Sport-touring school at JenningsGP with MSTA, February 24-26
« on: October 13, 2016, 08:49:42 pm »
COG is teaming up with Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) to create a Sport-touring educational school for our collective membership. Slated to take place at the legendary Jennings GP track in north Florida, this event is open to all members. This event is brought to you by the leadership of COG, and taught by renowned instructor Ken Condon with years of experience in both road-racing and teaching at “Riding in The Zone.” www.ridinginthezone.com The curriculum for the training course is professionaly instructed and permits mistakes that public roadways do not.

Void of cars, intersections, trees and guardrails, you will be able to implement new concepts from the classroom with the safety of a purpose built track. You will start in the classroom where you will be introduced to theories using modern aids, followed by coached track time where you will practice these concepts under supervision. Rider coaches will help you implement theories from class, such as trail braking, countersteering, hanging off, and apex derived acceleration and deceleration. If you’ve ever Read Keith Code’s “A Twist of The Wrist” then you know what these theories are. But have you ever had the safety of the track to practice them? Well now you do. Sign ups will be limited to 25 COGgers and 25 members of MSTA on a first come first served. Once it fills up, no add-ons will be permitted.

What this is: An advanced rider training course for those looking to learn more than public roadways can safely permit.

What this is not: Racing school. While it does take place at a beginner’s racetrack, this does not qualify you to race, and racing will not take place at this event. Crotch rockets will not be permitted.

What you need: A willingness to learn. This can be a humbling experience for all involved. Trust me, nobody is fast here and speed is not the goal. Skill results in speed, not the other way around.

Bike: Must have no leaks of any kind. Motor, forks, etc. Tires should have 75% life remaining, not squared off, not plugged, not 4 years old. Brakes must be in proper working order. No loose parts of any kind. Remember there will be tech inspection so please be prepared.

Bike prep at the track: All glass, headlight, turn signals, and plastic lenses must be taped over or removed. Passenger pegs should be zip tied or removed. Plate should be removed or taped over. We will help you tape up all lights and glass/plastic. You should know how to disconnect your headlight/taillight or be prepared to generously tape them if you can not. Dangling cords will not be acceptable (I have seen this lol). Tech inspection will take place in the morning. Please do not bring a bike that has leaks or in disrepair, as this will result in the inevitable. Bike rentals are available for $375/day and can be arranged by contacting Jennings GP management directly. We will not be assisting with this and you will be on your own to do this should you desire to.

Gear: Full face helmets are required. Modular/flip up helmets are strictly prohibited. You will need a full one piece leather suit. If you do not have one, it will be available for $60/d. If you do not have boots that cover the ankles, you may rent them for $20/d. And Gauntlet gloves are available for $10/d. The track shop promises to have enough rental gear for us on that day. Helmets are not among the rental gear they supply.

Lodging/Camping: Camping is included in the gate admission price of $10/day. We plan to have a small above ground fire in the evenings.  :campfire: The track gates lock at 10pm and whichever side of the gates you are on at that time is the side you will be on all night. If you don’t camp, and I don’t know any COGgers that don’t, you can stay at Days Inn, Lake Park, GA for the COG rate of $55/night. You are on your own to make this reservation should a hotel be what you need because you arrived at the gate at 10:01pm (ask me how I know).

Event price: $150 covers track time, professional instruction, and lunch. I can go on and on about how cheap this is but I’ll essentially just say this is like getting the instruction for free. And there is such a thing as a free lunch, thank you. You will also pay $10 to Mary at the gate to cover admission/camping. And if you’re quibbling over gear rental prices, just consider your ATGATT expression you are known for and be grateful that Borg and Michelle who run this track are on board with ensuring your safety. Note: The goal is to arrive Thursday evening, not Friday morning. There will be so much to do that you don't want to show up last minute. Friday will be a busy day ;-0

Signups on the Cog events calendar will soon open up for COG members. You must be a COG member to attend this legendary event.  :)

In usual COG fashion we are planning to make a weekend of it.  :beerchug: The instruction with official track day is Friday. Saturday is a legendary Jennings GP backwards trackday. You heard that right...backwards. Mind Blowing I know. It’s like doing a whole new track on Saturday. Lots of decreasing radius turns and fun twists and turns. Regulars at Jennings affectionately call this re-wind. You can sign up for Saturday on your own via the Jennings GP webpage at www.jenningsgp.com Friday signups will be on the COG website. So plan on camping at the track right along pit row for some of the best camping we have ever done. After all, what could be more fun than camping at a racetrack that YOU’RE riding?

