Title: 2018 National Rally - The Three Sisters Rally Kerrville, TX - SC
Post by: S Smith on March 04, 2017, 11:56:04 am
The club has had a tradition of announcing next year's rally dates to allow folks to pencil it in and plan vacation as needed.  A little birdie has told me the dates for the 2018 COG National Rally will be June 11 - 14, 2018.

Sure... dates depend greatly on organizer, venue availability and pricing, weather, and other things. Here is a chronology of past national rallies.

I see a trend since I joined in fall 2013.  Someday I'll retire and be free in June.

Hmmm... Monday thru Thursday. Interesting.

Now that I am retired I have the time off to go. But now I have different limitations.   :-[

Will have to play it by ear. Lots of time between now and then.

June works for me! (I don't hold vacation in mid July or August yet with 30 plus years of service and less than 5 years away from retirement.)

I think the trend toward June is driven by pricing at the venues.  Most all venues go way up in July and August since they can get it.  That is why school needs to be year round but allowed to miss one month a year.  Then maybe the prices would not jump.

That and even more so the tendency to be somewhat less HOT in June almost anywhere in the country.

I find it interesting that the OP gave me some static about hosting the 2016 National in June, yet the next two are also being held in June. Something regarding school still being in session. The majority of the GA schools get out around Memorial Day and start back around the first week of August. If a National was held in August, we probably wouldn't attend as my better half would be back in school.

Weather, Location, Cost, Availability. The 4 cards in the deck. Shuffle as you see fit. Some of these are the same card with 2 sides just to mess with your head. We going NE in 18 Steve? The rumor mills are running full tilt. I'm gonna have to buy tires dammit. And get my Jersey turn pike pass.  :beerchug: :)

Mark, with you being on the Board, you should know where it is being held, right??

If I have to ride through NY or NJ, we'll probably pass on 2018. But if it is in VA/WV/PA, we will probably attend.

just to counter-balance Kurt  :nananana:  if we do it in the NE, I'd say the farther north the better.  I've never ridden that area of the country, so getting to see more of it would be nice.  besides, if it IS NE, I KNOW Denise will make every effort to get out of work to go.   :)

NE eh?

I realize that Canada is out for logistical and legal reasons, what with border crossings, passport requirements etc. (and also for you gun-totin' folks  :truce:)  but some where northerly (Upstate NY, VT, or NH) would be awesome.  This is strictly selfish on my part, since the extra days riding to/from the rally (when it was further away) made it a no-go for me.  However my gain would be someone else's pain...  :( )

Though it can be scenic...

Oh well....

"YES"!!!  Someone put it on, and folks will be there!

By the way.
COG National; June 11 - 14, 2018 (somewhere)
We'll be there!!

Ride safe, Ted  (retired)

PS: Is it too early to start guessing where it will be?
      I suggest West Coast!!
If so, {Sport Rider} Denise can fly in...

Route choices have me choosing between Shreveport or New Orleans on the trip over. What kind of choice is that??

I would say it depends on the Journey.

Staying at Breaux Bridge or Lafayette overnight is a great experience for LA food, I 10 through Houston and then San Antonio to Kerrville is not bad.

Coming through I20 to DFW, you  do not want to take I35 to San Antonio. I have a great route from DFW on back roads, it is about 5 hours from DFW to the YO. We will have the routes in *.GPX and other formats soon.

There are many roads in the Hill Country besides the Three Sisters that are technical and challenging.

Let me know what you want to experience on the Journey!

June average for Kerrville is 89 degrees F for the high.

There's ridging in the latter part of the week this week so the temps are above normal.

Maybe the glass is half full? ;D

I've been to 3 in a row - all AWESOME!

Missed this year - I'm sure it was great.

Won't make next year - I'm sure it will be great, too  :great:

I just can't get my helmet on if temps are above 85* while humidity is above 60%:-/ Luckily, others are better riders than me in this regard.

This was originally a COG listserv post circa early 2000’s written by Bob Chappell, COG 1283. I feel there is value to toss this out there every so often. The rally list has been updated to reflect all to the present. National rally history can also be found the club web site. FWIW - Bob's post was the inspiration for my sig tag line.

Quote from: Bob Chappell
Note: The following is not intended to rekindle any hot debates over when/where COG National Rallies should be held, but is presented for informational purposes only. With all the banter about the time-of-year and location of COG Nationals, I thought the following might be of interest. Listed are the National Rallies held (& to be held) from 1990 through present.

Once upon a time, COG tried to appease everyone by holding a “National Rally Series” every year, covering the Eastern, Central and Western parts of the country, and spanning the calendar from Spring until Autumn. If memory serves, this got to be an extremely heavy burden to bear on an annual basis, so Nationals were cut back to one a year – with a notable exception in 2000. Why a "rolling rally" that year? Because the enthusiasm and volunteerism where present to support the concept. Note the number of National Rallies since 1990. How many other motorcycle organizations like COG can make that claim?

Since COG Nationals have been promoted as family events, it's only logical that they be held during the summer months. As far as location... Well, if we don't raise our hands and shout, “ME, ME!”, we shouldn't expect to see a National in our neck of the woods, nor complain when it's not.

