Title: Concours (C14) Fender Extenders Front and Rear
Post by: Blue One on April 06, 2011, 05:50:12 pm
I have designed my own fender extender for the C14.  I  vaccum mold them myself and they are longer and provide more coverage than any other currently available fender extender for the Concours.

They are made of black textured ABS plastic. The stock fender is ABS plastic as well. Installation involves removing the fender and gluing the extender on with ABS glue available in any plumbing supply or building supply such as Home Depot or Lowes.

The extender blends in well with the Concours styling and looks OEM.

It will protect your radiator from damage, and also protect the lower cowling and oil filter and pipes area.

The price is $45 US which includes mailing to your address.  If you want to order just send me a message and I can give you an address to send paypal payment to.

Take a look at the pictures.

An edit so that you will all understand this is not brand new, there are hundreds of my extenders out in service on Concours -GTR 14's all over the world. I noticed my other thread is still on here from before as well. The pictures will appear larger on that thread ! Or you can just click on these and they get bigger  ;)

Larry.

Definitely a better design. Unfortunately I recently installed a different model. If you would consider a rear fender that has more coverage than the huggers that are available I would be interested. Good luck with you new design.

I also make a rear fender extender $60 US. It installs differently as the rear fender is made of Polypropylene plastic and nothing can be glued to it. So the rear extender is rivited in place and sealed inside with black RTV.

It looks good with the style of the bike and is a big improvement in the function of the rear fender. It helps keep the rear of the bike cleaner and drier in the rain as well it helps keep everything under the seat itself drier.
I have been told this by guys who have installed it, one in Ireland and one on  the island of Borneo (Malaysia) (Not the only ones out there !)

Hello
I am interested in your article.
The price remains $ 60
I want to know the amount of shipping to Spain.
That way it would be possible payment?
Bank transfer or PAY-PAL
The payment method with which I usually work with the U.S. is through PAYPAL.

Waiting for your reply
Best regards from Melilla (North Africa) ^-^

Blue's extended, for the front, is amazing.  I cannot believe how much cleaner the radiator is. HUGE difference. Easy to mount, very secure, and barely noticeable when looking at the bike. It blends in well and goes un-noticed.

On a 1-5 scale, many parts rate 3 stars.  A few rate four. Some, like this extender,  make you feel bad the scale only goes to five.

What part of the Northwest are you in?

I just installed a rear Kawasaki mud flap to deal with the mess from the back, but this looks like it would have even more coverage.  Plus, putting the mud flap on your extension would make it even better.

If you are in the region, I'd like to see it on a bike.

Just a note on my C10 fender extender i bought.

I used "Right Stuff" adhesive to attach it to the front fender.  Works great, no screws or rivets.

I have used this stuff on my racecar for years, and I'm pretty sure it'd hold the tiles on the space shuttle!

BlueOne,

Sorry for the off topic question,  but what rear tire are you running on your Concours.  The pictures show a tire I have not seen before on a Concours ?

Thanks

If I recall correctly he is in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.

Hi, yes, you got it Edmonton Alberta.
The rear tire was a Metzler.

OK, I'll take that as a "No".

OK, I'll take that as a "No".

My aren't we sensitive  ;D  If you read the earlier posts your question was answered just not by me.

I am in Edmonton Alberta.  Not sure if there is a bike with a rear extender installed in  your area that you could look at.

The pictures I posted show very well what the rear extender looks like on the bike and an extra mud flap would not be needed.

Larry.

Sensitive??  Ha!  I'm usually accused of just the opposite.  ;)

OK, so you are in Edmonton.  I guess I didn't think of that as being in the NW region, but then, where else could it be?  Even so, if you've been selling these to folks in the US, you might know of someone that bought one closer to me.  Just a thought.

I have a suspicion the pictures don't do it justice.  From the pictures, the rear extender has a look to it that, well, I'm not sure I like.  I thought if I saw one in person, on a bike, it would help.

C1, I felt the same way before ordering one of Blues extenders.   It is long, but I felt the protection factor was worth it.   In reality, the black, textured finish makes it hard to notice once its attached.   Plus, it stops everything from flying off the front tire.  I went through a fresh, tarred/gravel section yesterday. So bad I could her it hitting the fender.  I knew I woudl have a real mess once I got home.

I spent 30 minutes cleaning the back section of the bike. No time on the front as the extender blocked everything.

Thanks, but I'm looking at the rear extender.  I already have one on the front.  I've added a hugger, plus a mud flap to the end of the factory rear "fender", because the crap coming off the back tire is ridiculous.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with you there. I'm not sure that anything that will work in the rain is going to look good in
the dry. I'm guessing that you aren't that thrilled with the way the mud flap is working either eh?.
What's needed here (like the automatic lowering seat in my "crap I can dream up that nobody will make dept.") is a retractable extender that
automatically extends when it gets wet.  ::)

...slightly off topic, I have Blue One's front extender and I'm very happy with it.

Actually the mud flap works great, but only inline with the tire.  The sides of the tire still splatters the insides of the bags, the mufflers (duals), and my feet.

I added the mud flap because my trunk lock was getting filled with crap, and seizing up.
Title: Re: Concours (C14) Fender Extender
Post by: Blue One on October 16, 2011, 04:02:26 pm
The feedback I have gotten on the rear extender has been good. It is effective in stopping most of the crap that is thrown off the rear tire. The rediculous little triangular shaped piece of plastic Kawasaki put on there as a rear fender doesn't come close to being effective as you know.

The rear extender turns the rear fender into something more like a full coverage fender that a touring oriented bike should have. It may not look sleek and sporty and show the rear tire like that poor little stock fender, but it's a trade off in favor of function.

In any case I have made and sent out a great many front extenders, lesser numbers of the rear but most who have them like them.  It's kind of a love it or not kinda thing  with the rear one ;)

The front extender continues to be the best you can buy for the C14.

The rears are more difficult to mold than the front and I only make them as an order comes in.

Got my front fender extender. Did any of you guys that installed already,  use a primer with the abs glue or just glue? Also I roughed up the stock fender, do I need to rough up the extender for the glue to stick better?

I used Right Stuff on mine  worked great.  Been on there for 8000+ miles.  I cleaned both surfaces and skimmed on a layer of Right Stuff.

No primer should be required, use only ABS specific glue designed for bonding ABS plastics together.

They are a type of solvent cement meaning that they slightly melt (chemically) the surfaces and bond them together almost like welding.

Using any other type of glue will not work properly as an extender may seem bonded in place but in some cases a slight impact of any sort will actually knock it off.

Using ABS glue however is permanent.

I put on another front ABS fender extender and it melted this summer when I was in KC during rush hour traffic and over 100 deg air temp.  It came within 1/8" of the tire.  Have you had any issues with yours when things get really hot?

No melting problems here.  I believe it is because of the thickness of the plastic I use which is a full 1/8" . It does thin slightly due to molding however another factor is the actual design of my extender which is strong because of the shape.

There are plenty of my extenders in service in some very hot parts of the world (Texas and Australia come to mind first  ;)  )  And there have been no problems like you have had.

If you are interested in my extender, your old one can be removed by gently heating inside the extender with a heat gun (being careful to not overheat and distort the fender itself)

When it's warm enough to weaken the glues bond you can peel the old extender off.
Then a little sanding of the inside will prep it for a new extender.

Hope that helps.
Larry.

Will send you a PM. Most of the forums prefer that you do things through the private message system and sometimes I prefer it too. On occasion if a forum is open to the public and your contact info is posted you end up with tons of "male enhancement" ads and other assorted junk mail  :-\

For those interested in Larry's fender extender, I purchased one about a year ago for my 2010 C14 and I love it!  It blends in nicely with the lower black cowling and blue paint.  More importantly, it protects the radiator without having to purchase an expensive radiator guard and keeps the radiator clean on long trips.  Far better than the shorter extenders!

Yep, your extender is making it's journey to you as we speak.  You will see good pictures on your instructions for the installation. If you want to get the glue in advance go into the plumbing department at Home Depot or Lowes and look for the ABS glue. ABS is commonly used for household drainage pipe, (the black stuff) and the glue you need is what the plumbers use to hold the pipes together.

Roger that, have glue, have fender extender. Thanks for shipping it so fast !

Looks like its well made, and I'm sure it will find a good home soon.

This past Tuesday, a Kawasaki dealer in Frederick who is part of the COSTCO discount program called me up and asked if I wanted his black 2012 C14. I thanked him but I'm still waiting on my local dealer. For a place with 3 ichiban plaques I don't understand why its taking them so long to get the 2012 bikes locally. Must be coming by way of Hawaii or something. Soon (tm).

If anyone else wants to know, both front and rear extenders purchased together usually total  $ 105.  (Front $45 and Rear $60)  I ship both in one package for $90  :)

Well, so much for the write up this week, or was that last week?  :truce: I'll get to it as soon as the paid work is done.  ;)

In the mean time, here's a before and after pic. Decided to add the sticker to distract from the potato launcher.  :D

Thanks for posting the pics. Looks good and will do a lot to help keep your rear end clean.   :)  The bikes rear end that is   ;)

The sticker is a nice touch.

Any plans on doing a rear hugger? ;D  I really don't like the idea of all that road debris pelting the rear shock.

Thanks, the posting in Europe would be great. The cost to get them over to Europe goes up due to cost of mailing. I use airmail which is quick but does cost me.

I usually have to add to the cost accordingly. For the front the cost to most parts of the world is $60 US. The rear is $90 US. Sent together in one box is a much better deal at $120 US. Of course those prices include the cost of mailing.

I have shipped these all over the world, there are lots of them out there everywhere from Germany to the Island of Borneo (Malaysia)

Payment via Paypal is preferred.  As usual a PM to me gets things going.

No plans for a Hugger. The best way to protect the shock is to install a small hugger, or I have seen some small flap arrangements installed.

My goal was a more functional front and rear fender to keep the rad safe and stop crap from spraying all over off the rear tire.

Soon (tm).

Well, I got it installed, was a piece of cake and looks great. Used real plumber's ABS glue, roughed up the inside of the fender a little with sandpaper, glued it, clamped it, its permanent now.

Ok, I will do that. I haven't even put it back on, I'm waiting for my friend with the machine shop to finish bracing the brackets which normally hold the reflectors, but I'm using them to hold the Twisted Throttle 6mm Fender Mount for my D2 LED lights.

So I can take a picture of it so you can see it close up.  Its raining right now, I can't get wet, I'll melt. Soon (tm)     :beerchug:

That is funny. If you need to you can use the general purpose cement as it specifically mentions that it will work on ABS plastic.

The problem comes when someone uses epoxy or some other glue that is not good on ABS and only forms a weak surface bond, unlike the way the plastic needs to be bonded with a slight melting and solvent type bond.

Bought mine from Amazon, since I have a Prime membership I didn't have to pay shipping, and of course no tax.

Just searched for "ABS glue" and it found me plumbers ABS pipe glue, which worked fantastic. I would have to rip my oem fender and still wouldn't get the extender to come loose.

I got mine off the MC Larry web site, came in 2 days, put it on yesterday. My Lowe's had the black ABS glue. No issues with the install, I even got those brake line retainer clips off with no problem once I went to the auto parts store and got a pair of long needle nose pliers with a curved tip.

I should have ordered the rear extender at the same time, I'm thinking now that I want it.

Now that I have the body panels all back on my 2012 I can see how the front extender really looks, and I like it. It clears the botton chin section with plenty of room to spare, too.

I just ordered the rear section, might as well get it done while the bike is still showroom clean. Heh.

I have a ride report I almost forgot to give on the front fender extender.

Last weekend, I rode for almost 2 hours in the rain, over back country roads, across a few sections with mud on the asphalt from tractors crossing between fields, and so forth.

When I got back, I noticed my black ProjekD radiator guard was absolutely clean. Black shows everything, too.

So I can unequivocally say the front fender extender works well.

And without the fender extender the bottom third of your radiator may well have been on it's way to being plugged with mud between the fins.....

Glad it works as intended.

Take a look at the pictures, the original fender almost may as well not be there. It ends about 2" or so above the bottom of the radiator. My fender extender is about 7 " or so in length.

Just installed fender extender. Job was simple to do and works and looks well. Just a word of advise when installing, Outline the two seems with blue masking tape prior to glueing which will prevent anything from getting on the fender paint. Im sure this has been already mentioned in previous posts but I didnt bother to go back and read all of them.

Pictures will be posted later this afternoon. I finally installed the rear extender, and it fits great, looks great, the quality is good, the instructions are good.

I admit to taking far less care in drilling the holes for the rivets, but if I can't drill simple holes in ABS with titanium bits and machinist creds its time to give up completely. Heh.

First so you can see how far down it comes in the back...

Looks good. Now your rear end will stay cleaner  :)

Larry.

True dat !

I used ABS cement as well, sparingly, and then inside a fairly good amount along the seam to keep it from leaking to the outside. It fits well enough that if you were careful you could probably just ABS glue it, if you had the right kind of clamps. But the black headed pop rivets are a good idea, she will never come off.

So I have front and rear now. When are you going to make something like a screen that covers the lower portion of the opening under the radiator? Just kidding, I know metal work is not your thing. Or is it?

Just asking because the quality of your mold making skills is obvious, based on how well the pieces fit, and I can see no evidence of mold shrink.

Hi JR , A couple things  :)  I'm awful glad you didn't use ABS glue to hold the rear extender on.

It would possibly stick initially but then would quickly fall off. If you look at the inside of the rear fender you will see 2 letters molded into it. They identify the type of plastic the piece is made of.

The rear fender says PP which stands for Polypropylene which will not accept glue. Very few glues if any that I have found do a good job of  bonding to Polypropylene.

That is why I provide the rivets and also show sealing the inside seam with black RTV silicone in the instructions.

The rear fender is not like the front and the rest of the plastic which is ABS. That's why my front fender extenders can be installed using only ABS glue, ABS to ABS.

As for metal work, actually my trade is Welding. Have been a Pressure-Tig welder/ fabricator my whole life and my full time day job (last 15 years) is teaching welding.

The fender extenders I make are molded from ABS sheet using a vacuum molder that I built myself. Heat the plastic and form it over a male buck (mold) .

And yes, I make my molds, you would be amazed at how many hundred man hours go into one mold.   :o

I do this in my home garage  :)

The ABS cement I put inside seems to have bonded, I cannot pry it loose with a pick.

I wouldn't be surprised about what time goes into making a a mold. I worked with MDI in Japan to help them make molds from my ZX14 bodywork to make carbon fiber replacements. It took quite some time, and a number of iterations, to get molds that accomodated shrinkage both when the mold cured, and when the matte cured. Holes for instance for wellnuts along the top of the middle fairing (much like the C14 just all one piece - side, belly, foreman grills were only pieces) had to have increased spacing slightly for holes #1 and #2 to accomodate both mold and matte shrinkage.

They did it in a garage too, and half of the garage was dedicated to so called "garage kits" which are PP or resin anime figures which you assemble, paint, and dress. Which is a whole industry in its own right. I have several of the girls from Dead Or Alive in varying scales, including one which is 2 feet tall. Expensive, and the only people who can accurately paint them true to the anime genre they are taken from are in Tokyo and Taiwan and charge a lot. The results are stunning though.

Anyway, at least I used the pop rivets, and ran a bead of black RTV Adhesive / Sealant all the way around the inside too. It will be fine.

That Japanese stuff is interesting.  Glad it worked out and you used the rivets. We know for sure it won't fall off down the road that way.

Summer is almost here and I am winding down to enjoy it myself. I will be around checking messages from time to time and if I am out on the road myself I may be a little slow to respond or fill orders however a little patience will pay off as I will get back to you.

Ride safe and happy summer adventures.   :)

Rode for 4 hours in a torrential downpour (and lots of lighting) during my second travel day going home from the National. The front and rear fender extenders did a great job of minimizing the spray you get in heavy rain, which always carries a lot of mud and junk with it, no matter where you are, it seems.

My bike stayed pretty darn clean through it all.

Thanks guys it's good to hear that they work as intended. I have always been amazed that the designers don't fit a decent front and rear fender on a sport touring bike like the C14. But that's ok, it left it open to me to find a solution  :)

For all the ones who have sent me messages, I'm sorry I have not been able to respond. I am on the road untill the end of August and for some reason I can't get the messaging system to open my private messages to repy to you.

Hang in there until the end of August and I will be abkle to reply and give you ordering details and fill orders as well.

Thanks to everyone for your patience while we are off in extended road trip -holiday mode. Having the entire summer off has its advantages  :)

Thanks so much for the extreme patience for anyone who ordered near the end of August and Sept 1 or so. After returning home at the end of August I was laid up and could not return to work at my regular teaching job for several days due to an extreme dental pain experience that left me down and out.  :truce:  The dentist fixed me up after pulling a tooth that could not be saved and now I have a couple more visits to go.

As a result doing any molding was also out of the question.
Back at work now and all my back orders have been filled and will go out in tomorrows mail.

Again, thanks for the patience and your extenders are on the way  :great:

Good to hear guys. I always thought that a sport touring bike needed a better rear fender than what they fitted from the factory. That little triangle of plastic did practically nothing.
Glad my design is working well.

Larry,

Will your front extender work on a ZX14 / ZX14R ?

Asking for some ZX14 owners.

Yes, it will also fit the ZX 14. The fender is identical to the Concours fender on the bottom end. I have sold  quite a few to ZX14 riders, I round the bottom off slightly for a sportier look still  maintaining the effectiveness  of the extender.

Here is a picture of the ZX14 extender, I believe I may even have a picture of it on a ZX14 at home.

I know I have praised these extenders before on a previous page, but I have just about finished winterizing my bike so I have an entire riding season past during which I had both extenders installed.

What I found out is despite all the rain and such, the back end of the bike stayed amazingly clean. The bags got a light film on the bottoms, but nothing like the caked on stuff you get without the rear extender.

And I haven't even had to wash the radiator guard mesh off, it stayed clean all season. There is a pewter angel bell hanging down low in the front, and its not even dirty.

So after a season of riding with both extenders installed, all I can say is,  :great:

That's surprising, the big building supply places like Home Depot or Lowes usually carry it in their plumbing departments.

But it's good you were able to source some anyway,we sure have good resources available to us these days.  :great:

It's been over a year since I put on my front extender, but even then Home Depot only had a sort of universal cement that included
ABS but no specific ABS cement. I skipped the universal stuff and went to Lowes where I found the ABS specific cement. It's my understanding
that most RVs use ABS plumbing. It may be that before long, that one will need to go to a RV accessory store to get some right now, instead of waiting for
the internet delivery vehicle of your color choice to show up.

