're in.

Ive done similar drops. Very embarrasing and can be painful. Both the C10 and C14 are very heavy bikes and are a monster to stop once they start falling. Good luck on your recovery.. I just posted a CDA on my new C14 bike.

Hope your "rear" leg muscle is doing good by now but I have to ask, do C14 riders need their Rear Leg well muscled to ride the big girls? My little c10 is heavy (driveway drop whilst removing helmet) but I dont believe I would blow my rear leg out by lifting bike  :) :)

Sorry, just had to do that. You just sorta left it hanging there.

We have to get other guys in the answer the question about strength, I don't have enough recent experience to know.  I do know that these things are heavy as they head downward...

Leg is doing good.  Ended up at the Dr. and it was my hamstring that took the damage.  I had a nice 4" bruise and another 2" on the back of my right thigh that pop up about 2 days after the drop.  They lasted a good 2 1/2 weeks.  I did a few physical therapy sessions, then dropped that for working the leg from home (still stretching it every day).  While it hurt like @#%$ when it happened (from the back of my knee up to my butt).  Now all I get is a good twitch in a hard bend.

As a side note, I didn't hurt the leg trying to pick the darn thing up.  I hurt it trying to stop it as it was slowing going down.  When I lost grip with my right foot, it slid away from the bike and the bike headed down on that same side.  My left foot was off the ground on the high side of the bike.  I was kinda doing the splits as the bike was coming down.  I assure you, if there had been a camera, it would have made America's Funniest Bloopers...  I suspect a few people that were driving by at that exact moment are still laughing at parties over that slow motion fiasco.
