ABS thoughts?
« on: December 08, 2012, 12:31:30 pm »
So guys, this is my first ABS bike. I ride in the rain quite a bit, and in very heavy traffic, lane splitting for miles every day. Despite years of practice I still have found myself locking up my rear brake and fish tailing in a panic stop when someone darts across my lane splitting territory. Not often, but still... So as I understand it, this ABS critter distributes braking to both wheels even if I only use either front lever or rear brake peddle alone. Have noticed that the front lever works very well, very smoothly while the rear peddle is very poor, grabby, and releases suddenly just prior to a full stop. And if used together, the poor rear peddle action influences the better front lever action negatively. Is that your experience as well, or should this be a concern for my mechanic?

The ABS system does not distribute braking effects; it only prevents wheel lock-up. In a linked brake system, applying either brake will provide some (but not full) braking effect to the other wheel. If, for example, you apply only the rear brake, you will get full braking effect from the rear brake but only one side of the front brake system will be activated. If you apply only the front brakes, you will get full braking effects from the front brakes but only one pad (presuming it's a two pot brake) of the rear will be activated. I would suggest that you do a complete flush of the rear braking system and see if that resolves your problem.

- use front brake lever only.

- reason : your system is (a) linked and (b) equipped with ABS.

- combining brake lever and brake pedal use on the linked C14 produces some strange braking results.
