If it were me, and it has been a time or two... I would do the big miles on the way home and do two days up just so you feel like riding with your friends when you get there.  I can always push it home easier.   I have done a few 800+ mile days and weather, type of roads are a big factor.

My wife and I are current planning our very first COG ride and we cannot decide if we should have a fuel / bathroom / stretch break along the way and if so, how far into the ride. The ride is about 1 1/2 hours and 45 miles through secondary roads.

I would put the break in there. The day is not about making time, it's about making a day out of it. The break will give folks that need it to have it, and for everybody to socialize. It's all good.

I'm meeting some buddies in South Dakota for a few days of riding and I'm considering riding the 940 miles (Boise, ID to Hill City, SD) in one stretch.  I've ridden many days in the 400-500 mile range with the longest being just a hair over 550 miles.  I'm experienced with multi-day rides and I have all the gear, etc. to make the trip but I have no experience riding that far in one stretch without an overnight in between.  I will be riding solo until I arrive in South Dakota and I am leaving the option open to stop part way if I'm too fatigued.

What I would do would be to do a big day first, maybe 6-700 miles, then have a shorter day for meeting up with your friends. And yes, definitely do the Alpine Steakhouse in Hill City.

Also, a lot of folks miss it, but do Vanocker Canyon Road, from north to south, from Sturgis. Yummy, with very little traffic. The model train museum in Deadwood is a hoot. It's all good out there.

The most I've done in a single day is 700 and did my a** hurt! Didn't want to even LOOK at that beast of a bike for days. The route you have chosen, is one I've done a few times, and the only advice I have is to watch for Staters in Wyoming. More than once i have had them do a U turn just to follow me even though I was doing the speed limit.   >:(

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on this LONG ride!  I opted for two, 470-ish mile days instead of one long day.  I believe I probably had the strength and energy to go the distance but I most likely would have missed a lot of the scenery along the way which would have been a shame.  South Dakota was fantastic and the trip between there and Idaho wasn't so bad, either.  Vanocker Canyon Road was AWESOME!  I rode it four times.    :)

On another note, I hear the Connie Droppers Anonymous thread calling my name.

Thanks all!  :motonoises:

Vanocker Canyon Road definitely does not suck.
