New Guy from Eastern PA
« on: January 20, 2017, 05:46:28 pm »
Hello all,

I am a new prospective C10 owner.

I currently have a 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing that is getting a complete makeover (including frame powdercoating, etc.)

I stumbled across a 1992 Concours with 77K on it and it runs! The guy wants pennies for it so I figured it would be a chance to snag it - cheap.

I am going to look at it tomorrow. I plan on doing the test to make sure the rods are not bent and if they are good I will be doing a compression test as well. If all looks good, I will be dragging her home to ad to the stable.

He says the following things are wrong with it;

-Brakes will lock up and not release until the bike sits for a while. He said he replaced the calipers with known good ones and it still happens. Sounds like the master cylinder needs a rebuild.
-Leaking forks. Fork seals will need to be replaced.
-Head shake around 50-60mph. New steering stem bearings most likely.
-Needs tires, oil change, etc. That stuff will be done on any bike I purchase no matter what.

Thanks all!

Will update with pictures if I purchase it.

-Brian

I agree with your potential fixes.  sounds like you are on the right track.  check tire balance and wear relative to the head shake problem.  typically the head tightness causes wobble at 45 mph.

Funny you mention the tire balance and wear. He said the front has bad wear and a slow leak so I'll put a new one on before I condemn the bearings.

your head shake could be due to the tire, or due to the lack of fork oil.  bearings are not a bad idea as well though.  I'd say fix up what you know of and then test it to see how it does.

Yep that's the plan.

When it comes to the bent rod stuff, how little might the cylinders be off? I don't exactly have the most scientific way to measure the differences, i'm just using a straight piece of rod. So for example if they are 1/8" different I may not necessarily notice.
