Ride the Hidden Jewels in the "BACKYARD RALLY"
« on: March 03, 2016, 08:08:37 pm »
Come find some of the hidden jewels of the roads less traveled in "Our Backyard".

On Tuesday, June 21,  the rally team is sponsoring a special riding opportunity for our members. On the schedule, these events are shown as the 1 Up Challenge, and the 2 Up Challenge. The 1 Up is for solo riders, the 2 Up is for  rider/pillion team. This is something which we have shamelessly stolen from the COG In the Corners Rally team and then modified to suit our rally.  The event will start at 10:00am.

The ride is a combination of route finding and picking up some information about some of the many attractions to the area. Both groups will ride over the same route but the questions will vary somewhat for the two groups. The route is, relatively, short (~100 miles or so) but will require the participants to dismount occasionally to seek out information or simply enjoy the scenery. Participants will be provided with a route sheet with the directions to travel. Additionally they will be expected to answer numerous questions, the answers to which will be found along the route. Correct answers will garner points.

The participants will also be playing Blackjack; One card will be dealt at the start and one card at the finish plus an additional card if desired.  The score from the Blackjack hand PLUS the number of correct answers will determine the final number.  A prize will be awarded for the highest score for each group (rider/pillion and solo).

THIS IS NOT A RACE nor is it a "timed" event so that you will have time to enjoy the ride and the scenery. We would expect all participants to be back at Rally Central not later than 5:00pm.

I have a Harley-Davidson, this sounds like a Poker Run, so according to some I should be expert at doing this.  :rotflmao:

Never done either one ^^^^ - so this might be the best time to learn how to do this.

Sign me up for a 1 up.

Is there a limit on number of riders?

I would hope the questions or info needed to return with would be different for a 1 up vs. a 2 up - as 4 eyes are
usually better then 2 eyes.  :D

There is no planned limit on the number of riders. Solo riders will have different tasks than the 2-up teams. The winner in each category will receive a prize.

How many two-up riders are up for this? I know from my experiences in Cortez that it is a lot of fun.

Just got back from (yet another) route recon.  The total mileage for route (not including the 2 bonus sites) is 107.4 miles. Adding in the mileage for the bonus sites it comes up to under 130 miles. I figure that it is easily do-able in about 5 hours (with a reasonable lunch break) or less (possibly much less).

Seems like you know the area pretty good.

Maybe you should give First Timers a handicap.  Some one that knows the area will be able to run through the course
knowing exactly where to go etc.  While someone that's never been to the area is going to be lost pretty easy in comparison.

Just like I would have to assume that the 1 up and 2 up teams should be separate as 4 eyes have to be better then 2 eyes.  No?

Then again I know NOTHING about searching for Hidden Jewels as I have never done a course/ride like this ever!  One reason I thought I should try.   :great:

Thank You for taking the time to research this.  Must be nice to ride there as I haven't gotten my bike out yet.
Mornings are still below freezing and daytime highs might make the high 30's - not to mention the salt on the road is not totally gone
nor is our chance for snow as I saw it snowing at my place yesterday, but it didn't stick.  Oh well maybe April will be better.

I was a Rally Master for the Ft. Ord Rally and Touring Club back in the dark ages. Everyone knew the area quite well around there. Even 100 miles away, most of us knew well.

I did a rally event for Valentines Day called the Valentines Day Massacre in honor of the Chicago gang killing.  :rotflmao:

Anyway, because only 2 people knew the route, it wasn't a problem. Most folks got lost in their navigation computers (such as they were) and clipboards holding the instructions, and didn't manage to correlate the written instructions (go 4 miles and turn left at the garden tractor) to the mental map they had of the area.

Of course, COG people are sharper than a bunch of Airborne Rangers and such.

Not to worry, Karl. The Solo Riders have easier (and half as many) tasks than the 2-ups. Most of the questions they (solo riders) will have to answer will be at stops along the routing. We have made considerable effort to make the directions clear enough that even TED can follow them.   :rotflmao:  I'm also planning to have someone on the rally team who will not be participating (due to other rally obligations run the course while I follow along to ground check the directions again.

Okay. Here are "The Rules."
2-Up and Solo Challenge

 RULES

THIS IS NOT A RACE!!!  You’ll have plenty of time. Enjoy the scenery and the ride!

This is a combination Blackjack game, route-finding, scavenger hunt.

Upon signing in, DRAW 1 playing card.
Receive your Route Instruction sheet. This sheet has your directions to follow and a number of questions you must answer.
You get 1 point for each correct answer.
Upon returning to Rally Central, DRAW 1 playing card. This card, along with the first card you drew, constitutes your Blackjack hand  ** (See NOTE below).
Combine your Blackjack score with the points you received for correct answers (plus any bonus points) to get your overall score.
**NOTE !
There are 2 BONUS locations on your route sheets. Successfully completing a BONUS gains you 1 additional point PLUS 1 additional card.  Complete one BONUS - get 1 point and one card; complete both BONUSES - get 2 points and two cards. You must make the best Blackjack hand possible using only 2 cards.

If for some reason you choose not to complete the course, please check is with us so that we know you have returned to rally central.

We tried to keep the rules simple enough for Ted to understand. Fortunately, he'll have Judy to explain it all to him. :rotflmao:

Cool.  Looking forward to giving it a try.  :great:

I'm going to assume there would be a winner each one from the 1 UP AND one from the 2UP groups.

Just a thought:
If the 1UP's are going to have half as many - how about making the 1UP's correct answers worth 2 points?
Then the scores would be closer to what the 2UP group might be able to receive.

There will be a winner in each category; one winner in the solo, one team in the 2-up.  As the total number is what determines the winner there is no need to make the two categories totals "match."

Again, we are trying to keep this simple so Ted can understand it.  :rotflmao:
