Welcome back little buddy!

I think you bought it because you wanted to reach the ground for once in your life. Not like you're really going to ride it cross country or anything  :nananana:!

Indeed brother, having the Wing will open up some great opportunities to meet you and Big Jim (and our ladies of course) somewhere mid-way geographically between us for some good times!  :great:

As much as I will tease ZG for buying a Wing, my buddy Randy Hubbard has ridden nothing but GL1800s since they came out.  Well, he took a four month trip to the crazy farm two years ago with a new Ultra Classic, but other than that momentary loss of sanity he has ridden Wings.  They haul, they handle (except they can't lean much without dragging everything they got), have tons of storage and gizmos, and they are the barcalounger of the 2 wheel world.  It's true all wive's will want you to get one. In Helen, my wife rode on Hub's Wing Penthouse rather than the back of the Turbo with me... go figure.  I find it tough to believe the BMW can really compete in the real world.  But I have not ridden the Beemer and I have spent a fair bit of time on Hub's Wing so I suppose anything is possible.

I have the k1200lt. you may have seen it at the national. I really like the bike, it handles well  and it gets smokin' fuel economy. I generally average mid 40's 2 up. I was pretty surprised at it up there at the national, you can tell it was built for roads like those. And they're inexpensive compared to a comparable year wing. Steve

Steve, is that motor a "boxer" type motor? When I went to Europe a few years... has it been almost 13 years ago? Anyway, I had to ride a Beemer on the tour. It was an 1150 RS and it had the "boxer" motor. It was a pretty new bike too with only about 200 kilometers on it. It shook me so hard that it would put my right hand to sleep before lunch. By the time I got home my hand was so messed up that it took a month before it returned to normal. (bike burned a LOT of oil too) I scratched the Beemer off my list of bikes to own after that experience. I don't know, maybe I was already spoiled by that smooth flat 6 in my Wing. (???)

My neighbor had a LT just like Steve's.  only oil burning it did was when parked on the kickstand because of oil seeping past the rings.  slight puff on start up, but otherwise no issue.  parking on center stand was not a problem.

it rode and drove great.  he and I did and iron butt ride together.  his cruise was great to set the pace so I didn't have to pay so much attention to the speedo.  he and is wife did several trips from NC up to Wisconson.  Another friend of ours had a newer version of it and when we would do WV or western NC trips, he didn't have a problem keeping up with me on my C10.  they handle pretty well.

the only issue I ever had with them was the cost of service/parts.

THe newest Beemers I have been on have been the 1050 lt and 1150 lt... I was not impressed.  Also spent a short ride on a new 1600.  It did not even compare to the previous bikes, or I should say they could not compare to it.  But it still didn't feel "nice" to me.  Very much smoother though.  Again, not enough time to develop a real "feel" for it I reckon.  The Wing, on the other hand, you hop on and go.  The low mass and good geometry and ergos make it just kinda hard to beat in the Luxo-Tourer category... at least for me.  And it looks OK too. I might ride a WIng if I didn't try to tear the pipes off just going to the corner store.   Lil bitty Hub, on the other hand, can hustle that behemoth around right smartly and manages to NOT drag stuff.

Dan,

A fellow rider around here, Frank Tabor, rode his KLR650 from here to the northern tip of Alaska... and then turned south and rode it all the way to the southern tip of south America. I googled him and foundhttp://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/tabor/cat_deadhorse_alaska.php] http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/tabor/cat_deadhorse_alaska.php  When I first met him he rode a Connie and was a COG member. I think he has a Tiger now. Haven't seen him in a while.

Here's a ZG-level project for the Wing.  Saw this at H&W Powersports in Texarkana yesterday.

  Jerry,

That was a KLR. Much more suitable for long road work. Not saying some can't do it on a 'dirt bike with plates', buttttt buttttt oweee. LOL
Yes rode my '00 KLR on a 6400 mil adv ride, my current '08 KLR 5500 mile 16 continuous days (AZBDR/UTBDR) going to AZ then riding off pavement as much as possible with the group all the way north thru Utah and of course back home to WA state, And many more adventures.
It can be done but more difficult on some bikes. One of the reasons I now have a 2016 Africa Twin tho heavier for off pavement.

You guys are hijacking the thread  :rotflmao:

We really should be giving advice on tires, oil, fuel octane and such. I'll start with tires. Stay away from Metzlers- unless you like replacing them every 4000 miles. Feel real sticky first 2000 miles but cup about that point then just wear out while the bike is parked. I liked Michelins but also had good luck with Dunlops; "D" series And whitewalls only work with SISF's new toy

I've only run 87 Octane in my GL1800s and (typically) would get 42-44 mpg (2-up w/o the camper trailer, drops to about 35-38 with the camper due to aerodynamic drag).

I've had real good service from the Dunlop Elite 3 series of tires (except they "howl" in the corners) and also Avon Cobras.

Working on one is kind of a PITA due to the amount of body work you have to remove to get to stuff, oil filter and drain plug excepted. Much like the C14 in that respect.

Good for you ZG.  I'll bet it will be one of the best bikes you have ever owned.

I had a Wing for over 30 years and the low center of gravity of the engine makes it very well balanced.
Not in any way top heavy like a Connie.

One of the very few bikes to have reverse is a real plus - As that is one feature that I wish I had on my wing.

Plenty of Farkles are available for a Wing so Jay will be busy for awhile.

Would like to see more than one or two pictures of it.  Guess Jay will have to make a separate PhotoBucket account for the Wing.  ;D
