Artist Point - July 2018
« on: July 29, 2018, 04:06:06 am »
A nice part about being retired, is you can ride to places that would be overcrowded on the weekend.  So I headed out to Artist Point, one of my favourite rides in Washington State.  It's one I treasure, because there's only a small window of opportunity to ride it.  The last two miles, doesn't open till the Department of Transportation can clear the snow.  I went there one year...it just happened to be a lucky accident...because that was the day they opened it.  They were still clearing access to the toilets, that were buried in snow about 18 feet deep.

One thing that surprised me, was the amount of snow still there.  Artist Point opened in the last week of June.  Parts of the trails there, are still covered.

Not only is the scenery beautiful, but the road is a motorcyclist's dream.  The picture you see below, is just an example.  Off to the right, is a 180 degree switchback.  It's tight enough that 10 mph is probably faster than you can take it.

You can see part of the road in the picture below.

Thanks for the pictures. Out country is so great with scenery to match any thing Europe has to offer. These pictures, if not identified, could easily be taken for some place in Europe.

Thanks again.

My last ride with the group was the Longest Day Ride.  That brings back some nice memories.  I still can't believe how beautiful it was to see everyone hitting this one sweeper, one after the other in formation.  It reminded me of something like the Blue Angels do.  Nice.

The other rides, just conflicted with other plans.  I left with an old friend at the beginning of July and headed up north to the Canadian Rockies, passing through the Banff and Jasper areas.  And on Thursday, I'm leaving on another ride.  I'm heading down the coast to San Mateo.  Our youngest daughter is defending her PhD thesis on the 15th at Stanford.  I don't know the official name for what her PhD will be in, but I generally think of it being "biological statistics".  Then on the 17th, her and her sister decided the family needed some kind of celebration trip...so we're going to Iceland for two weeks.  (Guess who's paying...)

Then I'll take a few days to head back north on the bike.  I'm still not sure about the return routing with the California fires.  I was hoping to spend a couple days in Zion.  Then head up to Mt. Lassen and come back up the Sierras into the Cascades for the rest of the way.  But the fires could be a problem.

And far too soon, the summer will be over.  The seminary program I help teach, starts up again on September 10th.  We host a Life Group in our home that will probably start up again on the 11th.  And I have three, three hour, lessons to prepare for a missionary trip to Thailand.  Time is running short.  But it is all good.  :)