Larry,

In your opinion, does the front fender eliminate the need for a radiator guard?
All others welcome to chime in with their thoughts :o

Larry,

In your opinion, does the front fender eliminate the need for a radiator guard?
All others welcome to chime in with their thoughts :o

The radiator is vulnerable to items being thrown off the tire, but it is also vulnerable to road hazards that may come bouncing towards the bike. Stones kicked up by other vehicles are one of them.

The fender extender stops things like rocks and tar and dirt from getting to your radiator from your front tire. Another thing the front fender extender stops is the annoying steam that rises from the hot rad when the water sprayed by the front tire goes through it. Typically happens when stopped at a traffic light.

There is a small danger of getting some damage to the rad from something other than the front wheel, but it is up to you if you feel a rad guard is also needed.
I know of a great many bikes running without one, just with my fender extender.

One of the problems I have seen associated with a radiator guard can be hotter running. In a really hot climate it can add up to a substantial ,noticeable difference.
The radiator guard can block airflow, even a small amount can impact running temp.

I know of one C14 owner in Australia who removed his rad guard for that reason.

So again, the choice is up to you. Just something to consider.

Larry,  please forgive me if this question is covered earlier in this long thread. The photo of the C14 rear extender looks like it might make rear wheel removal a bit tricky (on centerstand/floor, not on a bike lift with a drop tail).  Is there still plenty of clearance?

Can't recall if it's on here, it may be  :)

It makes it a little more awkward, but most people will used a bike lift that has the removable plate under the rear wheel so it isn't an issue.

Having the bike on the centerstand taking off the front and rear wheels the bike will tip forward enough that again it isn't a problem. I've  done it several times by having the front wheel off and just tipping the bike forward till the front forks sit on an upside down milk crate with a square piece of plywood sitting on it.

The function of the rear extender makes the small inconvenience worthwhile.

Black ABS Cement is what you are looking for in a blue can.

I mean't to comment on this, black colored cement is great, but any color will work. I also suggest a small bead of black RTV silicone applied to the seam INSIDE the fender extender to seal it from possibly leaking any water or dirt.

Larry.  Order away fellas, lots available.  :great:

Okay I've paid and now anxiously awaiting my fender extenders front and rear.....okay I only paid 15 minutes ago but still !
I ordered the rear too because this fall/winter I'll be getting a "Third Wheel" single wheel trailer from the great guys in my home town.  These trailers are amazing.
Truth be told, I don't really like the look of the rear fender extender that much but I think that the rear fender extender is a must to protect that investment as well.

The look of the rear is a love it or not situation, however the stock rear fender is a joke. A bike that is designed as a sport touring mount and in your case wanting to protect a trailer somewhat as well as keeping the rear of the bike cleaner should have a much more functional rear fender rather than what it has.

That is the purpose of the rear extender, to give that functionality, and it looks decent enough too.

Just got the rear extender. Nice piece of work! Just one question. In the photos I see of an installed extender, the rivets look black. The rivets in the picture in your instructions appear to be black on the top of the rivet. The ones in the package sent are silver. Can these rivets be painted black or do you know where I can purchase the rivets that are already black? Thanks!!

Just for general info, as I answered Mike by PM. I am looking into getting black rivets again however a simple  Black Artline 400 paint marker will paint the rivet heads black easily.

Just a quick note about rear wheel removal and the rear fender extender.

One of the first things I was asked about my rear fender extender was how was I going to get the wheel off. I became concerned as well. Having finally purchased a tire changer I did my own C14 tires for the first time just before the 2014 National. I'm not sure if what I did was really needed, but it worked so I'm passing it along here as some may have concerns. I rode the bike's rear wheel up on two wood panels that had a combined thickness of 1.5 inches. I lowered the center stand on two pieces with the same combined thickness (1.5  in.) the wheel and tire cleared easily with a little fender side deflection and a tilt of the wheel. The fender had much more deflection available so again, I'm not sure if the 1.5 in. of raising was really needed. Additionally for those that may wonder, I have the stock muffler, I would think that most after market mufflers would offer even more clearance. I pass this along so those concerned about it know that there is a solution that doesn't involve a motorcycle lift with a removable panel.

Unrelated to the fender extender, but with the rear wheel off, and a jack with piece of wood under the headers the front wheel can be easily raised enough for removal so that removal of the front fender isn't needed. I used a ratchet strap around the center stand  crossbar and looped up over the oil filter as a safety measure to ensure that the stand didn't fold up while this was all in progress.

If has already been addressed, please forgive my laziness to read 18 pages of "PM sent" etc. etc.   :)
Title: Re: Concours (C14) Fender Extenders Front and Rear
Post by: Blue One on July 07, 2014, 09:12:47 pm
When changing out the front and rear tires, both wheels can be removed simply by using the center stand, no boards under it needed.

Get the bike on the center stand and then remove the front wheel leaving the fender in place. An upside down milk crate or similar crate with a piece of plywood works to set the front forks on and support the front of the bike.

It also lets the bike lean forward and raises the rear wheel enough that you can easily remove the rear wheel without trouble from the fender extender.

There is no danger of the center stand collapsing and the bike falling.

And yes it has been addressed, as well along with the PM sent's there are lots of tips and other things along the way and plenty of satisfied buyers  :)

Does the rear fender interfere with rear wheel removal?

There is some discussion on the thread previous to this. The answer is it depends on where you try to remove the wheel. If it's beside the road then the answer is yes. If it's in the garage during a tire change then the answer is no.
The rear wheel can be removed with no issues on a motorcycle lift with the panel that removes to drop the rear wheel, or it can also be removed with the bike on the center stand while the front wheel is also off the bike.
The rear wheel can also be removed with the front wheel on and the bike on the center stand by putting a piece of 2x6 under the center stand.

So there you have it, yes and no.  :)

Hey Larry,  I bought a 6 month old '08 in the spring of '09.  I did not realize for quite awhile that the previous owner chopped off the "tail" of the rear fender approx. 1/4 in. above the lower edge of the license plate.  Is this a problem adding your rear extender?

My fender extender is designed to retain the complete original rear fender including the small reflector mounted into the bottom edge.

If the reflector was cut off and only 1/4" was taken then you might get away with it.

Any more and there would be a hole left where the missing part of the fender was.

That hole could be dealt with in a number of ways, none of which would be all that attractive.

In that case your best bet would be to find a replacement rear fender.

Larry.

Blue One, is your rear fender extender as wide as the Stock C-14 Fender?
If so, it might help riders with wife's on the back..

One of the riders at Big Bend had his wife with him.
She held on by holding the grab rails beside her.
In the rain,, her hands got soaked! (from the water that comes off the rear tire)

I suggested they contact you about using your rear fender extender..

Ride safe, Ted

Hey Ted, the rear fender extender is actually wider than the stock rear fender that it attaches to. It takes the pathetic little triangle of plastic that they put on as a rear fender and turns it into what it should have been, a functional rear fender that will help a lot with the spray and dirt that comes off the rear tire.
Lots of guys are using it because of problems like the one you posted.
Larry.

Well, I finally got time to put the front fender extender on yesterday and all is well.  I used ABS cement from Amazon and spring clamps from Sears to hold things together.

The brake line clips were easy to come out as mine look like a coarse plastic screw design not the split type that's on other years.  I just pryed the clips off with a flat blade and they came right out.

My bike is a 2012 Candy Arabian Red.

Good job Blue One - your design is excellent and a great example of Canadian ingenuity

I'll be talking to a member this weekend that may be interested in your rear Fender Extender.
He's interested in it to keep water (mist) from coming up (and getting on his passenger) on the sides of the fender.

Can you tell me the width of the extender?

Ride safe, Ted

I'll put a tape measure on it later when I get home and post results. I can't quite remember off the top of my head.
I can tell you that it makes the rear fender very effective at stopping the water and mist for the passenger.
I originally designed it for a buddies bike whose wife was getting drenched as a passenger on the bike and it worked very well.

The rear fender extender adds 2" of width to each side of the fender at the stock fenders widest point (near the top) It adds 4" of width on each side at the narrow point (bottom of the stock fender).
It adds 6  1/2" to the length measured from the bottom of the stock fender.
As you can see in the pictures it has a nice complimentary curve to it and makes the rear fender what it should be, a functional fender.
Hope that info helps.
Larry.

I cut some of the length off my rear extender to make room for the trailer hitch to fit over the ball. And its still long enough to do the job. The hitch will get filthy but a hose can fix that.

I just received my f&r extenders several days ago and put them on this week. Larry, you make some quality parts. Thank you. I'm curious to see if the front extender will clear the wheel chock on my trailer. I'll check that out next week. I'm really looking forward to having the extra protection from wet road grime getting all over my bike. I like the look of having a real, purposeful fender over the rear wheel now. My radiator and Fiamm horns should stay cleaner now, too. Thanks again, Larry!

Larry, I was having trouble with my front extender working lose over time. So I solved the problem. I used a small grinder and roughed up the underside of the OEM fender where they match up, as well as the extender. Then used pipe cement as usual. Clamped it, and let it dry a couple days. Then I drilled and put 4 black head rivets in.

That sucker ain't never coming off!  >:D

These are the perfect size for the job. You need a really good rivet gun for them though, the shafts are a bit thick and good grade metal.

I'm surprised that you would have any issue with the front fender extender coming loose. I have done installs for local riders and when properly installed, (roughed up as instructed and glued with a proper amount of ABS solvent cement-glue) they are there for good, not coming off unless you want to destroy the fender in the process. No rivets required.
Properly done, ABS glue is almost like a chemical welding of the plastic.
A much cleaner installation.

