How to post pictures
« on: October 26, 2008, 10:40:00 am »
Here are instructions to post a picture in your sig file or just in the body of your message:
Posting just a picture:
  1) Load your picture onto a website like www.webshots.com.
  2) Find the URL of the picture.
  3) Paste it into the body of your message on the forum using the following format.
  Note, to show you I had to replace the [ with a { and the ] with a }.  There are 2 of each.
  {IMG} http://thumb6.webshots.net/t/73/73/5/21/64/2552521640053849446AXYqzg_th.jpg{/IMG}
When you put them back in you get:

Posting a picture with an embedded link:
1) Load your picture onto a website like www.webshots.com
2) Find the URL of the picture.
3) Paste it into the body of your message on the forum using the following format.
Note, to show you I had to replace the [ with a { and the ] with a }.  There are 4 of each.
{URL=http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2552521640053849446AXYqzg]{IMG}http://thumb6.webshots.net/t/73/73/5/21/64/2552521640053849446AXYqzg_th.jpg{/IMG}{/URL}
When you put them back in you get a photo that you can click on to send you to the page:

NOTE: Be sure there are no extraneous spaces, carriage returns, or line feed characters in the image URL. This will cause all sorts of unwanted results.

« Reply #1 on: October 08, 2010, 07:24:52 pm »
Needs updating Norm now that we have the image include buttons etc.

Links
To inset a link use the Inset Hyperlink Icon that gives you the basic starting code of
Code: [Select]

then add = and the site address in this case http://cog-online.org in the first part of the Tag
and the Text you want to display in the second part
Code: [Select]
COG Website
The end result gives you this: COG Website

I just went to my online photo storage place and got the link to a photo there.  Every photo storing site is different and you may have to learn how to get a working link to the pictures there.

I now click the insert image button from the tools above.  It is just above the first smile face on my screen.

The button put in the text window some code similar to this {img}{/img}

You just insert the link you copied from your web photo hosting site in the middle of that code where I wrote Put Link Here.
{img}Put Link Here{/img}

I tried to post a picture using Picassa. All I got was a box with a red X.  Can anyone train this Luddite?

Sure... but I need to see what you did to explain what not to do.  Also provide a direct link to the photo.

I followed Bob Smith's example; use the "insert image" button, put the link in between {img}Put Link Here{/img} .  Here's the link:

Part of the problem is the mage tags use brackets ([ ]) not braces ({ }). You can use the insert image button above the edit window to put these in if you forget.  The link you provided above is for the web page that contains the photo, not to the image itself.  You may need to read up more on using Picasaweb to get direct links to photos. Feel free to call me for more in depth question & answer session.

Typically you can right click on an image and copy the link location and then paste it here. By doing this I found the link to this image is this:
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_MKwWGdeVY90/TOAMKK-j0CI/AAAAAAAAAOM/yMuEQg4u5BA/2001%20W650%20001.jpg

Putting these pieces together yields this.....

You need to use the html tags, which by default is turned on for admins only.
Then the code you need is below the link, click on 'embed'
Code: [Select]
<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YoweksIXiu0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Allowing html is considered a risk as people will abuse and misuse it and break the layout, so it is disabled for most users. I should have made that clear, it did not work for me, so I assume it is disabled.

Sorry to resuscitate this old thread, but I'm trying to learn to post photos and have some problems:

1) I am basically a dinosaur when it comes to computers. If something is intuitive, my "intuit-ing" works pretty well but I need step-by-step directions to do a lot of stuff that 10-year-olds can do in their sleep.

2) I have uploaded pics and sent them using Yahoo mail, but never used a photo-sharing site. Some of my friends use Flickr, which is free (can you tell I own a Connie?). Webshots wants $20/year; is there an advantage to using a pay service? I only need it for stuff like the COG forum; I prefer to store the bulk of my digital photos privately.

3) Not that I was any good with them anyway, but I lost the "Cut" and "Paste" buttons, along with the whole digital clipboard thingy, when  Windows updated itself and changed toolbars a while back. Now there's just a cog ( :great:) with tools under it like the Print stuff. I am a big user of analog (real) clipboards; if I can't cut-and-paste the URL (I hope that means the computer "address" for the photo), can I just write it down and enter it manually, in between the two [img] thingies that get inserted in the text when I hit the "Insert Image" button? I'm using Windows Vista and Internet Explorer, if that helps.

4) If any patient soul would like to help this poor little old lady across the street, reply or PM me and we'll go from there. Thanks!

2)  Local storage is great until everything is lost with a drive crash. After researching services I decided to pay $40/year for Smugmug.com to archive all my photos...  No advertising and total control over security, galleries, etc...  and the ability to upgrade to support video or pro features. You can get a discount on your first year by using a coupon code from a current user.

3) Who needs cut / paste buttons. Use the keyboard instead. It's way faster.
CTRL-C = copy
CTRL-V = paste

You can also attach pictures to the post. When you are in the post editor underneath the text box there is a plus sign, and the words "Attachments and other options". Click there to expand the attachment center. This is a good way to do it if you have just a few pics to upload, now and then, but if you have a lot of pics or plan to do it often a dedicated photo host is the way to go.

S Smith:

See what I mean, fellow Troglodites? I never knew that about the keyboard! Now let me find a piece of burnt charcoal or a stylus and clay tablet or something, so I can write that down...

WillyP:

I tried that already but it kept telling me my attachment was too large (after a wait). I was only clicking on one photo; maybe somehow I was choosing the whole folder?

Your photo is sized too large. You will need to re size it. Another obstacle.  :-[

Thanks, Cap. I saw something about photo resizing in the help threads; I'll have to go back and read up on it. I've been trying to start a build thread on my 99 project but that isn't too much good w/o pictures!

Thanks WillyP.

ZG, everything's easy once you figure it out. Photobucket may well be better than Flickr in this instance, I don't know. But I've got all my pics on Flickr and I'm not changing now.