And that's all I have to say about that. For now  :-)

1990: Colorado Springs, CO, September.
1991: Cody, WY. July
1992: Eastern National, Front Royal, VA to Asheville, NC, early May.
Western National, Banff, AB, Canada, late June.
1993: Eastern National, North Carolina, May 17-21.
          Western National, Colorado, August 9-13.
          Central National, Wisconsin, October 1-3.
1994: Central National, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, May 2-6.
Western National, Sonora, California, August 8-12.
1995: Eastern "'94 in '95", Tennessee, May 23-27.
          Western National, Oregon, July 24-28.
          Central National, Ohio, September 6-10.
1996: “Ride the Rockies”, Avon, Colorado, August 5-9.

2007: “COG in Canaan”, Canaan Valley, WV August 7-12.
2008: “COG @ 10,000”, Frisco, CO, June 2-6.

But my Wingman, Hub, still lives there.   ;)

And he has a bigger shop than I do.   >:D

And he was hopin' the National would be 2000 miles away since he plans to go next year. (I called and said, "Hey, are you going to make the National next year with me?"  He said, "Dang skippy I is!"  THen I told him it was a couple miles from his porch.    :D

I've enjoyed almost everywhere I've ever ridden, but Texas Hill Country still rocks my world.  I'd seriously consider returning there to retire... well, if I ever get a job again so I CAN retire someday.   ::)

I highly suggest that folks make the Nimitz Museum a destination while at next years rally.

When I became and AD I found out quick I should not put a post up here till I read it like the other guy reads it first.  I think all of us could live by that.  If you don't want it said to you or about you then just hit backspace till you don't.

1200 miles one way for me.
I think I can fit a small A/C unit in my saddle bag and plumb a flexible hose to the spacesuit I will need to buy.

Question is...which suit to buy?

Harry, pic ! looks like the sturdiest helmet, but lace up boots!!?  I'd opt for #2, has better visibility.  #3 looks like a gray Michelin Man....

the lace up boots and more importantly,  the lack of visibility in the helmet kill #1 for me.

Ok, everyone chill!!
Lets talk about something of interest to all of us.
For instance,,, Harry Martin's {Martian} suit..

____________________________________________________________________

Harry, "Old Buddy"...
I suggest you choose suit #1 and turn the helmet around backwards...   :nananana:
On the air conditioner, I suggest you put some ice cubes in your shorts...   :great:

Glad I could help!   :)
______________________________________________________________________

"Now", as much as I enjoyed that;
(on this discussion we are supposed to be talking "ABOUT" the 2018 National).
                  So, "I" will!

I'm excited about the National being in Kerrville next year. (It's close to me!!)
Those of you that have been posting the distance to Kerrville, are forgetting that we've been traveling similar distances to the Nationals for years.

There ya go.
I talked about the 2018 National and it was positive... glass / "half full"..     <grin>

Ride safe, Ted

Harry, talk to Marty Cobb. He has a Veskimo, which I'm sure he'll be wearing to next year's national rally if he goes.

I typically ride through the summer of our beloved blast furnace in Texas. When I ride, I try to get going early - by 7:00 AM at least and try to be done by noon before the thermometer reaches 5,000 degrees. If I do ride longer than that, I try to stay indoors in air conditioning during the afternoon until the thermometer gets down below 5,000 degrees for the ride home.

People joke about dry heat versus a humid heat. Personally, I'd much rather ride in 100 degree heat with less than 10% humidity than 80 degrees with greater than 80% humidity any day of the week. It makes a huge difference to me. You do have to stop more frequently for water breaks in that kind of heat or you'll dehydrate pretty quickly. I am in complete agreement with Fais on the humidity factor.

OK, here's a little info and a thought;
   I joined COG in 2000.
Went to my first National in 2002 {Montrose Colorado}, expecting cooler weather than Houston.. (100+*).
This year I went to Missouri expecting cooler weather than Houston.. (92+*).

You might wonder,, what's my point..
That's EZ;   "it's summertime".. It can be hot "anywhere".
Dress for the heat and c'mon down.
         We'll be glad to see all of ya.  {err, Except for Harry}

Think of it this way; When winter comes and your a_____e deep in snow, you can remember the nice heat you had in Texas!!

Glad I could help.   :great:

The thunderstorms across the states are going to catch up with me one of these days. I'm kind of thinking fly and hang with my kin folk for a week instead of the 2K trek on the bike. I just wanted to make a comment about this rally and location.

Yes it sucks to have it in summer(late spring).  Chances are though that even less people could make it if we had it in spring or fall with the school year, snow up north and other holidays.  The chances of weather making a mess of everything in spring and fall is much greater also.

Distance is something we all deal with.  I opted out of Vermont because it was just to far for us that year.  It is a personal choice.  They about MAKE us have a rally in every area of COG even the SC.  We only have two really good riding areas.  The last one in 2012 was as far north as we could make it.  That area is only about 170 miles from this years rally.  Central Texas in June is almost the only choice they had.  I am sure it will be a smaller rally but for those that make it I would think the team will do everything in their power to make it a great rally.