Proper gluing and clamping along with the sealing bead of black silicone on the inside seam where the extender meets the fender insure that the joint is not infiltrated by water or dirt and helps make sure  it won't come off.

If you did decide to use rivets (shudder) the nice 1/8" black ones (large head, larger than the example posted above) I supply with the rear extender would be the way to go. ( with a 1/8" backing washer )

The 3/16" diameter  rivets are way too big. Not perfect for the job. We are only talking about holding two pieces of plastic together when talking about rivets. 1/8" rivets with the backup washers are more than adequate, larger is just overkill.
Larry.

Larry , I purchased a front fender extender for my 09 C-14 from you and I'm very pleased w/my purchase. A friend purchased the same thing for his 2014 C-14 and his looks to be shorter than mine. Did they come in different sizes or did the fender length change from factory?   His fender has the brake hose holders (plastic clips) mounted on the side of the fender but mine is on the top. Just wondering?  Thanks   ALAN in S. Fl

Hi Alan, I mold the fender extenders and cut them out by hand. As such there is sometimes a small variation in overall length.

The fenders are all the same except for brake hose location.

Well, maybe you think I didn't install it right, but I believe you would be wrong in assuming that. And I certainly didn't make up the fact it fell off.

And my rivets are working great. Being an experienced machinist, albeit not able to stand at an engine lathe or vertical mill for at least a decade, I see nothing in the strengths of materials involved that would say otherwise.

Actually I will not get into a contest with you on who is right (as it's me  ;)  )

I didn't say you made up the fact that it was falling off, however that fact confirms the following:

If it was falling off, it was not properly installed in the first place. No assuming.

As the designer and maker of these fender extenders and having installed a great many of them myself for local riders I can assure you that if your fender extender was falling off then you installed it poorly.

When you clean properly and apply glue properly along with clamping, the ABS solvent cement practically welds the 2 pieces together.
No way it is coming off.  Period.

And I repeat, no rivets required.

I'm glad you sorted out your problem.
Larry.

After having installed my f&r extenders from Larry, I have replaced both tires (f&r) and have towed my bike on my Kendon trailer. I didn't want to jack up the back of my bike to try to get the rear tire out, so I just removed the fender, which didn't take too long. I didn't know if the front extender would clear my chock or not on my trailer, but it clears it just fine. I had more people in Cortez ask me about where I got my fender extenders than any other farkle on my bike. Larry, I sent them your way!

Lee,

I removed my front fender so that I could clean it well and prepare it for the bonding process. Plus, you want to have plenty of room to put your clamps on the fender while the bonding agent bonds the two pieces together.

I hope you bought the rear extender, too. It is great at keeping some of the gunk off of the rear of the bike. I also removed my rear fender to install the extender. I now have to remove the rear fender for tire changes. Not a big deal to me, though. I like doing the job right.

Great question. Yes, it will clear the front chock on a Kendon. I have a Kendon and have put my bike on it with the fender extenders. It clears just fine.

The other extenders you see for sale are not long enough to do anything.

Once Blues extender is on, it looks good. You barely notice it, but once you do, it matches the shape of the fender and goes well with the bike. Five out of five stars.

I'd give him 6, out of five, if he'd make one for the ninja 1000.

I used a product to glue mine on called "shoe goo" Wal Mart has it in the shoe section. It was on for two years.

Later,    I had the opportunity to get  a brand new, never used front fender, so I paid the 10.00 asking price at the local shop.  This meant I had to transfer my old extender over.

Three hours later, I had sanded the old fender from the extender. I could not break the bond, no way, no how.

I'll 3rd this.
I think the Blue One front Extender is the best available.

Haven't bought his rear yet, as I just don't like the looks on the rear of the bike.
   (Sorry Larry)
But, I have heard it does a good job. So I keep considering it..

Hi there Blue One,

What are your prices ?  I definitely would like to get the front one and maybe the back one too later, unless you sell them as a package deal.  What about shipping ?  I'm in New Brunswick, Canada.  It would probably be cheaper to put them on the bus rather than through Canada Post... or maybe not, I'm sure you know much more about shipping than I do.

Thanks

Suz

Wanted to add my 2 cents. I have one.
This extender helps protect the radiator more than others I've seen.
Stops the rocks that may damage it, and keeps the road debris out of the fins, to help keep the motor cooler.
Iiiii like it!

A recent problem a fellow encountered with installation leads me to this post.

These extenders fit very well and at this point there are many hundreds of them in service all over the globe.

The type of glue is important, as using ABS specific glue is the only way to ensure a successful and reliable install. The stock fender is made of ABS plastic as is my fender extender.

The technique of installing is as important. An adequate amount of ABS cement must be applied to both surfaces.