Think a fast bike makes you fast? Imagine what learning how to ride the thing would do!  :-\

Seems very interesting, but some questions. I've been to Jennings a few times with my sport bikes, but always used my 2 piece teknic suit that zips up together, are these not going allowed? If it is really cold, can we wear our leathers under our heavy all weather one piece suit?

Thanks

The two-piece suit is okay if it zips together all the way around with no exceptions. And you can wear whatever you want under or over it as long as you are following the rules. Wear a clown costume if you wish :-)

I gotta jump in say a couple of things.  Backwards day is fantastic. My first time there was backwards day and I loved it. Then the next day it reverts to  the regular forward track and it is like a brand new track you never rode before. Two tracks for the price of one!  :)  You guys are going to do a forward-backward-forward. NICE :great:
I promise you that price is a steal for all you get. Do  not miss this steal of a deal.  The experience and knowledge gained is invaluable. The training/skills you acquire there  will be  utilized every time you ride your bike on the street for the rest of your life.    Please do not miss this.  I promise you. If you ride a bike on the street  you really need to do this.
Thanks for listening.Carry on.

This looks like a thing I really really NEED to do. I'm gonna try to make this happen.

As regards the leathers: I have a leather jacket, and leather pants. And if these zip together all the way around, that's acceptable?
I could save $120 and a weekend spent in other people's sweat, if I can wear my leathers all zipped together.

So can I just come down and camp for $10 / day and watch, hang out, laugh?

What kind of campground is it? Electricity? Water? Showers? Etc.

Yes you most definitely can. We have electricity in the pits. Bathroom/showers are indoors at the main building(1 min walk). You can come and enjoy the excitement and nightly fires but I gotta warn you...1hour in and you're gonna wish you signed up for the school!

They won't let my trike on the track.

Electricity, by that I mean that I can hook up to and stay hooked up to into my trailer.

Why won't they accept a riding suit like an Aerostitch Roadcrafter?

The add says leather Jim, but I know that most tracks DO accept the Roadcrafter, how about calling them to find out?

I need to check my schedule but I definitely want to attend this event. JenningsGP is always a blast.

My wife and I were there on October 1st for a girls only day and October 2nd for a regular track day for me.
Our last track day prior to that was in 2009.
We had a blast on my wife's FZ-09 and decided to go back in November for another one with Southern Track Days.

Taking Connie there would be fun for sure.  :great:

Doug,
I was on the track on Sunday as well. It was a lot of fun going back there after so many years. The FZ definitely needs better suspension and tires but is a lot more fun to ride at Jennings than my old 05 gixxer1000.
My wife was riding around on Sunday with our 5 year-old on her Honda CRF50F. That was my duty the day before when mommy was on the track. :great:

Planning a Florida trip around that time frame. May camp out one night but... Unless I trailer the bike I would be a bystander, ugh. Trip is only 9 days and plans on visiting a few friends so this maybe a good stop on the way back home if the date aligns with travel plans.

Just wanted to chime in here. Looking forward to this very much.

I'll be working with Doug to bring whatever is needed to set up rally central and base camp. Those who can bring a little firewood let us know. Those who plan to ride in on motorcycles let us know and we can bring extra coolers and tables and etc for you (hardcore riders)((COG's finest)).

We should plan on taping up our bikes and getting ready for tech inspection together on Thurs evening at the track. Breakfast can be purchased on the grounds, lunch is provided and dinner will be a few miles away (optional recommended dinner spot) and 'the thing' will be to be back before the gates close at 9:59 and 59 seconds p.m.

Thanks to Ken and Doug for putting this together. I'll pitch in and we should have a great weekend.

If I usually party with you until 3:30am when we are camping - you'll forgive me if I play it a little differently this time. I'm not going to be buzzed, hungover or dehydrated until I'm done with the track for the weekend. So, Saturday night should be awesome  :beerchug:
