some buddies and I were talking about this last night.  I had not seen it on the news and they were filling me in.  85 and 40 are the only corridors east to west in the state so that is a VERY busy section of interstate in that area where they come together.  It's hazard enough just to stop on an interstate, but there's no way I'd stop in that area.  Not sure if they were just taking a break, or if it was some type of breakdown/emergency.  Hopefully more info will come out in the days ahead.  either way, it's a sad thing.   :(

Highway shoulders are anything but a safe place to stop. I recall in the past 10 or 15 years at least a half dozen CT State Troopers struck by motorists during highway shoulder stops.

In a pinch, wide on ramp shoulders  can be a little bit better. A GPS can usually show if the off ramp will lead directly to an on ramp as opposed to a no re-entry situation.

(Hope this isn't a hijack but it's a funny story relative to this topic)

I had a flat in downtown Atlanta at rush hour (5:00 pm) one day but unfortunately traffic was MOVING and I had no place to exit and the berm was edged by a wall. Not good.  >:( So, in about 30 seconds, I was making like a NASCAR pitcrew changing the tire with cars going, zoom-zoom-zoom by me,  when I heard a voice say "Excuse me.."
(This was back during the heyday of "Touched by an Angel" the tv show which I dearly loved to watch.)

I looked up and saw a beautiful  old lady dressed all in white standing next to me with her hands folded! I said, "WHAT??" :-\ (At least she wasn't wearing red or black..  ;D  but, I thought I was DEAD already...).

nen I looked past her and saw that her husband had stopped the car on the interstate and had sent her to ask DIRECTIONS of me at RUSH HOUR IN ATLANTA!! (6 lanes, high speed) and she had walked up to me while he sat in the Buick. I didn't see her 'cause I was totally into the fastest tire change in my life and certainly didn't hear or expect her.

I was already terrified about getting hit, but at least I was on the wall side of the berm. I think I sort of yelled at her, "Lady, you're gonna get KILLED!" Then she looked scared. But, I told her where to go (no, not to that place-where they were trying to get to) and suggested that she have her husband get a running start on the berm and FLOOR it as he merged. She & he seemed to go by me on two wheels but didn't get hit. I finished the tire and did likewise.

People get killed on the side of the freeway all the time... I was lucky that day that I was not "Touched by an Angel" in downtown Atlanta, GA.

In places i saw in SC, all the debris on the shoulders alone would kill a motorcyclist trying to pull over  :o

I know what you mean. I had to walk a half mile along the interstate a year or so ago to fetch some airline stock. The amount of trash over the bank was incredible.

When you are in a cage, it is safer to drive your flat tire down to the rim, then stop on the narrow should to change your tire.

 One of my pet peeves.
It isn't that hard or far to pull over at the next safe place.
I have had ride leaders pull over with several bikes behind them on a narrow road edge and even have the whole group do a u turn!  :-[
I will often ride past to the safe pull out and wait.

People will drive where they look, at times right under a semi trailer parked on the shoulder. :(

I don't think the curve in this particular situation played a part in the accident. They weren't in the blind section and fully visible. The initial investigate is that the trucker fell asleep at the wheel. Plowed through them and kept going quite a ways.

I travel 95 between Smithfield and Fayetteville on Saturday's and Sunday's. It's amazing the number of bikes I see stopped on the side of a 2 lane interstate just taking a break, smoking, joking and generally f****** up traffic. Wanna know what happens when you park 10 or 20 bikes on the side of the interstate? It backs up traffic and makes for a generally dangerous situation, there's a reason it's against the law. If you stop on the side of the interstate and its not an emergency that prevents you from reaching the nearest rest area, pull-off or exit, you are an a******. Unfortunately, some people pay dearly for stupidity, as in the case. This kind of self centered, I'm the most important person in the world and I'm gonna do what I want s*** is an epidemic, I see it everyday.

Which is exactly why the curve played a part. Driver falls asleep, vehicle continues straight and the road curves, vehicle leaves the road. I had a close friend killed on the side of the road because he stopped to help someone. Stay off the side of the road.