Before installing it is a good idea to cover the extender and the painted surface of the fender up to where the two pieces meet with blue painters tape to protect them from excess glue.

Then you can apply glue and clamp away.

Any excess glue that may squeeze out can be removed with the tape. That way the fender extender and fender are protected from the glue and clamping process.

Anyone who is not sure on their abilities regarding installation can ship their fender(s) to me for installation. All this will cost you above the cost of the extender(s) is shipping.

I install these for local riders and have had a few shipped to me as well.

Just so you know, that is an option.

I don't include glue, it only takes a small amount. I had thought of supplying glue but could not source it in small tubes to include.

The glue is easily available in most building supply stores in the plumbing department, any brand or color of ABS specific glue (solvent cement) will work.

When you are ready to order just send me a PM.

Absolutely ABS specific , just like chemical welding (solvent bonding). As I said, most installation problems come from the wrong glue or even not using enough glue.
There have actually been very few issues with the installation of these extenders.

So, bought my bike a few days before attending a rally that was situated at the end of a dirt road. I did what I did to get by temporarily and then mounted a radiator guard soon after getting home and sorta forgot about this. Now it's held up almost 8,000 miles and in plenty of pouring rain to boot. I may be willing to upgrade soon. I hear the Maxwell House canisters are thicker :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :D :D :nananana:

Larry.

My order was made on the 22nd and delayed by the heating element going out but its been another week and it hasn't shown up. Did it come back to you by any chance? Every time I hear a "ping" on these dirty Detroit highways I wish I had it.

Not sure if the fender extender would have prevented it (as I think it was a rock from another bike).
But, it sure wouldn't of hurt to have one.
I do. GREAT!!

Thanks Ted.

I actually recommend a good rad screen guard along with my fender extender just for this reason. The fender extender will help protect the rad from debris off the front tire that in some cases can plug up the fins and impede cooling. It will also help protect the lower fairing cowling.

The rad screen guard will protect from flying or bouncing rocks.

Larry has been offered a generous offer from our Marketing Officer to become an Industry Member at no cost for a year at Fais' expense!

The forum subscriber now has the action to officially accept or deny the offer. Some members do not own a Concours, but they value and support the purposes of the club. If Larry accepts the offer or decides to not actively market his offering here at the COG forum, that is entirely his decision now.

Larry did respond that he is a member of another forum and he markets his wares there. I know that most of the COG membership would appreciate his reciprocity here and give him their business.

This thread is locked until we have a decision from Larry.

Thanks guys, now it would be nice if the others would self moderate and remove their posts as asked. I got rid of mine as they are not really relevant to my threads topic  :)

Alan, et al, please go back and edit any derogatory posts about membership, please. That will clean up the thread for our newest IM member.

Thanks! Craig

Keep bumping your thread to maintain awareness.  COGers don't do anything until the last minute, and since many are old enough to retire they need constant reminders.

I'll do that  :great:  Maybe they can remember before they need a new rad and not after  :-[   ;D

I've added a hugger, ... the back tire is ridiculous.

which?
Title: Re: Concours (C14) Fender Extenders Front and Rear

Doesn't matter which one, huggers are all pretty much useless. They may help keep stuff from accumulating towards the front of the rear wheel but do nothing to address the pathetic nature of that tiny triangle that passes itself off as a rear fender.

That's why my rear fender extender is so unique, it turns the fender into an actual functioning unit that helps keep the rear of the bike clean.

Glued mine on with fender right on the bike about 1200 miles ago and while I lost my hat on the expressway today, the extender is holding fine.

At least you didn't lose your head.  Wait a minute  :-[   You said you lost your hat, which must have been stuck someplace on the bike, because surely that head is smart enough to know it should have been inside a helmet.

Might be foolish to ride without a helmet but down here we are free. Freedom to be stupid is awesome. Freedom is whar riding is all about!

I'm free to be stupid in a lot of ways too  :)  There are lots of different ways to be stupid and lots of ways to die too, freedom isn't always a requirement.
I've been in the US where helmets are not required, but I just can't swing my leg over without the helmet on.

I received mine pretty fast and removed the front fender to do the install.

Easy peasy and looks good and I like the extended length to help protect the radiator   :great:  Great job Blue One

I wish you built one for the Ninja 1000. Yes, there is a company who sells extenders, but yours is the only one thats sized, correctly.

Thanks, if I had more time and access to some different models I could make fender extenders for them, as you say sized and styled properly to be functional and to look OEM.

If you happened to build  a ninja 1000 model, it would also fit the zx10r........

I know no one is really into adding weight, to either bike, but your extender is like very much  like having a radiator guard...not having to add that metal guard is a big deal.

Hey Larry, do you make rear wheel "hugger" fenders for the C14? That would be cool. The ones I've seen on other sites are ridiculously expensive.