There is not a single COG member that lives within a 100 miles of the rally site.  That is about the same as 2012.  I planed that rally from 600 miles away.   No members lived close.   Our biggest regional rallies usually only have about 25 SC attendees.   It is not easy for us to support a national rally and form a strong team.  We may have to have help from other areas.  It will happen though because we all do not want to go to the same place every year and we all don't want to have to go 1500 miles every year.  That is why the rally moves, so you can see and be someplace new.  I go out of my way to see new stuff all the time.

Ya'll come if you can.   I may not even be able to make it because of my retirement trip but I am sure the guys holding the rally will do their best to make it worth the trip.

I'm looking at flights, too. For the wife, for the wife!! Closest airport is San Antonio, 63 miles. Now, just gotta figure how to get her from the airport to Kerrville (and back!). Haven't decided yet if I'm gonna ride out or, GASP!, trailer.  :-\ Don't hate me...at least I plan to be there!

Oh yeah, the only National I've missed since '07 was Cortez. And they all were hot (warmish) except Frisco ('08). Even Tomah,WI had 104 heat indexes!

It looks like I've got a "go" on this already. My wife this morning posted this on the Book of Faces along with a picture of the nearby Presbyterian retreat (she's a minister like Rev):

"Ed's motorcycle rally is in Kerrville, TX next year. I will go with and surely head to Mo Ranch. I miss this special place."

I suspect that we'll trailer so we can swap off driving. I'm OK with that. It'll give her wheels to make her side trip.

Eddie and Ed, we may have to tag team up. My wife is a trooper, but if not for the smart phone, she'd have gone nuts on the trip to Missouri. She flew to Durango and I picked her up @ 1:00 am and took her to Cortez. Nowhere to fly to in Missouri, so she drove with me. I can't decide (yet) if I'm hauling the bike and staying in a hotel or hauling the trailer and camping. But there's time....

Maybe there's a new article for the wives: "COG Air Travel Stories."

Ed, MoRanch is a special place to us as well.  My wife was Executive Administrative Assistant to the President (what a title) there for 10 years that David Jordan was the president.  In fact, if you call Mo Ranch, it's still her voice that answers the phone system though she's been gone from there for around 9 years.  The current president was my roomie in seminary at Austin too.  My wife can outrun anyone on that road. Eddie, the cheapest way I can think of is to get her an Enterprise Rent A Car at the airport.  She can return it in Kerrville for the week and then get another to return if she wants.  They are pretty reasonable.  No one could make the trip to get her much cheaper.  But if that's what someone wants, I'm betting it can be figured out.  I might be able to help.  My wife will be there with her car I'm sure and that is our old stompin' grounds (lived in Kerrpatch for 20 years almost). There's always a way.

We could squeeze 1 or 2 in the truck. I'm sure others can too..
Several COGgers live in the San Antonio area too.

I'll mention that to her. Small world, but I guess I should not be surprised since Laurie spent over 20 years in Texas, with most of that in San Antonio. She was Laurie Spencer then, and was married to Blake Spencer, another minister. Don't know if either of those names ring a bell to you or your wife.

I just told Dolores about this and she said she'd love to take Laurie to Mo. She says those names sound familiar but doesn't really know them.  The pastor and associate at Kerrville are good friends.  I gave up a position at FPCkerrville so that Rob could be hired back in 03 (I was going to seminary in 04 anyway) and then I took the associate on mission trips when she was in middle and high school before that time.  I told her I figured she'd go to seminary some day... now she's back there as a pastor.    :D

We'll be packing up the Rollin' Ramada and heading to the national in 2018. Hopefully the younger crew will be with us as well. We can't miss the get together with Snarf and wife and maybe some on the NE crew. We've missed one rally in the last several years in Idaho because we were closing on our house. Gonna try to make this one.  Shoulder may not be better for fall, so I'll save my money for this one.  First National for me.

Old Man are you riding?  Trailering?  Flying?  I will be riding and I need some good routes from about Las Cruces down to Kerrville.

This thread is a tad too quiet so I thought I'd spruce it up a bit.  Remember, I said we'd be getting the band together again... Well, last year at the National we sang that wonderful ditty, "COG Riding Girls" (to the tune of California Girls) and since that time I've been working on a little more material for upcoming gigs.  There are some old works and some new works in the pantry for the album "Blue is the Color of my True Love's Tupperware."
So, right now there are also these "can't hit" wonders for consideration from Rev Ryder and the Revenuers Iron Butt Blues Review:

Evil Tires (to Santana's Evil Ways)
Centerstand (to the Beatles' Yesterday)
Honkin' Conk Blues (to Pirates of the Mississippi's Honky Tonk Blues - a Hank Williams ripoff)
A Little Hard on the Knees (to Joe Cocker's version of You Are So Beautiful)
COGcaine (naturally it's to Clapton's classic, Cocaine)
How Can You Mend a Hydrolock (a ridiculous rip from the Zee Gees that puts the "false" in falsetto)
The Sport Touring COG Blues  (just a typical 8 bar blues with a coast to coast travelin' story line)
Chain Chain Chain - Chains are for Fools (an Aretha Franklin embarrassment)
One More Ride (a Phil Collins train robbery and wreck in the key of H+# just try to find a harmonica that can work with that)
Free Fallin' (an epic "Pin them Bags" Tribute to Tom Petty)
Sultan of Swingarms (yes, even Dire Straits' straits are more dire than anyone thought)
Can't Tour This  (an MC Hammer rewrite. This song postponed until I can find the correct mesh pants and boots for the inevitable music video)
You Laid Down Connie (another Slowhand great gone down for the third time in the parking lot)
KiPass (to the tune medley of Born Free/Rock of Ages)
In the Tank Bag (to the Tokens' The Lion Sleeps Tonight)
Murphskits Shad Mounts (to the tune of Journey's Sister Christian)
And much, much more.

Early reviews are encouraging...
"Pop music never rolled so many eyes nor caused so many groans." Rolling Stove Magazine
"What the %$@# was that?!?"  Jeffy Hulbert aka TurboMax
"I never heard anything quite like that before!" Mike Jagger (Rev's neighbor)
"You're kidding me... you're actually going to get this recorded?"  Rev's mom in an exclusive interview.
You won't want to miss any of it.

Good Call Jim, you nailed it, that is exactly what it is.  Slowhand = Eric Clapton.
But it's a rant song rather about a love that's hard to steer at slow speeds.  It was written and recorded ten years ago and spent most that time on Peter Hobday's (aka Hogboy) webpage.  However, those pages have more recently disappeared and the material appears lost. There were probably 40+ COG songs there that we collaborated on or did independently.  Some of them were really really creative, some were less so... but all were intended to be fun and expound upon some experience or characteristic that was identifiable as common to Concours owners/riders.
Lyrics for this song's first verse (to the tune Lay Down Sally) :
Quote
There is nothing that is wrong
With wanting to maneuver through a parking lot.
I know you like a frisky gait,
And that the guy who hesitates is gonna lose... and now I'm singing the blues.
You laid down Connie, all I did was touch the brake
Now everyone's just standin' here a gawkin'.
You laid down Connie, such manners I can't take
And here you lie the crosswalk you're a blockin'.

I tried arranging an early {Sat} arrival myself.
Even tried to talk them into it "at ' the "YO" while we were there last month.
Nooo way a room will be available on Sat. {as another event is going on}.

Every year, COG has an event down the road in Hunt Texas {at the River Inn}.
Everyone {including our wife's} like the River Inn!!
If some want to arrive a day early, that might be a good pre-National option...    :06:

Are you talking about Sunday, June 10th?  If so, I just spoke with our contact at the YO last week, and there were still a number of our blocked rooms available.  Make sure when contacting them, that you inform them that you are with COG.  If you still have a problem getting a room on Sunday the 10th, let me know.

Others are available in the area, including a bike friendly place...

I'm all set too. Got reservations starting on Sunday and just now signed up for the rally. Got the hat too. The last hat I bought that cost that much was a Stetson.   ;)  Maybe I'll bring it along too.  It ought to look right at home in Texas.   :)

Rev,

Unknown at this point in time. My wife *may* ride with me as far as Tulsa to visit a friend there while I am at the rally. If she does I won't have room in the roadster for my guitar. I doubt she'd want to hold it in her lap all the way to Tulsa. She hasn't made a commitment to the trip yet, so a solid plan B is probably warranted.   ;)

Thanks!

Not a problem... Ship it!!!

[And that's how the fight started]...

{Glad I could help}   :great:

Ride safe, Ted

I'm not going to ship my guitar anywhere. Period   :-X

I need to talk to Bob this Saturday at our monthly breakfast, but he may be willing to help me get my guitar to the rally.

Stay tuned.   ;)

I know the stores and manufacturers ship them all the time, but that's before "I" own them.  I'd never ship one I liked and why ship one you don't?  I have no good luck at shipping anything I'm really fond of or that is valuable.  If you can transport it somehow, great.  If not, we'll manage.   :beerchug:

I havent registered yet cause I'm trying to decide if I should grab a tent site or try and share a room.

If I camp, I probably need to bring an air conditioner and maybe 100' of extension cord.
I havent reserved a room and I don't know anyone willing to put up with my snoring.

This is what I get for not planning sooner.

Any suggestions at this point? :banghead: :017:

Coopers BBQ in Llano is on one of the loop rides. That loop has some great scenery, curves, and is on open range land where you can never say "Where's the Beef??!!!?!"

You can smell their pits from miles away!!!!! ;D

There's also a variant to this route if you don't want to drive back through Fredericksburg.

There are lot's of great BBQ joints in Texas, Cooper's is a rite of passage for the meat lover.....and be sure to leave a little room for the great cobblers! :13:

It's a great thing that on the way back, you don't have to roll down any windows on a motorcycle!!!!!!!!......and take advantage of the extra thrust provided!!!!!! :rotflmao:

You may have noticed that the Routes for the 2018 COG national have been posted here (http://concours.org/national/2018-national-rally/routes). These are the routes that will have black and white printouts available at the National. You are encouraged to print out your own at home if you desire that they be in color.  To keep costs down only 7 routes have been selected for printing. Probably 90% of the riding will be on the Sisters, but there are five alternatives if desired. The Google Drive link at the bottom of this post has those, plus additional routes that didn’t make the cut.

In the link below you will also find larger maps (most 22” x 36”) to facilitate closer study and some videos.  The maps generally will be clearest if downloaded on a PC and opened with your own copy of Adobe.  The videos are just stop action photos taken from Google Street View photos by online software. They are full of glitches, with occasional sideways shots or white blanks. Since they are based on Google Street Views, there are some where the camera is going in the wrong lane for direction of travel because the Google Car actually was going the other way when photographing the road. Sometimes the weather or even the season will change right in the middle of the route. There is one video where you are proceeding in clear weather and then it’s raining at an intersection and then clear again on the other side. These imperfect videos should be good enough to give you some idea of what the roads are like. In my experience, after downloading they are best viewed with DVD type software that will give you good speed control to speed them up a bit, 2X or 4X speed seemed to me to work best. If you watch them without downloading, the Google drive viewer will let you speed them up to 2X. The videos are all .avi files. They may give you a headache at slower speeds. Apologies.

Additional routes will be added later as I get to it. Notably there will be a modified version of the South State Parks Loop because one of the parks is only open one day during our event.  I’ll have a shorter version of that route eliminating that park. I will also add what I call Dash routes that are destination oriented routes that generally take the fastest most direct route to a particular destination that may be of interest. Generally these short routes won’t be much different than if you had put in the destination into your GPS and hit  GO. These would be more for those not familiar with the area and don’t have a GPS.

I’m not sure how much Dual Sport interest there is, but I have made a couple of dual sport routes which are about 75% pavement. They have not been ridden by me, and are armchair created using BaseCamp and input from Richard Gibbens’ Hill Country Adventure, a guide to adventure riding in the Texas hill country. Link-->http://www.texasadventure.net/ (http://www.texasadventure.net/)

I’m no BaseCamp guru by any means, but I hope that with SCAAD Butch Youngblood’s eagle eyed assistance we have eliminated all the route glitches that were so prevalent on many routes I’ve taken in the past (mine and other’s).  Please note route errors here for everyone to see, so we can put up a corrected version.
Thanks.

                                               508
508 is the magic number. That’s correct, you read me right, despite rumors that 42 is the answer to everything, 508 is the Interstate 10 exit closest to COG 2018 National Rally Central at the YO Ranch Resort in Kerrville TX.
Now this may be humorous to those that still do routes old school by studying the map(s) the night before, making notes to the route sheet that only they can understand, or completely rewriting it onto a little index card about the size of a GPS screen. Those of us that have moved into the modern age have downloaded the routes into our GPS and then not given it another thought. However, the formerly usually know exactly where they are all the time. The rest of us know what the next turn is, and perhaps how far away it is, but after an hour or so of following the instructions we might not really know where in the heck we are. These few notes here are for the latter that are not familiar with the area, and for the amusement of the former.

Interstate 10 and TX Hwy 16 make sort of a crooked X, or cross if you prefer, with the intersection within sight of rally central. Those western movie buffs among you may recall how Gregory Peck’s character (Jim, I think.) reassured Julie that he wouldn’t get lost in the Big Country. “You are either east or west of the river and north or south of the road.” In our case you are either northeast or southwest of I-10 and you are either east or west of TX Hwy 16. Well sorta- kinda on the latter.
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-tZ52bN9/0/17531453/S/i-tZ52bN9-S.jpg) (https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-tZ52bN9/0/17531453/O/i-tZ52bN9.jpg)

Coming in from New Mexico, Texas Interstate 10 starts at mile zero just 4 miles north of El Paso TX and goes approx. 880.5 miles to the Neches River and from there on into Louisiana. Our part of that stretch is centered around exit 508. So if you bail out on a route and just decide to head for I-10 so you can go back to the hotel and put your feet up, be sure to remember that number, 508. If the mile numbers are less than 508 and going lower you need to turn around and head back east. Obviously if the numbers are higher than 508 and going higher still then you need to turn around and head west.

Now TX Hwy 16 is not quite so straight as I-10 is and after it goes south of Medina it actually turns east and eventually starts to parallel I-10 to the southeast into San Antonio. Unfortunately there are no mile markers on TX Hwy 16, so even though it will get you back to Rally Central, you may need to back out the range on your GPS to make sure you’re 1) headed in the right direction on Hwy 16, and 2) make sure it’s the fastest route, as south of Medina Hwy 173 might be the best way to get back. Assuming that most riding (90%?) will be on the Sisters, for the most part that will be west of 16 and southwest of I-10. The other routes are all over the place. It might just be best to make sure the YO resort or the campground is in your favorites and let the GPS get you back direct. Of course if the darn thing is acting up or quit entirely, you could always just sit on the side of the road and wait for an ol’ schooler to go by and then follow them,… if you can keep up that is.  :)

I may not of helped anybody with this, but I’m sure I amused a couple of the Old Schoolers.

