So close!!
« on: September 06, 2012, 11:25:30 pm »
I know I'm not really a member of CDA (yet :()  But today on my way home from work this evening I stopped to replace a dislodged manhole cover (altruistic citizen that I am).  Click Connie into neutral and kick down the side stand.  Here's where things got dicey......A slight downhill grade combined with a hump in the pavement beneath the side stand prevented the bike from settling.  I had dismounted when I saw her rolling forward (at this point I thought of all the horror stories I'd read about helplessly trying to keep a bike up from beside it).  I was on the right side of the bike and grabbed the right side grip, I let her keep rolling forward while I lept aboard and used my legs to stabilize her while my heart raced!!
More carefully this time I parked and finally slid that darned manhole cover back into place.

Cheap lesson learned today.  ALWAYS park carefully!! :beerchug:

Glad she didnt go down. I NEVER put my bike on the side stand in neut. Even when in gear I let the bike role whatever direction gravity takes her untill the gear lash is take up.

Never mind.  Riding in this morning I dumped Connie at 55.  Lots of bruises and scrapes of elbows and knees but nothing broken.  Bike seems to be toast......Bent forks, bent brake rotor (3 days old), broken rear wheel, destroyed rear tire, centerstand gone, various plastics shredded, one bag destroyed.  Badness :( :( :(

Wow, it's like that song "if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all". Glad your relatively ok. Hope the insurance company makes it all better with the bike.

Straight road, built a little  speed and when I grabbed the front brake to scrub off aforementioned speed......front end locked and the bike dove into the street.  I slid 100-150 feet and the bike went into an oncoming Caddy (bumper, fender, wheel, door, and rear wheel all damaged).

all in all a truly s***** day.

Oh yeah, being frugal and apparently overconfident, I only have liability insurance on the bike since it was paid for. >:(

Sorry about the bike & your crash.
On the plus side - you're still vertical and on the tight side of the grass.
Riding season is winding down - great time to shop / buy and plan for next year.
Ride safe(r).

Was this a 2008-2010 non ABS bike? Maybe I missed it. Just wondering. Nevermind. I see 1995 in your signature. Do not know why but, I initially assumed it had to be a C14.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys.

I'm sore today and will spend some time growing new skin on my elbows and knees for the next couple of weeks.  I'm sure everyone here wears a helmet but I gotta say, jacket and gloves would have made a HUGE difference.
