New bike, new life
« on: October 14, 2018, 10:00:35 pm »
I’m 47 and have been missing out on the motorcycle world most of my life! Rode a little vacuum cleaner 80cc scooter back in college but that doesn’t count. But it was a glorious day four years ago when the Mrs. finally said, “Why don’t you go get a motorcycle like you’ve always talked about.” I’ve been riding ever since.

First bike: Suzuki SFV650 Gladius. Learning to ride on that was an exhilarating experience. Then two months ago I felt I was ready to step up to a bigger, more solid, touring model. Picked up a beautiful, barely used ‘09 Concours 14. What an amazing machine! It feels like it was made to fly. I felt comfortable on her in no time, and the ABS blew me away.

I’ve laid my Connie down twice, both low-speed falls, simply a lack of throttle/clutch mastery starting out on a tight turn on a heavy bike. I felt much better about these drops when I found guys online with 40+ years who laid down their new, heavy bikes four times in their first month! They first thought they were out of their league, but said something magic eventually happens: you finally ‘get it’, you get over the learning curve, and understand your bike. You bond with it. Then you ‘can’t pry the bike from their cold, dead fingers.’

My first mods were Canyon Cages (which saved my plastics on drop #2) and a custom Hawaiian Ikaika ‘tribal tattoo’ for the front right fairing which I designed and cut in vinyl. I also put on the touring screen and Corbin seat that came with the bike. I look forward to many more mods to get her ready for a big ‘Over the Hill Adventure’ trip I’m planning when I turn 50. I’m thinking Sun Valley, ID or Montana...

I’m excited to be a part of this Concours family.

Thanks, guys! And I hope we meet up too. This is a great forum. Lots of like-minded, cool people who I can glean much info and inspiration from.

I see 2 mufflers on your bike.
What system do you have on it?
Looks similar to the Area P mufflers I have on mine...

Nice work with the vinyl! I'd like to try that, although I 'll never be that creative! Is it a kit you buy or  ?