I can't wait to hear this year's hit at the rally

No, the link doesn't work.  To view the registrant list, you have to log into the members area, under "Members Links" click on 'My Info" then click on "My Events".

Click on the event name, not "details" and then scroll down until you see the event registrant number.  Click on that number and it will pull up the list of attendees.

To see the list, you have to be a registered attendee.  You also have to have "Pop-Up" boxes enabled.

Has a schedule of events been published for the rally? :beerchug:

It was posted on the rally web pages yesterday, but I screwed up and sent an earlier draft to Keith to post.  I have sent him the correct one this morning, so hopefully he will be able to post it sometime today.  Wait until tomorrow to print.

Greetings, I am logged in and tried to go the 3 Sisters event page and click on the Registrants link to see the list of registrants. It then presented the login page, which has my userid and password pre-populated, I clicked login, but it just took me back to the SE calendar page.

Does the Registrants link work, or is it my tech. difficulty?  Thanks!

WHOO HOO!  I see in the schedule there will be a 1 or 2 up Challenge Ride.   :great:  Can we get some limited information on it?  Cindy and I would like to know the length (total) and (a brief outline) about the process of how it's going to work, if that's available. :)

Length can depend on how many points you want to get, if you run them all the total length is approximately 150 miles, but it can be much more if you plan poorly.  This event will have a time limit, but it is generous.

This will be a bit of a challenge, not turn by turn directions.

All points (locations) will be historical.

Best poker hand wins.

Winners of 2UP $75.00 Gift Card,  winner of 1UP $50.00 gift card.

I don't want to spill all the beans, what fun would that be?   ;D

Challengers will have to actually do a little thinking on this challenge instead of just following written directions.  You will have to plan your route and decide how may points (locations) you will want to try to get.  For every correctly answered question you will be able to draw one additional card for your poker hand.  Here is one of the kickers, you will have to discard a card before you draw a card.

There are 7 points (locations) so you can draw up to a maximum of 7 additional cards, assuming you answer the questions correctly.

The Challenge will be held on Thursday mornings, but you can get the questions starting at 6 pm on Wednesday evening.  That way you can take some time to plan your route.

Destination Cycle near rally central is a good place to get a tire or service if you need it but don't expect it to be cheap.  I would come to the rally not needing anything if you can and Destination just for a true emergency.

She and my dad are going to need me a whole lot, I just can't leave them for even a week.  Y'all she is almost in a wheel chair, she NEEDS this surgery right away. :truce:

The weather forecast  (https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/tx/kerrville?cm_ven=localwx_10day) <----Click says lows about 69F/70F and highs about 96F Sun->Wed.  with humidity in the upper 70s/80s.

Good news on the weather for next weeks rally.  Temps will be moderating (highs in the low 90's) and this is about as good as it gets for South Texas in June.  Would still get out and ride early, but at least it will not be near 100 like the last couple of weeks.

Yea, the mid level ridge will migrate back up toward NTX which will help to lower temps some.
To the east the sea breeze from the Gulf will help to fire up a few showers along the US 77 corridor, well east of the Edwards Plateau.

Added a few destination oriented "Dash" routes to the Google Drive.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1MySK4zUm17IG60Xm2OPkPRtU2CWvObPz (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1MySK4zUm17IG60Xm2OPkPRtU2CWvObPz)

The dash route for the Alamo (river walk too) is sort of convoluted once you get downtown, that was just my suggestion of a route to find parking.
It probably won't be that difficult on weekdays, but I'm not from there, so just in case I added it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The river walk had quite a few trees when I last walked it so there should be enough shade there if you aren't walking around in riding gear. If you plan on doing any other long walks in the heat, I would like to suggest a cheap wally world travel umbrella. IMO it is a remarkable difference between standing in the Texas sun and standing in the shade of an umbrella. I've used one hiking in the desert areas of Big Bend, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico. I know some prefer hats, but I find them stifling. An umbrella will let any breeze available cool your head. It takes a bit of getting used to constantly pointing it at the sun as you walk around but it quickly becomes second nature. They are also handy when stuck on the side of the road making repairs in a shade-less area. Ever have to stop on the highway for....you know irrigating the weeds?....and no car door to hide behind? Takes some coordination (you can practice at home  :)) ), but the umbrella will work for that as well.
Just a thought for you to consider, it's not for everyone.
------------------------------------------------------------
Inside Longhorn Cavern is approx. 68 degrees, with or without an umbrella. :)

Got back from the Motoamerica Superbike doubleheader at Road America on Monday, just in time to get clothes washed and do lots of yard maintenance. I'll be repacking today and leaving Minneapolis for the Rally Friday AM. Meeting fellow COGers in KC for a night of BBQ and beverages. We will be at Rally Central Sunday afternoon.

I'm kind of liking this retirement gig. The pay sucks, but I like having the time to get things done on my schedule. Might even wash the Wisconsin bug splatter off the bike today.

Back to Rally route planning. See everyone soon.

