Brrrrr Ride [VA] Nov 8-11, 2018
« on: June 14, 2018, 03:05:13 pm »
Never too early to start dreaming!  Please join us for the annual NE Brrrr Ride.  See Calendar entry here: http://www.cog-online.org/clubportal/EventDisplayNew.cfm?clubID=1328&EventID=250886&mo=11&tDate=%7Bd%20%272018%2D11%2D14%27%7D

We will camp at the Natural Bridge KOA (cabins available - recommend early reservations). http://www.koakampgrounds.com/where/va/46144.htm

We usually meet for breakfast and dinner at the Pink Cadillac.  Google Map: https://goo.gl/maps/KDJpvPoTVq32  Pick Cadillac web site:  http://www.pcdinerva.com/

Organized rides are planned for Friday (11/9/18) and Saturday (11/10/18).

If you''re not interested in camping the closest motel is the Budget Inn, 4331 South Lee Highway, Natural Bridge, VA (540-291-2896)

Stay tuned to the Forum for news on the “Buckwheat Pancake Breakfast Benefit” held annually in Blue Grass – we expect it to be held Sunday (11/11/18), but their schedule is not yet firm.

For some strange reason, i was looking at the campgrounds on Google maps in satellite view, and see they have really increased their camper and RV capacity exponentially... and also see that if you ride to the N.W. end of the back road, you could literally walk thru the field, a few (about 200) yards from it, to a new brewery.. hmmmmm...
it's actually closer than both the gas station, and the Pink Cadillac in terms of walking. ( that ought to make Jason happy).

no affiliation, but it looks interesting... and sure beats the gas station carry out selections...  :rotflmao: :beerchug: :great:

We are on!! :great:

Stopped by and checked out the KOA --- no damage from Hurricane Florence and all is good.

In addition to the new brewery  :beerchug: (which although very close --- you can NOT walk to it) there is

ta da ... https://halcyondayscider.com/ located 0.4 miles up from standard eatery the Pink Cadillac Diner http://pcdinerva.com/

Easy walk to Pink Cadillac --- then to Halycon Cider ... might be tough going back!!  ;)

More gouge on Halcon Days Cider:

Short extract:
NATURAL BRIDGE — The apple trees at Halcyon Days Cider Co. aren’t planted in classic straight rows. Instead, they wind around a small hill in an elaborate labyrinth.

Come Friday, Halcyon Days Cider will see its first visitors wandering through its 11-acre property. The cidery, celebrating its opening this weekend, is the first in Rockbridge County and one of few in Southwest Virginia.

Owner Larry Krietemeyer based the orchard’s labyrinthine design on one set into the stone floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France. The Chartres labyrinth is one of the most famous in the world, drawing visitors to pray and meditate as they walk the path.

Is there a group rate for camping?  I just called the KOA and it will be $105 for three nights of camping in a tent.

TIA.
Yeah, if you want true ram air tuning, you better be willing to ram some air! (SiSF)

Hmmn, don't really know since so few camp {vs cabin}. Try asking Koa for the COG rate - we have been going there for some 14+ years - they should shave something. Interested in what they tell you.

I think that price was for the "improved" campsites, up near the top, with the square sandy tent sites..
Last time I camped there, we didn't have the money for the close sites, so we did the "remote" camp sites, own over the hill, by the vollyball court, in the field, and they only charged $25 for Friday/Saturday nights total...
I was a 'timing thing" tho, if you had to make an emergency run to the bathroom, so you had to plan accordingly.... as walking up and over the hill took a bit of time, and riding up and around to get up top, was a couple minute trip...  but it was very quiet and peaceful down there, and being the low spot, we got a good covering of "frost"... :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

EDIT;

https://goo.gl/maps/kj1SrFNyMqp

just looked again on satellite view, and that spot is now RV camping... they really changedd the campgrounds it seems... but that brewerry is still, just 200 yards from the end of the back road, across the open field... wayyyy closer than walking to the cider place, or the Cadillaac.....

Thanks Rich. Gonna head over to AR instead to look at all of the purty leaves and break in a new rear tire. Probably Eureka Springs area and then maybe head over to Clinton to see what kind of trouble I can get into with some COGgers gathering there.

Bike is packed, heading out at 1100 tomorrow. Looking forward to a nice trip.

If you haven’t been to the KOA in awhile you will see major changes, new bath house, camping meadow is gone, more RV sites, several more “fancy” cabins, etc.

Brewery is really good but you cannot get there via the direct route though the field, there is a cow pasture with a fence.

I wasn't there personally, but Greg wrote this up for the NE COG newsletter.   :great:  :motonoises:

Though the BRRR Ride is no longer an official COG event, it was attended by mostly COG members, about 20 in number. The ride down to Natural Bridge on Thursday was outstanding. Russell Fleming led a small group on a 300 mile trek that featured one great back road after another. Friday it rained, and while many went for a ride, not yours truly, most came back wet and cold, with tales of heavy rain and poor visibility. But Saturday the sun came out and the wind dried the roads off and was a fine day to ride. On the Blue Ridge Parkway, we stopped to celebrate Russell's C-14 turning over 100,000 miles-only 150,000 to go to catch up to his C-10!
The Pink Cadillac Restaurant did a good job of providing most of our breakfasts and dinners, while the hike to and from the camp ground provided plenty of exercise. So much so that some folks were looking at the newly remodeled motel that shares the parking lot with the restaurant. Other advantages of moteling it include a level place to park a motorcycle, and not tripping over tree roots during those night time jaunts to the bath house when nature calls.
On Sunday morning, as we headed for home, the BRRR Ride lived up its name by sending us off in 20 degree, but sunny, weather. A very fine weekend indeed!

Glad to hear that, I was in the Snow belt also....

That hotel became a pretty "ok" deal for both Jay and I, as we both shared a room a few times there, after a particularly wet camper cabin stay one year, where we both decided to run the BRP in the FOG.... and promptly found riding 20 miles with 3 foot visibility pretty much was a bummer.. but we prevailed... the sun came out, and we could see all the deer we missed (literally), and had a great ride...

I do say tho, my last Brrrrrrr, I did tent camp, and it was cold, and the bikes were covered in frost both Saturday, and Sunday mornings....... brrrrrrrrrrr......