Hey Jerry - If you’re taking US 69, when you pass by the EconoLodge in McAlester, OK, give a beep and a wave.  I have a 1 inch cut on the rear tire of my C14 and I think I’m going to be stuck here until I can get a new rear tire.   >:( :'(

So keep the light on for me, eh?

I'm sorry, but I didn't see this until I was already here in Kerrville. I did see the other post about your troubles, but it looked to me like you were asking local people about a solution to your tire problem, and being from out of town myself, could not offer any positive comment, or knowledge. I do hope you find a tire tho. I remember having been in a similar predicament years ago during the "Ride the Divide", but I was able to find a tire for my C10 in Loveland, CO.

Good luck!

Got back home in DFW yesterday a little after 4 - an easy ride in the country.

Enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting some new ones!

Great job by all the rally staff - your efforts are appreciated.

Also made it back in Saturday evening.

Thanks to Fred, Craig, Pamela, Dan, Doug, Marty, Butch, Eddie, and anyone I missed who contributed so much of their time and hard work to making this rally a success.

Also thanks to everyone attending for letting me fire flashes in your face, crawl over you, and in general be a pest to get pictures for the Concourier and for you. Great photos ED!

Here are a couple of videos. I hope somebody got better ones, I didn't get all of the second song, it might have been better than the first one. I'm not sure why that guy (screen name rhymes with "Got No Mild Jerky") keeps covering the back of his head, doesn't he know that it's his best side?  ;D

Eddie, It was nice meeting you guys as well.  Kind of fun being a choir boy....though it was tough memorizing ALL those lines... :41:. Didn't see your GoPro.  Would have helped look had I known.  I used about an inch of 3M tape and an eBay helmet mount for mine.  I was nervous about losing it so I had a tether mounted on the side.  (GoPro 4 Silver).

Hope someone finds yours and sees these posts.

Judy and I got home yesterday..
{We had to go to the ranch and do a little work before coming home}.

Marty, thanks for posting the songs!
It's a shame "that guy" was blocking your video…  (his screen name rhymes with "Got No Mild Jerky")

All of you that were at the BANQUET,,, Did ya'll notice the great singing from the COG Choir?
    {We practiced the songs for at least 15 minutes this year, and we were sober this time.}
                                                 :sign0103:

Eddie/Gumby/and the rest of the Choir,,,  ya did good.    {Sorry I sang the wrong words}..  :??:

{Patrick, thanks for "err" volunteering to join the choir}.
(That will teach you "not" to be found in the Lobby when we're forming the Choir)

Rev, {I guess} you did ok too.
{Maybe, next year,  ya should write the song several day's before we have to sing it}?
NOTE: The Ri-tas''' helped us overcome the stage fright/terror. Thanx for those...

For those that stayed away because you wuz skert of the heat,,, "Ya messed up"!!
Fred must have a Friend up there,, because the weather co-operated. :great:
We had a nice breeze blowing the entire week, the mornings were cool {below 80*}, stayed in the 80's until noon each day.
I think the hottest afternoon I saw was only 95*..            [Danged cool by Texas standards.]
Even the Northern folk {NOTE: I opted to not say Yankee's} commented that it was more comfortable than they expected..

The Group rides went well.
Gave the New Folks a chance to ride some great roads {Twisted Sisters} and they were able to meet other COGgers {"me" and others  :-\}.

For those that went with me on the Nimitz Museum Ride, hope you enjoyed it.   (I really didn't plan to have a flat tire)

My hat's off to Fred and his crew!

EVERYTHING was well organized!

Ya did good.   :great: :great: :great: :great: :great: :great: :great:

I pulled into the driveway in Manhattan, KS at 3:57 p.m. Saturday, after having overnighted in OKC Friday night and enjoying a lunch visit with my daughter in Wichita earlier Saturday.  Connie never missed a beat.  780 miles each way to Kerrville and back, plus about 650 miles riding locally for a total of about 2200, averaging 43 mpg.  And a permanent smile on my face.  I agree with Ted's comment about people choosing not to attend due to the "heat" as it was hotter at home all week than it was in the hill country.  Not by much, but it just made the afternoon pool dip that much nicer.

As with all four of the rallies I've attended now, I had a blast.  The roads were way better than anything I have locally, the food was great, the WWII museum in Fredericksburg was just an awesome experience, and the hotel staff did a great job IMO.  I could go on but you get the idea.

A huge THANK YOU to the rally staff for putting on a no-stress event for the rest of us.  I'm sure Williamsport will be a similarly great time.

BTW, I hate to display my ignorance here, but can someone enlighten me on two items that were in the swag bags?  First, the green cloth, and second, the clear plastic pouch.  Do they have a specific purpose?  What am I missing?  I can put the light, the pen, and the insulated bag to good use, but I'm at a bit of a loss on the other two items...

Thanks!

Toby

I know 1;  The green cloth is to moisten and wear around your neck.
I suspect;  The plastic pouch could be used to store the pre-wetted green cloth when your not wearing it?

Toby, The Green towel is a cooling towel, wet it, twirl it around and hang around the neck.
The pouch is a waterproof cellphone/MP3 player case.

The plastic pouch, is a waterproof phone pouch.  I know the newer larger phones won't fit in it, but the normal size ones do.  At the rally one of the attendees tested it at Schlitterbahn and she said everything stayed dry.  I would not do a test where you put your phone in it and dunk it under water, but our thinking was it would make a great pouch to use in your tank bag.  I plan to put my MP3 player in it.

The towel is a cooling towel.  Wet it and it is suppose to have a cooling effect.  I did not test it, but many riders use them by soaking them and wrapping them around their neck under their jacket.

I use them all the time.  They work great!  Wet the towel.  Wring it out.  Then wrap it around your neck as Fred mentioned.   :beerchug:

Ah, OK, got it.  The wet cloth idea is a good one, as I can now retire the well-used one I've had for the last few (?) years (and forgot to pack for the National).  And while my phone is a pretty tight fit in the pouch, I can think of several other uses for it, especially with the drawstring.  Good stuff Fred, and thanks again to you and the SC staff for a great time!

Cindy & I got home late yesterday after going by Kansas City to visit with her 94 year old dad for Father's Day.

I've to to hand it to Fred and his crew for putting on a great rally. It was exceptionally well organized, the roads were better than expected, the temperatures weren't really bad until late afternoon, the hotel was great, etc. etc.  :)

One thing was really was welcome was that the rally central was open (seemingly) 24 hrs a day with someone that could assist or just chat. It provided a very useful location to talk to friends (new and old), get information/clarification, buy stuff (COG store or KLIM), etc. Great job! :great:

I know this is late but THANK YOU Fred and rally staff.  The rally was awesome.  It was great getting together with family again.  Jorge and I were 7 miles from home when our motorhome decided to die.  It was towed and Jorge has been working on it.  Thankfully, he found what was wrong and now it's running!

Again, thank you to everyone who made the rally a success.  You guys are the best!

Finally collecting my marbles after getting home last weekend.  A big thank you to the rally team for a GREAT rally for this first timer!

The gathering room / route room was a great idea.  After volunteering to navigate for a group ride and not being needed the first day, I wandered into the room the next day just to see what was going on, having planned a rest day.  I ended up volunteering to navigate for a really great group of people and had an excellent time.  We ended up riding together another day as well.  Saw some old friends and made some new ones.  Felt welcome the entire time.

I made this trip into a 3 week, 6000-mile outing:  1 week there, 1 week in Texas, 1 week back to Pahrump.  Drank some drinks, ate some BBQ, laughed some laughs, smiled a lot, won a couple of prizes.  Smoked some cigars, a set of tires, a set of brake pads, and a set of rotors.  Had the time of my life.   ;D

Thanks again to the South Central crew for putting this on!

Edited to add:  To Bob Rainey and Rev Ryder:  My front fender rattled but made it home.  I've since fixed it with machine screws and nuts.

Was hoping it would hang on.
Assume it just needed tightening at the rivets?

Thanks for that note.  Glad you made it and all the more happy you made it home safely.  We looked for you at the Tech Session, but someone said you had showed early and left.  Sorry about that or we would have gotten her fixed on the spot.  But we had a great session anyways thanks to lots of folks participating and offering advice and tips.  Hope to see you again soon, brother.  :beerchug:

RE:  C-10 tech session

That was Wednesday and I was trying to get rid of my back spasms, so I was hanging in my room that afternoon, probably asleep.

The rivets were loose but rather than trying to tighten them or install new rivets, I decided on small machine screws and nuts instead.

I will be back to TX at some point, possibly Big Bend in 2019.

I attended the 2018 rally in Kerrville. Unfortunately, it was at the end of a two week, 6000 mile ride through OK, CO, NM, and AZ. I live in Arkansas, which has some of the most fun roads in the country. The Three Sisters run was a disappointment. Rough roads with chunks of pavement missing in the worst places, no scenery, scrub brush. I believe you spent too much on the convention sight, and therefore could not afford to feed the riders more than Tex-Mex appetizers. Take a lesson from the Southeast chapter, those guys know how to rally!

As one of the many folks that put the Helen rally together, I have to really say that your SCCOG guys did a great job. Trying to compare the roads in ANY part of this country against each other is a fool's errand as EVERY location is different (often markedly so). On our rides, I found the roads to be in great shape with very light traffic. The banquet showcased the cuisine of the area (e.g. Tex-Mex). Cindy and I thoroughly enjoyed the rally and the area.  :great:

I was really hoping to be the winner, but sadly it wasn't me..
Also unsure of who won it..

I led the C-14 discussion and your lighting setup was demonstrated on a C-14.
Many liked it and were interested in purchasing.

I hope to buy a set myself soon.

Here is a C-14 Review Video that I came across after watching those video's.
Haven't ever seen this one and though it worth watching...

PS: The main reason I posted it is not for the review, it's for the roads on which it was done...
Most of the roads you see are the ones (the Three Sisters) that we rode at this years National in Kerrville Texas.
Ya'll shoulda been there!

Note to self: I have to find that BBQ Joint!! {Seen at about 6 minute's)

But, (since he included the address) I suspect he looked it up.
